1 Samuel 15

1 Samuel said to Saul, 'I am the man whom Yahweh sent to anoint you as king of his people Israel, sonow listen to the words of Yahweh.	1 E Samuel disse a Saul: Iddio mi mandò, ch' io ugnessi te re sopra il popolo suo Israel. Ora intendi la voce di Dio.
2 This is what Yahweh Sabaoth says, "I intend to punish what Amalek did to Israel -- laying a trap forhim on the way as he was coming up from Egypt.	2 Questo dice il Signore degli eserciti; io hoe numerate tutte le cose che fece Amalec ad Israel, come gli fu contrario nella via, quando ascendea d'Egitto.
3 Now, go and crush Amalek; put him under the curse of destruction with al that he possesses. Do notspare him, but kil man and woman, babe and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and donkey." '	3 Ora vae, e percuoti Amalec, e guasta tutte le sue cose; e non desiderare alcuna di quelle cose; non gli perdonare, ma uccidi dall' uomo insino alla femina, e piccolo e lattante, bue e pecora, e camello e asino.
4 Saul summoned the people and reviewed them at Telaim: two hundred thousand foot soldiers (andten thousand men of Judah).	4 E Saul comandò al popolo, e numerogli come gli agnelli; CC milia di pedoni, e X milia uomini di Giuda.
5 Saul advanced on the town of Amalek and lay in ambush in the river bed.	5 Ed essendo venuto Saul insino alla città di Amalec, nascose agguato nel fiume.
6 Saul said to the Kenites, 'Go away, leave your homes among the Amalekites, in case I destroy youwith them -- you acted with faithful love towards al the Israelites when they were coming up from Egypt.' So theKenites moved away from the Amalekites.	6 E Saul disse a Cineo: andate, e partitevi di Amalec, acciò ch' io non t'inviluppi con esso lui; però che tu facesti misericordia con tutti i figliuoli d' Israel, quando ascenderono d'Egitto. E Cineo si partì di mezzo di Amalec.
7 Saul then crushed the Amalekites, beginning at Havilah in the direction of Shur, which is to the east ofEgypt.	7 E Saul percosse Amalec, da Evila insino che vieni a Sur, la quale è nelle parti d'Egitto.
8 He took Agag king of the Amalekites alive and, executing the curse of destruction, put al the people tothe sword.	8 E prese Agag, re di Amalec, vivo; e tutto l'altro popolo uccise di coltello.
9 But Saul and the army spared Agag with the best of the sheep and cattle, the fatlings and lambs andal that was good. They did not want to consign these to the curse of destruction; they consigned only what waspoor and worthless.	9 E Saul e il popolo perdonò ad Agag, e agli ottimi greggi delle pecore, e agli armenti, e a tutte le belle cose, e non le vollero guastare; ma qualunque cosa fragile e rifiutata, quella guastarono.
10 The word of Yahweh came to Samuel,	10 E la parola di Dio fu fatta a Samuel, e disse:
11 'I regret having made Saul king, since he has broken his allegiance to me and not carried out myorders.' Samuel was appal ed and cried to Yahweh al night long.	11 Io sono pentito, ch' io feci Saul re; però ch' egli m' hae lasciato, e le mie parole non ha fatte per opera. E Samuel sì contristoe, e tutta la notte chiamò a Dio.
12 In the morning, Samuel set off to find Saul. Samuel was told, 'Saul has been to Carmel, to raisehimself a monument there, but now has turned about, moved on and gone down to Gilgal.'	12 E levatosi Samuel di notte, per andare la mattina a Saul, fu significato a Samuel, che Saul era venuto in Carmelo, e avea dirizzato ivi l'arco trionfale; e, tornato, fosse disceso in Galgala. E Samuel venne a Saul; e Saul offeriva lo olocausto a Dio delle primizie della preda che aveano menata di Amalec.
13 When Samuel reached Saul, Saul said, 'May you be blessed by Yahweh! I have carried outYahweh's orders.'	13 E venuto Samuel a Saul, disse a lui: Saul : benedetto si tu da Dio, io ho finita la parola di Dio.
14 Samuel replied, 'Then what is this bleating of sheep in my ears and the lowing of cattle that I hear?'	14 E Samuel disse: e che voce di greggia è questa che mi risuona nelle orecchie, e degli armenti ch' io intendo?
15 Saul said, 'They have been brought from Amalek, the people having spared the best of the sheepand cattle to sacrifice them to Yahweh, your God; the rest we have consigned to the curse of destruction.'	15 E Saul disse: egli le menarono di Amalec; il popolo perdonò a' migliori greggi e armenti, per sacrificare a Dio Signore; tutte le altre abbiamo morte.
16 Samuel then said to Saul, 'Stop! Let me tel you what Yahweh said to me last night.' He said, 'Go on.'	16 E Samuel disse a Saul: audi me, e io ti manifesterò quello che mi ha detto il Signore di notte. E disseli: dì.
17 Samuel said, 'Smal as you may be in your own eyes, are you not the leader of the tribes of Israel?Yahweh has anointed you as king of Israel.	17 E disse Samuel: or, essendo tu piccolo negli occhii tuoi, non fosti tu fatto capo nelle tribù d'Israel? E il Signore unse te re sopra Israel.
