1 Then Joseph instructed the steward of his house, saying: “Fill their sacks with grain, as much as they are able to hold. And place each one’s money at the top of the sack.	1 E GIUSEPPE comandò, e disse al suo mastro di casa: Empi le sacca di questi uomini di vittuaglia, quanto essi ne potranno portare; e rimetti i danari di ciascuno di essi alla bocca del suo sacco.
2 But place my silver bowl, and the price that he gave for the wheat, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest.” And so it was done.	2 Metti eziandio la mia coppa, quella coppa di argento, alla bocca del sacco del minore, insieme co’ danari del suo grano. Ed egli fece come Giuseppe gli avea detto.
3 And when morning arose, they were sent away with their donkeys.	3 In su lo schiarir della mattina, quegli uomini furono accommiatati co’ loro asini.
4 And now they had departed from the city and had set out a short distance. Then Joseph, sending for the steward of his house, said: “Rise up and pursue the men. And when you have overtaken them, say: ‘Why have you returned evil for good?	4 Essendo usciti fuor della città, e non essendo ancora lungi, Giuseppe disse al suo mastro di casa: Levati, persegui quegli uomini; e, quando tu li avrai aggiunti, di’ loro: Perchè avete voi renduto mal per bene?
5 The cup that you have stolen, it is that from which my lord drinks, and in which he is accustomed to discern signs. You have done a very sinful thing.’ ”	5 Non è quella la coppa, nella quale il mio signore suol bere, per la quale egli suole indovinare? voi avete malvagiamente operato in ciò che avete fatto.
6 He did as he had been ordered. And having overtaken them, he spoke to them according to the order.	6 Egli adunque li raggiunse, e disse loro quelle parole.
7 And they responded: “Why does our lord speak in this way, as though your servants had committed such a shameful act?	7 Ed essi gli dissero: Perchè dice il mio signore cotali parole? tolga Iddio che i tuoi servitori facciano una cotal cosa.
8 The money, which we found at the top of our sacks, we carried back to you from the land of Canaan. So in what way does it follow that we would steal, from the house of your lord, gold or silver?	8 Ecco, noi ti riportammo dal paese di Canaan i danari che avevamo trovati alle bocche delle nostre sacca; come dunque avremmo noi rubato della casa del tuo signore oro od argento?
9 Whichever of your servants will be found to have what you seek, may he die, and we shall be the servants of my lord.”	9 Muoia colui de’ tuoi servitori, appo il quale quella coppa sarà trovata; e oltre a ciò noi saremo servi al mio signore.
10 And he said to them: “Let it be according to your verdict. With whomever it will be found, let him be my servant, but you will be unharmed.”	10 Ed egli disse: Quantunque ora fosse ragionevole di far secondo le vostre parole, pur nondimeno colui solo appo il quale ella sarà trovata, mi sarà servo, e voi altri sarete sciolti.
11 And so, they quickly placed their sacks down to the ground, and each one was opened.	11 E ciascun d’essi mise giù il suo sacco in terra, e l’aperse.
12 And when he had searched, beginning with the oldest, all the way to the youngest, he found the cup in Benjamin’s sack.	12 E il maestro di casa li frugò tutti, cominciando dal sacco del maggiore, e finendo a quel del minore; e la coppa fu ritrovata nel sacco di Beniamino.
13 But they, tearing their garments and burdening their donkeys again, returned to the town.	13 Allora essi stracciarono i lor vestimenti; e, caricato ciascuno il suo asino, tornarono nella città.
14 And Judah, first among his brothers, entered to Joseph (for he had not yet departed from the place) and together they all fell down before him to the ground.	14 E Giuda, co’ suoi fratelli, entrò nella casa di Giuseppe, il quale era ancora quivi; ed essi si gittarono in terra davanti a lui.
15 And he said to them: “Why would you choose to act in this way? Could you be ignorant that there is no one like me in the knowledge of discerning signs?”	15 E Giuseppe disse loro: Quale è questo atto che voi avete fatto? non sapete voi che un par mio per certo indovina?
16 And Judah said to him, “What could we answer to my lord? And what would we be able to say, or to justly claim? God has discovered the iniquity of your servants. See, we have all become servants to my lord, both we, and he with whom the cup was found.”	16 E Giuda disse: Che diremo al mio signore? quali parole useremo? e come ci giustificheremo noi? Iddio ha ritrovata l’iniquità de’ tuoi servitori; ecco, noi siamo servi al mio signore, così noi altri, come colui appo il quale è stata ritrovata la coppa.
