NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Then the upright will stand up boldly to face those who had oppressed him and had thought so little of his sufferings.	1 Allora il giusto starà con molta franchezza di fronte a quanti l'hanno oppresso e a quanti hanno disprezzato le sue sofferenze.
2 And, seeing him, they wil be seized with terrible fear, amazed that he should have been sounexpectedly saved.	2 Vedendolo saranno sconvolti da terribile paura e resteranno stupefatti per l'inaspettata salvezza.
3 Stricken with remorse, they wil say to one another with groans and labouring breath,	3 Pentiti, diranno fra di loro, e per angustia di spirito si lamenteranno dicendo:
4 'This is the one whom we used to mock, making him the butt of our insults, fools that we were! His lifewe regarded as madness, his ending as without honour.	4 "Questi è colui che una volta abbiamo tenuto come un oggetto di scherno, e per bersaglio di oltraggi. Insensati! Abbiamo stimato la sua vita una follia e la sua fine un disonore.
5 How has he come to be counted as one of the children of God and to have his lot among the holy ones?	5 Come mai è computato tra i figli di Dio e tra i santi è la sua sorte?
6 Clearly we have strayed from the way of truth; the light of justice has not shone for us, the sun has notrisen for us.	6 Abbiamo dunque errato dalla via della verità, la luce della giustizia non è brillata per noi e il sole non è sorto per noi.
7 We have left no path of lawlessness or ruin unexplored, we have crossed deserts where there was notrack, but the way of the Lord is one we have never known.	7 Ci siamo saziati per i sentieri dell'iniquità e della perdizione, abbiamo percorso deserti impraticabili, ma non abbiamo conosciuto la via del Signore.
8 What good has arrogance been to us? What has been the purpose of our riches and boastfulness?	8 Che cosa ci ha giovato l'orgoglio? Che cosa ci ha apportato la ricchezza con l'arroganza?
9 Al those things have passed like a shadow, passed like a fleeting rumour.	9 Tutto è passato come ombra e come fugace notizia,
10 Like a ship that cuts through heaving waves -- leaving no trace to show where it has passed, no wakefrom its keel in the waves.	10 come nave che fende l'acqua agitata, del cui passaggio non resta traccia, né solco della sua carena nei flutti;
11 Or like a bird flying through the air -- leaving no proof of its passing; it whips the light air with the strokeof its pinions, tears it apart in its whirring rush, drives its way onward with sweeping wing, and afterwards no signis seen of its passage.	11 o come uccello che vola per l'aria, della cui corsa non si trova alcun segno, ma percossa l'aura leggera dal tocco delle ali e divisa con la forza dell'impeto, è attraversata dai battiti delle ali, e dopo ciò non si trova in essa segno del passaggio;
12 Or like an arrow shot at a mark, the pierced air closing so quickly on itself, there is no knowing whichway the arrow has passed.	12 o come quando lanciato il dardo verso il bersaglio, l'aria tagliata rifluisce subito su se stessa, cosicché non si può riconoscere il suo percorso,
13 So with us: scarcely born, we disappear; of virtue not a trace have we to show, we have spentourselves in our own wickedness!'	13 così anche noi, appena nati, siamo venuti meno: non abbiamo mostrato alcun segno di virtù, e ci siamo consumati nella nostra malvagità!".
14 For the hope of the godless is like chaff carried on the wind, like fine spray driven by the storm; itdisperses like smoke before the wind, goes away like the memory of a one-day guest.	14 La speranza dell'empio è come pula portata via dal vento, come tenue schiuma sospinta dalla bufera; è dispersa come fumo dal vento e si dilegua come il ricordo dell'ospite di un sol giorno.
15 But the upright live for ever, their recompense is with the Lord, and the Most High takes care of them.	15 I giusti, invece, vivono in eterno, la loro ricompensa è presso il Signore e il Signore si prende cura di loro.
16 So they wil receive the glorious crown and the diadem of beauty from the Lord's hand; for he wilshelter them with his right hand and with his arm he wil shield them.	16 Per questo riceveranno una magnifica corona regale e uno splendido diadema dalla mano del Signore, perché li proteggerà con la destra e con il braccio li difenderà.
17 For armour he will take his jealous love, he wil arm creation to punish his enemies;	17 Assumerà come armatura il suo zelo e userà come arma il creato per far vendetta dei nemici.
18 he wil put on justice as a breastplate, and for helmet wear his forthright judgement;	18 Indosserà come corazza la giustizia e cingerà come elmo un giudizio senza finzione.
19 he wil take up invincible holiness for shield,	19 Assumerà come scudo l'invincibile santità,
20 of his pitiless wrath he will forge a sword, and the universe wil march with him to fight the reckless.	20 affilerà come spada un'ira inesorabile e il mondo combatterà con lui contro gli insensati.
21 Bolts truly aimed, the shafts of lightning wil leap, and from the clouds, as from a ful -drawn bow, fly totheir mark;	21 Partiranno saette ben aggiustate e come da un arco ben teso, dalle nubi, si slanceranno contro il bersaglio;
22 and the catapult wil hurl hailstones charged with fury. The waters of the sea wil rage against them,the rivers engulf them without pity,	22 dalla fionda saranno scagliate grandini piene di collera; infurierà contro di loro l'acqua del mare e i fiumi strariperanno senza pietà.
23 a mighty gale wil rise against them and winnow them like a hurricane. Thus wickedness wil lay thewhole earth waste and evil-doing bring down the thrones of the mighty.	23 Si leverà su di loro lo Spirito dell'Onnipotente, li disperderà come un uragano: l'iniquità renderà deserta tutta la terra e la malvagità travolgerà i troni dei potenti.