18 When Yahweh sent you on a mission he said to you, "Go and put those sinners, the Amalekites,under the curse of destruction and make war on them until they are exterminated."	18 E mandotti per la via, e disse: va, e uccidi gli peccatori di Amalec, e combatterai contro di loro insino alla loro consumazione.
19 Why then did you not obey Yahweh's voice? Why did you fal on the booty and do what is wrong inYahweh's eyes?'	19 Perchè non intendesti la voce di Dio, anzi ti se' convertito alla preda, e hai fatto male nel cospetto di Dio?
20 Saul replied to Samuel, 'But I did obey Yahweh's voice. I went on the mission which Yahweh gaveme; I brought back Agag king of the Amalekites; I put Amalek under the curse of destruction;	20 E Saul disse a Samuel: anzi io hoe intesa la voce di Dio, e sono andato per la via per la quale il Signore mi mandò, e hoe menate Agag re di Amalec, e ho morto Amalec.
21 and from the booty the people have taken the best sheep and cattle of what was under the curse ofdestruction only to sacrifice them to Yahweh your God in Gilgal.'	21 Il popolo ha tolto della preda pecore e buoi, primizie di quelle che sono uccise, per sacrificare al suo Signore Iddio in Galgala.
22 To which, Samuel said: Is Yahweh pleased by burnt offerings and sacrifices or by obedience toYahweh's voice? Truly, obedience is better than sacrifice, submissiveness than the fat of rams.	22 E Samuel disse: vuole egli Iddio vittime ovvero olocausto, e non che sia obbedito alla voce sua? Ella è migliore la obbedienza delle vittime; è ascoltare più che offerire il grasso de' montoni.
23 Rebellion is a sin of sorcery, presumption a crime of idolatry! 'Since you have rejected Yahweh'sword, he has rejected you as king.'	23 Però che repugnare è come il peccato dello indivinare; e non volere consentire, come il peccato della idolatria: e però che tu hai cacciata via la parola di Dio, Iddio hae cacciato te, che tu non sii re sopra Israel.
24 Saul then said to Samuel, 'I have sinned, having broken Yahweh's order and your instructionsbecause I was afraid of the people and yielded to their demands.	24 E Saul disse a Samuel: io hoe peccato, però ch' io ho prevaricato la parola di Dio e la tua, temendo il popolo e obbedendo la voce loro.
25 Now, please forgive my sin and come back with me, so that I can worship Yahweh.'	25 Ma io ti prego che tu porti testeso, mio peccato; e ritorna meco, ch' io adori il Signore.
26 Samuel said to Saul, 'I wil not come back with you, since you have rejected Yahweh's word andYahweh has rejected you as king of Israel.'	26 E Samuel disse a Saul: non tornerò teco, imperò che tu hae gettata la parola di Dio; e Iddio t'ha gittato, che tu non sie re d'Israel.
27 As Samuel turned away to leave, Saul caught at the hem of his cloak and it tore,	27 E voltossi Samuel per andarsene: e quegli prese la sommità del suo mantello, lo quale si squarciò.
28 and Samuel said to him, 'Today Yahweh has torn the kingdom of Israel from you and given it to aneighbour of yours who is better than you.'	28 E Samuel disse: oggi hae diviso Iddio il regno d' Israel da te, e hallo dato al tuo prossimo, migliore di te.
29 (The Glory of Israel, however, does not lie or go back on his word, not being human and liable to goback on his word.)	29 E lo trionfatore d' Israel non perdona, e non si chinerà per pentimento; però che non è uomo che si penta.
30 'I have sinned,' Saul said, 'but please stil show me respect in front of my people's elders and in frontof Israel, and come back with me, so that I can worship Yahweh your God.'	30 E quegli disse: io hoe peccato, ma priegoti che tu mi onori nel cospetto de' maggiori del popolo mio, e in cospetto d' Israel; ritorna meco, acciò ch' io adori il tuo Signore Iddio.
31 Samuel fol owed Saul back and Saul worshipped Yahweh.	31 E Samuel ritornò, e seguitò Saul; e Saul adorò Dio.
32 Samuel then said, 'Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites!' Agag came towards him unsteadilysaying, 'Truly death is bitter!'	32 E Samuel disse: menatemi Agag re di Amalec. E fugli menato dinanzi Agag, grassissimo, tremando. E Agag disse: or così mi separa la morte amara?
33 Samuel said: As your sword has left women childless, so wil your mother be left childless amongwomen! Samuel then butchered Agag before Yahweh at Gilgal.	33 E Samuel disse: come il tuo coltello fe' le femine essere senza figliuoli, così senza figliuoli sarà la tua madre tra le femine. E tagliollo Samuel, in cospetto di Dio, in Galgala.
34 Samuel left for Ramah, and Saul went up home to Gibeah of Saul.	34 E andossene Samuel in Ramata, Saul ascendendo in casa sua in Gabaa.
35 Samuel did not see Saul again til his dying day. Samuel indeed mourned over Saul, but Yahwehregretted having made Saul king of Israel.	35 E da indi inanzi non vide più Samuel Saul insino al dì della morte sua. Ma nondimeno Samuel piagnea Saul; però che Iddio era pentito, che colui l' avea fatto re sopra Israel.
