Genesis 15

1 And so, these things having been transacted, the word of the Lord came to Abram by a vision, saying: “Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your protector, and your reward is exceedingly great.”	1 In seguito a questi fatti, la parola del Signore fu rivolta ad Abram in visione, in questi termini: "Non temere, Abram! Io sono il tuo scudo; la tua ricompensa sarà grande assai".
2 And Abram said: “Lord God, what will you give to me? I may go without children. And the son of the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus.”	2 Rispose Abram: "Mio Signore Dio, che cosa mi donerai, mentre io me ne vado spogliato e l'erede della mia casa è Eliezer di Damasco?".
3 And Abram added: “Yet to me you have not given offspring. And behold, my servant born in my house will be my heir.”	3 Soggiunse Abram: "Vedi che a me non hai dato discendenza e che un mio domestico sarà mio erede?".
4 And immediately the word of the Lord came to him, saying: “This one will not be your heir. But he who will come from your loins, the same will you have for your heir.”	4 Ed ecco gli fu rivolto un oracolo del Signore in questi termini: "Non costui sarà il tuo erede, ma colui che uscirà dalle tue viscere, lui sarà il tuo erede".
5 And he brought him outside, and he said to him, “Take in the heavens, and number the stars, if you can.” And he said to him, “So also will your offspring be.”	5 Poi lo fece uscir fuori e gli disse: "Guarda in cielo e conta le stelle, se le puoi contare"; e soggiunse: "Tale sarà la tua discendenza".
6 Abram believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice.	6 Egli credette al Signore che glielo accreditò a giustizia.
7 And he said to him, “I am the Lord who led you away from Ur of the Chaldeans, so as to give you this land, and so that you would possess it.”	7 E gli disse: "Io sono il Signore che ti ho fatto uscire da Ur dei Caldei, per darti questo paese in possesso".
8 But he said, “Lord God, in what way may I be able to know that I will possess it?”	8 Rispose: "Signore mio Dio, come potrò conoscere che ne avrò il possesso?".
9 And the Lord responded by saying: “Take for me a cow of three years, and a she-goat of three years, and a ram of three years, also a turtle-dove and a pigeon.”	9 Gli disse: "Prendi una giovenca di tre anni, una capra di tre anni, un ariete di tre anni, una tortora e un pulcino di uccello".
10 Taking all these, he divided them through the middle, and placed both parts opposite one another. But the birds he did not divide.	10 Andò a prendere tutti questi animali, spaccandoli in pezzi, e ne pose un pezzo dinanzi all'altro; non divise però gli uccelli.
11 And birds descended upon the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.	11 Subito l'uccello rapace calò sui pezzi, ma Abram lo scacciò.
12 And when the sun was setting, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a dread, great and dark, invaded him.	12 Quando il sole stava per tramontare, un sonno profondo cadde su Abram ed ecco che un terrore e una grande tenebra l'assalì.
13 And it was said to him: “Know beforehand that your future offspring will be sojourners in a land not their own, and they will subjugate them in servitude and afflict them for four hundred years.	13 Allora il Signore disse ad Abram: "Devi sapere che la tua discendenza dimorerà come forestiera in una terra non sua; là lavoreranno e li opprimeranno per quattrocento anni.
14 Yet truly, I will judge the nation that they will serve, and after this they will depart with great substance.	14 Ma io giudicherò la nazione ch'essi avranno servito! Dopo di che essi usciranno con grandi beni.
15 But you will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age.	15 Quanto a te, te ne andrai in pace presso i tuoi padri; sarai sepolto dopo una felice vecchiaia.
16 But in the fourth generation, they will return here. For the iniquities of the Amorites are not yet completed, even to this present time.”	16 Alla quarta generazione torneranno qui, perché non è ancora arrivata al colmo l'iniquità degli Amorrei".
17 Then, when the sun had set, there came a dark mist, and there appeared a smoking furnace and a lamp of fire passing between those divisions.	17 Quando il sole fu tramontato ci fu un buio fitto, poi ecco un forno fumante e una fiaccola infuocata passare in mezzo a quelle parti divise.
18 On that day, God formed a covenant with Abram, saying: “To your offspring I will give this land, from the river of Egypt, even to the great river Euphrates:	18 In quel giorno il Signore tagliò il patto con Abram in questi termini: "Alla tua razza io do questo paese, dal torrente d'Egitto fino al fiume grande, il fiume Eufrate:
19 the land of the Kenites and the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites	19 i Keniti, i Kenizziti, i Kadmoniti,
20 and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, likewise the Rephaim,	20 gli Hittiti, i Perizziti, i Refaim,
21 and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”	21 gli Amorrei, i Cananei, i Gergesei e i Gebusei".
