Then, in the eighteenth year of the reign of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, Abijam reigned over Judah.1 Igitur in octavo decimo anno regni Ieroboam filii Nabat regnavit Abiam super Iudam.
He reigned for three years in Jerusalem. The name of his mother was Maacah, the daughter of Abishalom.2 Tribus annis regnavit in Ierusalem; nomen matris eius Maacha filia Abessalom.
And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him. Neither was his heart perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of David, his father.3 Ambulavitque in omnibus peccatis patris sui, quae fecerat ante eum; nec erat cor eius perfectum cum Domino Deo suo sicut cor David patris eius.
But for the sake of David, the Lord his God gave to him a lamp in Jerusalem, so that he might raise up his son after him, and so that he might establish Jerusalem.4 Sed propter David dedit ei Dominus Deus suus lucernam in Ierusalem, ut suscitaret filium eius post eum et statueret Ierusalem;
For David had done what was right in the eyes of the Lord, and he had not declined from all of the things that he had instructed to him, during all the days of his life, except the matter of Uriah, the Hittite.5 eo quod fecisset David rectum in oculis Domini et non declinasset ab omnibus, quae praeceperat ei, cunctis diebus vitae suae, excepta re Uriae Hetthaei.
Now there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam during the entire time of his life.6
And the rest of the words of Abijam, and all that he did, were these not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Judah? And there was fighting between Abijam and Jeroboam.7 Reliqua autem gestorum Abiam et omnia, quae fecit, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro annalium regum Iudae? Fuitque bellum inter Abiam et inter Ieroboam.
And Abijam slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David. And Asa, his son, reigned in his place.8 Et dormivit Abiam cum patribus suis, et sepelierunt eum in civitate David; regnavitque Asa filius eius pro eo.
Then, in the twentieth year of Jeroboam, the king of Israel, Asa reigned as king of Judah.9 In anno ergo vicesimo Ieroboam regis Israel regnavit Asa rex Iudae
And he reigned for forty-one years in Jerusalem. The name of his mother was Maacah, the daughter of Abishalom.10 et quadraginta et uno anno regnavit in Ierusalem. Nomen matris eius Maacha filia Abessalom.
And Asa did what was right before the sight of the Lord, just as his father David did.11 Et fecit Asa rectum ante conspectum Domini sicut David pater eius.
And he took away the effeminate from the land. And he purged all the filth of the idols, which his fathers had made.12 Et abstulit prostibula de terra purgavitque universas sordes idolorum, quae fecerant patres eius.
Moreover, he also removed his mother, Maacah, from being the leader in the sacrifices of Priapus, and in his sacred grove which she had consecrated. And he destroyed his grotto. And he shattered the very indecent idol, and he burned it at the torrent Kidron.13 Insuper et Maacham matrem suam amovit, ne esset domina, eo quod fecisset abominationem Aserae; confregitque Asa simulacrum turpissimum et combussit in torrente Cedron.
But the high places, he did not take away. Yet truly, the heart of Asa was perfect with the Lord during all his days.14 Excelsa autem non abstulit; verumtamen cor Asa perfectum erat coram Domino cunctis diebus suis.
And he brought the things that his father had sanctified and vowed back to the house of the Lord: the silver, and the gold, and the vessels.15 Et intulit ea, quae sanctificaverat pater suus et quae ipse voverat, in domum Domini, argentum et aurum et vasa.
Now there was war between Asa and Baasha, the king of Israel, during all their days.16 Bellum autem erat inter Asa et Baasa regem lsrael cunctis diebus eorum.
And Baasha, the king of Israel, ascended against Judah. And he built up Ramah, so that no one would be able to exit or enter from the side of Asa, the king of Judah.17 Ascendit quoque Baasa rex Israel in Iudam et aedificavit Rama, ut non posset quispiam egredi vel ingredi de parte Asa regis Iudae.
And so, Asa took all the silver and the gold which had remained in the treasuries of the house of the Lord, and in the treasuries of the house of the king, and he gave it into the hands of his servants. And he sent them to Benhadad, the son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion, the king of Syria, who was living in Damascus, saying:18 Tollens itaque Asa omne argentum et aurum, quod remanserat in thesauris domus Domini et in thesauris domus regiae, dedit illud in manu servorum suorum et misit ad Benadad filium Tabremmon filii Hezion regem Syriae, qui habitabat in Damasco, dicens:
“There is a pact between me and you, and between my father and your father. For this reason, I have sent to you gifts of silver and of gold. And I ask you to go and break your pact with Baasha, the king of Israel, so that he may withdraw from me.”19 “ Foedus est inter me et te et inter patrem meum et patrem tuum; ideo misi tibi munera, argentum et aurum, et peto, ut irritum facias foedus, quod habes cum Baasa rege Israel, et recedat a me ”.