17 Joseph responded: “Far be it from me that I should act in this way. He who stole the cup, he will be my servant. But you may go away free to your father.”	17 Ma Giuseppe disse: Tolga Iddio che io faccia questo; colui, appo il quale è stata trovata la coppa, mi sia servo, e voi altri ritornatevene in pace a vostro padre
18 Then Judah, approaching closer, said confidently: “I beg you, my lord, let your servant speak a word in your ears, and do not be angry with your servant. For you are next to Pharaoh.	18 E Giuda gli si accostò, e disse: Ahi! signor mio: deh! lascia che il tuo servitore dica una parola al mio signore, e non accendasi la tua ira contro al tuo servitore; conciossiachè tu sii appunto come Faraone.
19 My lord, you questioned your servants before: ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’	19 Il mio signore domandò i suoi servitori, dicendo: Avete voi padre o fratello?
20 And we answered you, my lord: ‘There is our father, an old man, and a young boy, who was born in his old age. His brother of the same womb has died, and he alone is left to his mother and father, who truly love him tenderly.’	20 Enoi: dicemmo al mio signore: Noi abbiamo un padre vecchio, e un giovane piccol fratello, nato a nostro padre nella sua vecchiezza, e il suo fratello è morto; talchè egli è rimasto solo di sua madre, e suo padre l’ama.
21 And you said to your servants, ‘Bring him to me, and I will set my eyes on him.’	21 Allora tu dicesti a’ tuoi servitori: Menatemelo, ed io porrò l’occhio mio sopra lui.
22 We suggested to my lord: ‘The boy is not able to leave his father. For if he sends him away, he will die.’	22 E noi dicemmo al mio signore: Il fanciullo non può lasciar suo padre; perciocchè s’egli lo lasciasse, suo padre morrebbe.
23 And you said to your servants: ‘Unless your youngest brother arrives with you, you will not see my face any more.’	23 E tu dicesti a’ tuoi servitori: Se il vostro fratel minore non iscende con voi, voi non vedrete più la mia faccia.
24 Therefore, when we had gone up to your servant our father, we explained to him all that my lord had spoken.	24 Come dunque fummo ritornati a mio padre, tuo servitore, gli rapportammo le parole del mio signore.
25 And our father said: ‘Return and buy us a little wheat.’	25 Dipoi nostro padre disse: Tornate a comperarci un poco di vittuaglia.
26 And we said to him: ‘We cannot go. If our youngest brother descends with us, we will set out together. Otherwise, in his absence, we do not dare to see the face of the man.’	26 E noi dicemmo: Noi non possiamo scender là; ma, se il nostro fratello minore è con noi, noi vi scenderemo; perciocchè noi non possiam veder la faccia di quell’uomo, se il nostro fratel minore non è con noi.
27 To which he responded: ‘You know that my wife conceived twice by me.	27 E mio padre, tuo servitore, ci disse: Voi sapete che mia moglie mi partorì due figliuoli.
28 One went out, and you said, “A beast devoured him.” And since then, he has not appeared.	28 L’uno de’ quali, essendosi dipartito d’appresso a me, io ho detto: Certo egli del tutto è stato lacerato; ed io non l’ho veduto fino ad ora.
29 If you take this one also, and anything happens to him on the way, you will lead my grey hairs down with grief to the grave.’	29 E se voi togliete ancora questo d’appresso a me, e gli avviene alcuna mortal sciagura, voi farete scender la mia canutezza con afflizione nel sepolcro.
30 Therefore, if I would have gone to your servant, our father, with the boy not present, (though his life depends upon the life of him)	30 Ora dunque se, quando io giungerò a mio padre, tuo servitore, il fanciullo, alla cui anima la sua è legata, non è con noi;
31 and if he were to see that he is not with us, he would die, and your servants will lead his grey hairs down with sorrow to the grave.	31 egli avverrà che, come vedrà che il fanciullo non vi sarà, egli si morrà; e così i tuoi servitori avranno fatto scender la canutezza di nostro padre, tuo servitore, con cordoglio, nel sepolcro.
32 Let me be your very own servant, for I accepted this one into my trust, and I promised, saying: ‘Unless I lead him back, I will be guilty of a sin against my father for all time.’	32 Ora, perciocchè il tuo servitore ha assicurato di questo fanciullo a mio padre, menandonelo d’appresso a lui, dicendo: Se io non te lo riconduco, io sarò colpevole inverso mio padre in perpetuo;
33 And so I, your servant, will remain in place of the boy, in ministry to my lord, and then let the boy go up with his brothers.	33 deh! lascia ora che il tuo servitore rimanga servo al mio signore, in luogo del fanciullo, e che il fanciullo se ne ritorni co’ suoi fratelli.
34 For I cannot return to my father without the boy, lest I appear as a witness to the calamity that will oppress my father.”	34 Perciocchè, come ritornerei io a mio padre, non essendo il fanciullo meco? Io non potrei farlo, che talora io non vedessi l’afflizione che ne avverrebbe a mio padre
