NOVA VULGATANEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Iosue senex provectaeque aetatis erat, et dixit Dominus ad eum: “ Senuisti et longaevus es; terraque latissima adhuc superest, quae necdum occupata est.1 When Joshua was old and advanced in years, the LORD said to him: "Though now you are old and advanced in years, a very large part of the land still remains to be conquered.
Omnis videlicet Galilaea, regio Philisthim et universa Gesuri,2 This additional land includes all Geshur and all the districts of the Philistines
a fluvio Sihor, qui est ad orientem Aegypti, usque ad terminos Accaron contra aquilonem, terra Chananaea, quae in quinque principes Philisthim dividitur, Gazaeos et Azotios, Ascalonitas, Getthaeos et Accaronitas ac Hevaei3 (from the stream adjoining Egypt to the boundary of Ekron in the north is reckoned Canaanite territory, though held by the five lords of the Philistines in Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath and Ekron); also where the Avvim are in the south;
meridie; et omnis terra Chanaan de Ara Sidoniorum usque Apheca et terminos Amorraei;4 all the land of the Canaanites from Mearah of the Sidonians to Aphek, and the boundaries of the Amorites;
et terra Gibliorum et omnis Libanus in oriente a Baalgad sub monte Hermon usque ad introitum Emath,5 and the Gebalite territory; and all the Lebanon on the east, from Baal-gad at the foot of Mount Hermon to Labo in the land of Hamath.
omnes, qui habitant in monte a Libano usque ad Maserephoth in occidente, universi Sidonii. Ego sum qui delebo eos a facie filiorum Israel. Sorte tantum distribue terram Israel in hereditatem, sicut praecepi tibi.6 At the advance of the Israelites I will drive out all the Sidonian inhabitants of the mountain regions between Lebanon and Misrephoth-maim; at least include these areas in the division of the Israelite heritage, just as I have commanded you.
Et nunc divide terram hanc in possessionem novem tribubus et dimidiae tribui Manasse ”.
Now, therefore, apportion among the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh the land which is to be their heritage."
Cum qua Ruben et Gad possederunt terram, quam tradidit eis Moyses famulus Domini trans fluenta Iordanis ad orientalem plagam:8 Now the other half of the tribe of Manasseh as well as the Reubenites and Gadites, had received their heritage which Moses, the servant of the LORD, had given them east of the Jordan:
ab Aroer, quae sita est in ripa torrentis Arnon, et civitate in vallis medio, universaque campestria Medaba usque Dibon;9 from Aroer on the bank of the Wadi Arnon and the city in the wadi itself, through the tableland of Medeba and Dibon,
et cunctas civitates Sehon regis Amorraei, qui regnavit in Hesebon, usque ad terminos filiorum Ammon;10 with the rest of the cities of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, to the boundary of the Ammonites;
et Galaad ac terminos Gesuri et Maachathi omnemque montem Hermon et universam Basan usque Salcha,11 also Gilead and the territory of the Geshurites and Maacathites, all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salecah,
omne regnum Og in Basan, qui regnavit in Astharoth et Edrai — ipse fuit de reliquiis Raphaim C; percussitque eos Moyses atque delevit.12 the entire kingdom in Bashan of Og, a survivor of the Rephaim, who reigned at Ashtaroth and Edrei. Though Moses conquered and occupied these territories,
Non autem disperdiderunt filii Israel Gesuri et Maachathi, et habitaverunt in medio Israel usque in praesentem diem.
the Israelites did not dislodge the Geshurites and Maacathites, so that Geshur and Maacath survive in the midst of Israel to this day.
Tribui tantum Levi non dedit possessionem, sed sacrificia Domini, Dei Israel: ipsa est eius hereditas, sicut locutus est illi.
However, to the tribe of Levi Moses assigned no heritage since, as the LORD had promised them, the LORD, the God of Israel, is their heritage.
