Wisdom 12

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA VOLGARE
1 For your imperishable spirit is in everything!	1 Come è buono e soave lo spirito tuo, Signore, in noi!
2 And thus, gradual y, you correct those who offend; you admonish and remind them of how they havesinned, so that they may abstain from evil and trust in you, Lord.	2 E però castighi tu coloro li quali delle parti errano; di quelle cose che loro peccano, tu gli riprendi; e parli loro, che lasciata la malizia, credano in te, o Signore.
3 The ancient inhabitants of your holy land	3 E però quelli abitatori della tua terra santa, li quali tu spaventasti;
4 you hated for their loathsome practices, their acts of sorcery, and unholy rites.	4 però ch' elli facevano opere, che tu avevi in odio, per malie e ingiusti sacrificii;
5 Those ruthless murderers of children, those eaters of entrails at feasts of human flesh and of blood,those initiates of secret brotherhoods,	5 e ucciditori sanza misericordia de' suoi figliuoli, e mangiatori delle interiora delli uomini, divoratori del sangue di mezzo del sacramento tuo;
6 those murderous parents of defenceless beings, you determined to destroy at our ancestors' hands,	6 e li autori, padri delle sconsigliate anime, li volesti uccidere per le mani de' padri nostri,
7 so that this land, dearer to you than any other, might receive a worthy colony of God's children.	7 acciò che elli conoscessero la degna peregrinazione de' servi di Dio, in quella terra ch' è a te più cara di tutte.
8 Even so, since these were human, you treated them leniently, sending hornets as forerunners of yourarmy, to exterminate them little by little.	8 E ancora perdonasti tu a costoro, sì come a uomini, e mandasti le vespe dinanzi dalla tua oste, per che a poco a poco isterminassono coloro.
9 Not that you were unable to hand the godless over to the upright in pitched battle or destroy them atonce by savage beasts or one harsh word;	9 Non per che tu fossi debile in battaglia a sottomettere li malvagi alli giusti, o vero alle crudeli bestie, o ad esterminargli somigliantemente con dura parola;
10 but, by carrying out your sentences gradual y, you gave them a chance to repent, although you knewthat they were inherently evil, innately wicked,	10 ma comandando alle parti, concedevi luogo di penitenza, sappiendo bene che la loro generazione era malvagia, e che in loro vanitade era malizia, perchè il loro pensiero non si poteva mutare in perpetuo.
11 and fixed in their cast of mind; for they were a race accursed from the beginning. Nor was it from aweof anyone that you let their sins go unpunished.	11 Il loro seme era maledetto dal cominciamento; e [per] che non temevi alcuno, perdonanza davi alli loro peccati.
12 For who is there to ask, 'What have you done?' Or who is there to disagree with your sentence? Whoto arraign you for destroying nations which you have created? Who to confront you by championing the wicked?	12 Or chi sarà colui che dica a te: che hai tu fatto? Or chi starà contro alla tua sentenza? Or chi per vendicare li malvagi uomini verrà nel conspetto tuo? Or chi imputerà a te, se (loro) periranno le genti che tu facesti?
13 For there is no god, other than you, who cares for every one, to whom you have to prove that yoursentences have been just.	13 Non è altro Iddio, che te; al quale è cura di tutte le cose, acciò che tu dimostri che tu non sentenzii ingiustamente.
14 No more could any king or despot chal enge you over those whom you have punished.	14 Nè re nè tiranno nel conspetto tuo chiederanno di coloro che tu facesti perdere (e morire).
15 For, being upright yourself, you rule the universe uprightly, and hold it as incompatible with yourpower to condemn anyone who has not deserved to be punished.	15 Adunque, conciosia cosa che tu sia giusto, giustamente disponi tutte le cose; e condanni anco colui che non deve essere punito, e distermini dalla tua virtù.
16 For your strength is the basis of your saving justice, and your sovereignty over al makes you lenientto al .	16 La tua virtù sì è principio di giustizia; però che tu se' Signore di tutti, a tutti fai perdonanza.
17 You show your strength when people will not believe in your absolute power, and you confound anyinsolence in those who do know it.	17 Tu dimostri virtù, il quale non se' creduto essere perfetto in virtù; e coloro che non ti conoscono, li trasporti in audacia.
18 But you, control ing your strength, are mild in judgement, and govern us with great lenience, for youhave only to wil , and your power is there.	18 Ma tu, signoreggiatore di virtù, digiudichi con tranquillitade, e con grande riverenza ne disponi noi; la potenza è sotto te, quando tu vuoli.
19 By acting thus, you have taught your people that the upright must be kindly to his fel ows, and youhave given your children the good hope that after sins you wil grant repentance.	19 Tu ammaestrasti il popolo tuo per tali opere, però che si conviene che questo sia giusto e umano, e di buona speranza tu facesti li tuoi figliuoli; però che tu se' giudicante, e che dài luogo nelli peccati alla penitenza.
20 For, if with such care and indulgence you have punished your children's enemies, though doomed todeath, and have given them time and place to be rid of their wickedness,	20 Or se li nimici de' servi tuoi, e degni di morte, tu li tormentasti con tanta attenzione (e liberasti), dando luogo e tempo ch' elli si potessono mutare della loro malizia,
21 with what exact attention have you not judged your children, to whose ancestors, by oaths andcovenants, you made such generous promises?	21 con quanta diligenza giudichi tu li figliuoli tuoi, alli cui padri tu giurasti e pattovisti buone promessioni?
22 Thus, you instruct us, when you punish our enemies in moderation, that we should reflect on yourkindness when we judge, and, when we are judged, we should look for mercy.	22 Dunque, quando tu ne ammaestri, tu flagelli li nimici nostri in molte maniere, acciò che noi giudicando pensiamo la bontade tua; e quando di noi si giudica, speriamo la tua misericordia.
23 And this is why people leading foolish and wicked lives were tortured by you with their ownabominations;	23 Onde e a coloro che in loro vita vivettono disensatamente e ingiustamente, dèsti loro sommi tormenti per queste cose ch' elli adoronno.
24 for they had strayed too far on the paths of error by taking the vilest and most despicable of animalsfor gods, being deluded like sil y little children.	24 Però che molto tempo elli andarono per la via dello errore, giudicando essere iddii quelle imagini le quali colle mani feciono indarno, vivendo a modo di stolti e di fanciulli.
25 So, as to children with no sense, you gave them a sentence making fools of them.	25 Per questo dèsti loro giudicio in loro ischernimento, sì come ad insensati fanciulli.
26 Those, however, who would not take warning from a mocking reproof were soon to endure asentence worthy of God.	26 Ma coloro che non sono corretti per li beffamenti e per le riprensioni, hanno poi provato (e sentito) il degno giudicio di Dio.
27 The creatures that made them suffer and against which they protested, those very creatures that theyhad taken for gods and by which they were punished they saw in their true light; and he whom hitherto they hadrefused to know, they realised was true God. And this is why the final condemnation fell on them.	27 Però che in quelle cose elli pativano (molestamente sosteneano, nelle quali sosteneano) s' indignavano, per quelle nelle quali loro pensavano essere iddii, quando elli erano sterminati, vedendo colui il quale prima negavano, riconobbero lui esser vero Iddio; per la quale cosa la fine della condannagione loro si venne sopra loro.