Benhadad, acquiescing to king Asa, sent the leaders of his army against the cities of Israel. And they struck Ijon, and Dan, and Abel, the house of Maacah, and all of Chinneroth, that is, all the land of Naphtali.20 Acquiescens Benadad regi Asa misit principes exercituum suorum in civitates Israel, et percusserunt Ahion et Dan et Abelbethmaacha et universam Chenereth cum omni terra Nephthali.
And when Baasha had heard this, he ceased from fortifying Ramah, and he returned to Tirzah.21 Quod cum audisset Baasa, cessavit aedificare Rama et reversus est in Thersa.
Then king Asa sent an announcement to all of Judah, saying, “Let no one be excused.” And they took away the stones from Ramah, and its timber, with which Baasha had fortified it. And from these things, king Asa built up Geba of Benjamin and Mizpah.22 Rex autem Asa convocavit omnem Iudam, nullo excusato; et tulerunt lapides Rama et ligna eius, quibus aedificaverat Baasa, et exstruxit de eis rex Asa Gabaa Beniamin et Maspha.
Now all the rest of the words of Asa, and his entire strength, and all that he did, and the cities that he built, were these not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Judah? Yet truly, in the time of his old age, he was afflicted in his feet.23 Reliqua autem omnium gestorum Asa et universa fortitudo eius et cuncta, quae fecit, et civitates, quas exstruxit, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro annalium regum Iudae? Verumtamen in tempore senectutis suae doluit pedes;
And he slept with his fathers, and he was buried with them in the city of David, his father. And Jehoshaphat, his son, reigned in his place.24 et dormivit cum patribus suis et sepultus est cum eis in civitate David patris sui. Regnavitque Iosaphat filius eius pro eo.
Yet truly, Nadab, the son of Jeroboam, reigned over Israel, in the second year of Asa, the king of Judah. And he reigned over Israel for two years.25 Nadab vero filius Ieroboam regnavit super Israel anno secundo Asa regis Iudae; regnavitque super Israel duobus annis.
And he did what is evil in the sight of the Lord. And he walked in the ways of his father and in his sins, by which he caused Israel to sin.26 Et fecit, quod malum est in conspectu Domini, et ambulavit in viis patris sui et in peccato eius, quo peccare fecit Israel.
Then Baasha, the son of Ahijah, from the house of Issachar, set an ambush against him, and he struck him down at Gibbethon, which is a city of the Philistines. For indeed, Nadab and all of Israel were laying siege to Gibbethon.27 Insidiatus est autem ei Baasa filius Ahiae de domo Issachar et percussit eum in Gebbethon, quae est urbs Philisthinorum; siquidem Nadab et omnis Israel obsidebant Gebbethon.
And so Baasha killed him in the third year of Asa, the king of Judah, and he reigned in his place.28 Interfecit igitur illum Baasa in anno tertio Asa regis Iudae et regnavit pro eo.
And when he had reigned, he struck down the entire house of Jeroboam. He did not leave behind even one soul from his offspring, until he had wiped him away, in accord with the word of the Lord, which he had spoken by the hand of Ahijah, the Shilonite,29 Cumque regnasset, percussit omnem domum Ieroboam; non dimisit ne unam quidem animam de semine eius, donec deleret eam iuxta verbum Domini, quod locutus fuerat in manu servi sui Ahiae Silonitis
because of the sin of Jeroboam, which he had committed, and by which he had caused Israel to sin, and because of the offense by which he had provoked the Lord, the God of Israel.30 propter peccata Ieroboam, quae peccaverat et quibus peccare fecerat Israel, et propter delictum, quo irritaverat Dominum, Deum Israel.
But the rest of the words of Nadab, and all that he did, were these not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel?31 Reliqua autem gestorum Nadab et omnia, quae fortiter operatus est, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro annalium regum Israel?
And there was war between Asa and Baasha, the king of Israel, during all their days.32 Fuitque bellum inter Asa et Baasa regem Israel cunctis diebus eorum.
In the third year of Asa, the king of Judah, Baasha, the son of Ahijah, reigned over all of Israel, at Tirzah, for twenty-four years.33 Anno tertio Asa regis Iudae regnavit Baasa filius Ahiae super omnem Israel in Thersa viginti quattuor annis;
And he did evil in the sight of the Lord. And he walked in the ways of Jeroboam, and in his sins, by which he caused Israel to sin.34 et fecit malum coram Domino ambulavitque in via Ieroboam et in peccato eius, quo peccare fecit Israel.