Dedit ergo Moyses possessionem tribui filiorum Ruben iuxta cognationes suas.15 What Moses gave to the Reubenite clans:
Fuitque terminus eorum ab Aroer, quae sita est in ripa torrentis Arnon, et a civitate in valle eiusdem torrentis media, et universa planities usque Medaba,16 Their territory reached from Aroer, on the bank of the Wadi Arnon, and the city in the wadi itself, through the tableland about Medeba,
Hesebon cunctaque oppida eius, quae sunt in campestribus: Dibon et Bamothbaal et Bethbaalmeon17 to include Heshbon and all its towns which are on the tableland, Dibon, Bamoth-baal, Beth-baal-meon,
et Iasa et Cademoth et Mephaath,18 Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,
Cariathaim et Sabama et Serethsahar in monte convallis,19 Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth-shahar on the knoll within the valley,
Bethphegor et declivia Phasga et Bethiesimoth20 Beth-peor, the slopes of Pisgah, Beth-jeshimoth,
et omnes urbes campestres universumque regnum Sehon regis Amorraei, qui regnavit in Hesebon, quem percussit Moyses, ipsum et principes Madian, Evi et Recem et Sur et Hur et Rebe, duces Sehon habitatores terrae.21 and the other cities of the tableland and, generally, of the kingdom of Sihon. This Amorite king, who reigned in Heshbon, Moses had killed, with his vassals, the princes of Midian, who were settled in the land: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba;
Et Balaam filium Beor hariolum occiderunt filii Israel gladio cum ceteris interfectis.22 and among their slain followers the Israelites put to the sword also the soothsayer Balaam, son of Beor.
Factusque est terminus filiorum Ruben Iordanis fluvius. Haec est possessio Rubenitarum per cognationes suas, urbes et viculi earum.
The boundary of the Reubenites was the bank of the Jordan. These cities and their villages were the heritage of the clans of the Reubenites.
Deditque Moyses tribui Gad, filiis Gad, per cognationes suas possessionem, cuius hic est24 What Moses gave to the Gadite clans:
terminus: Iazer et omnes civitates Galaad dimidiaque pars terrae filiorum Ammon usque ad Aroer, quae est contra Rabba;25 Their territory included Jazer, all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites as far as Aroer, toward Rabbah (that is,
et ab Hesebon usque Ramothmaspha et Betonim et a Mahanaim usque ad terminos Lodabar,26 from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the boundary of Lodebar);
in valle quoque Betharan et Bethnemra et Succoth et Saphon, reliqua pars regni Sehon regis Hesebon; Iordanis et terminus usque ad extremam partem maris Chenereth trans Iordanem ad orientalem plagam.27 and in the Jordan valley: Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, Zaphon, the other part of the kingdom of Sihon, king of Heshbon, with the bank of the Jordan to the southeastern tip of the Sea of Chinnereth.
Haec est possessio filiorum Gad per familias suas, civitates et villae earum.
These cities and their villages were the heritage of the clans of the Gadites.
Dedit Moyses et dimidiae tribui filiorum Manasse, iuxta cognationes suas possessionem:29 What Moses gave to the clans of the half-tribe of Manasseh:
Manasse, a Mahanaim universam Basan, cunctum regnum Og regis Basan omnesque vicos Iair, qui sunt in Basan, sexaginta oppida;30 Their territory included Mahanaim, all of Bashan, the entire kingdom of Og, king of Bashan, and all the villages of Jair, which are sixty cities in Bashan.
et dimidiam partem Galaad et Astharoth et Edrai, urbes regni Og in Basan, filiis Machir filii Manasse, dimidiae parti filiorum Machir, iuxta cognationes suas.
Half of Gilead, with Ashtaroth and Edrei, once the royal cities of Og in Bashan, fell to the descendants of Machir, son of Manasseh, for half the clans descended from Machir.
Hanc possessionem divisit Moyses in campestribus Moab trans Iordanem contra Iericho ad orientalem plagam.32 These are the portions which Moses gave when he was in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan east of Jericho.
Tribui autem Levi non dedit possessionem, quoniam Dominus, Deus Israel, ipse est possessio eius, ut locutus est illi.
However, Moses gave no heritage to the tribe of Levi, since the LORD himself, the God of Israel, is their heritage, as he promised.
