1 How the gold has tarnished, how the fine gold has changed! The sacred stones lie scattered at thecorner of every street.	1 ALEPH. Come mai si è oscurato l'oro, il suo bel colore si è cangiato, sono disperse le pietre del santuario pegli angoli di tutte le piazze?
2 The children of Zion, as precious as finest gold -- to think that they should now be reckoned likecrockery made by a potter!	2 BETH. I figliuoli illustri di Sion, che eran vestiti di oro finissimo, come mai sono stimati quasi vasi di terra cotta, lavoro di uno stovigliaio?
3 The very jackals give the breast, and suckle their young: but the daughter of my people is as cruel asthe ostriches of the desert.	3 GHIMEL. Ma le la mie stesse scuoprono le loro mammelle, allattano i loro parti: crudele la figlia del popol mio, che imita lo struzzolo del deserto.
4 The tongue of the baby at the breast sticks to its palate for thirst; little children ask for bread, no onegives them any.	4 DALETH. La lingua del bambino di latte rimase attaccata al palato di lui per la sete: i fanciulli domandavan del pane, e non era chi lor lo spezzasse.
5 Those who used to eat only the best, now lie dying in the streets; those who were reared in the purpleclaw at the rubbish heaps,	5 HE. Quelli, che banchettavano tralle delizie, son periti in mezzo alle strade: quegli, che erano stati allevati nella porpora, hanno brancicato lo sterco.
6 for the wickedness of the daughter of my people exceeded the sins of Sodom, which was overthrown ina moment without a hand being laid on it.	6 VAU. Ed è stata maggiore l'iniquità della figlia del popol mio, che il peccato di Sodoma, la quale fu atterrata in un punto, e mano di uomo non principiò a minarla.
7 Once her young people were brighter than snow, whiter than milk; rosier than coral their bodies, theirhue like sapphire.	7 ZAIN. I suoi Nazaret eran più candidi che la neve più puri del latte, rosseggiaci più dell'avorio, più belli dei saffiri.
8 Now their faces are blacker than soot, they are not recognised in the streets, the skin has shrunk overtheir bones, as dry as a stick.	8 HETH. La loro faccia è più nera dei carboni, e non si riconoscono pelle strade: la loro pelle è attaccata alle ossa, e in aridita, e fatta simile al legno.
9 Happier those killed by the sword than those kil ed by famine: they waste away, sunken for lack of thefruits of the earth.	9 TETH. Migliore fu la condizione di que', che furon uccisi di spada, che di quelli, che moriron di fame: perocché questi si strussero consunti per la sterilità della terra.
10 With their own hands, kindly women cooked their children; this was their food when the daughter ofmy people was ruined.	10 JOD. Le mani delle donne compassionevoli misero a cuocere i loro figli; questi furono il loro cibo nella calamità della figlia del popol mio.
11 Yahweh indulged his fury, he vented his fierce anger, he lit a fire in Zion which devoured herfoundations.	11 CAPH. Il Signore ha sfogato il suo furore, ha versata l'ira di sua indignazione, ha acceso in Sion il fuoco, che ha divorate le sue fondamenta.
12 The kings of the earth never believed, nor did any of the inhabitants of the world, that foe or enemywould ever penetrate the gates of Jerusalem.	12 LAMED. Non credevano i re della terra, e gli abitatori tutti del mondo, che il nemico, e l'avversario entrerebbe nelle porte di Gerusalemme;
13 Owing to the sins of her prophets and the crimes of her priests, who had shed the blood of the upright,in the heart of the city,	13 MEM. Pe' peccati, e pelle iniquità de' suoi profeti, e de suoi sacerdoti, i quali sparsero in mezzo a lei il sangue de' giusti.
14 they wandered blindly through the streets, polluted with blood, so that no one dared to touch theirclothes.	14 NUN. Andavano errando quai ciechi pelle piazze, lordati di sangue, e non potend' altro, si alzavan le estremità della veste:
15 'Keep away! Unclean!' people shouted, 'Keep away! Keep away! Don't touch!' If they left and fled tothe nations, they were not al owed to stay there either.	15 SAMECH. Ritiratevi impuri che siete, dicevan gridando agli altri, ritiratevi, andate via, non ci toccate: perocché hanno fatta rissa, e sdegnati disser tralle nazioni: Ei non abiterà più tra di loro.
16 The face of Yahweh destroyed them, he wil look on them no more. There was no respect for thepriests, no deference for the elders.	16 PHE. La faccia (irata) del Signore gli ha dispersi: ei non volgerà più ad esse il suo sguardo: non hanno avuto rispetto alla faccia de' sacerdoti, né hanno avuto compassione pe' seniori.
17 Continual y we were wearing out our eyes, watching for help -- in vain. From our towers we watchedfor a nation which could not save us anyway.	17 AIN. Quando noi oravamo tuttora in piedi, si stancarono gli occhi nostri rivolti al vano soccorso nostro, e ad una nazione, che non poteva salvarci.
18 Men dogged our steps, to keep us out of our streets. Our end was near, our days were done, our endhad come.	18 SADE. I nostri piedi trovavano inciampo nell'andar pelle nostre piazze, il nostro fine si appressò, i nostri giorni si son compiuti, perchè è venuto il nostro termine.
19 Our pursuers were swifter than eagles in the sky; they hounded our steps through the mountains, theylay in ambush for us in the wilds.	19 COPH. I nemici nostri furono più veloci, che le aquile del cielo, ci hanno per seguitati pelle montagne, ci hanno tese insidie nel deserto.
20 The breath of our nostrils, Yahweh's anointed, was caught in their traps, he of whom we said, 'In hisshadow we shall live among the nations.'	20 RES. Il Cristo, il Signore, spirito di nostra bocca e stato preso pe' nostri peccati: cui noi abbiam detto: all'ombra tua viveremo tralle nazioni.
21 Rejoice, exult, daughter of Edom, you who reside in Uz! To you in turn the cup wil pass; you wil getdrunk and strip yourself naked!	21 SIN. Rallegrati, e fa festa, o figlia di Edom, che abiti nella terra di Hus: a te ancora giungerà il calice, sarai inebriata, e denudata.
22 Your wickedness is atoned for, daughter of Zion, he will never banish you again. But your wickedness,daughter of Edom, wil he punish, your sins he will lay bare!	22 THAU. La tua iniquità ha un termine, o figlia di Sion: ei non ti farà più cangiar di paese. Egli punirà la tua iniquità, o figlia di Edom, discoprirà i tuoi peccati.
