Al eluia! Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, his faithful love is everlasting! | 1 Hallelujah! Give thanks to the LORD, who is good, whose love endures forever. |
Who can recount al Yahweh's triumphs, who can ful y voice his praise? | 2 Who can tell the mighty deeds of the LORD, proclaim in full God's praise? |
How blessed are those who keep to what is just, whose conduct is always upright! | 3 Happy those who do what is right, whose deeds are always just. |
Remember me, Yahweh, in your love for your people. Come near to me with your saving power, | 4 Remember me, LORD, as you favor your people; come to me with your saving help, |
let me share the happiness of your chosen ones, let me share the joy of your people, the pride ofyour heritage. | 5 That I may see the prosperity of your chosen, rejoice in the joy of your people, and glory with your heritage. |
Like our ancestors, we have sinned, we have acted wickedly, guiltily; | 6 We have sinned like our ancestors; we have done wrong and are guilty. |
our ancestors in Egypt never grasped the meaning of your wonders. They did not bear in mind yourcountless acts of love, at the Sea of Reeds they defied the Most High; | 7 Our ancestors in Egypt did not attend to your wonders. They did not remember your great love; they defied the Most High at the Red Sea. |
but for the sake of his name he saved them, to make known his mighty power. | 8 Yet he saved them for his name's sake to make his power known. |
At his rebuke the Sea of Reeds dried up, he let them pass through the deep as though it were desert, | 9 He roared at the Red Sea and it dried up. He led them through the deep as through a desert. |
so he saved them from their opponents' clutches, rescued them from the clutches of their enemies. | 10 He rescued them from hostile hands, freed them from the power of the enemy. |
The waters enveloped their enemies, not one of whom was left. | 11 The waters covered their oppressors; not one of them survived. |
Then they believed what he had said, and sang his praises. | 12 Then they believed his words and sang songs of praise. |
But they soon forgot his achievements, they did not even wait for his plans; | 13 But they soon forgot all he had done; they had no patience for his plan. |
they were overwhelmed with greed in the wastelands, in the solitary wastes they challenged God. | 14 In the desert they gave way to their cravings, tempted God in the wasteland. |
He gave them al they asked for, but struck them with a deep wasting sickness; | 15 So he gave them what they asked and sent among them a wasting disease. |
in the camp they grew jealous of Moses, and of Aaron, Yahweh's holy one. | 16 In the camp they challenged Moses and Aaron, the holy one of the LORD. |
The earth opened and swal owed up Dathan, closed in on Abiram's faction; | 17 The earth opened and swallowed Dathan, it closed on the followers of Abiram. |
fire flamed out against their faction, the renegades were engulfed in flames. | 18 Against that company the fire blazed; flames consumed the wicked. |
At Horeb they made a calf, bowed low before cast metal; | 19 At Horeb they fashioned a calf, worshiped a metal statue. |
they exchanged their glory for the image of a grass-eating bull. | 20 They exchanged their glorious God for the image of a grass-eating bull. |
They forgot the God who was saving them, who had done great deeds in Egypt, | 21 They forgot the God who saved them, who did great deeds in Egypt, |
such wonders in the land of Ham, such awesome deeds at the Sea of Reeds. | 22 Amazing deeds in the land of Ham, fearsome deeds at the Red Sea. |
He thought of putting an end to them, had not Moses, his chosen one, taken a stand in the breachand confronted him, to turn his anger away from destroying them. | 23 He would have decreed their destruction, had not Moses, the chosen leader, Withstood him in the breach to turn back his destroying anger. |
They counted a desirable land for nothing, they put no trust in his promise; | 24 Next they despised the beautiful land; they did not believe the promise. |
they stayed in their tents and grumbled, they would not listen to Yahweh's voice. | 25 In their tents they complained; they did not obey the LORD. |
So he lifted his hand against them, to strike them down in the desert, | 26 So with raised hand he swore to destroy them in the desert, |
to strike down their descendants among the nations, to scatter them al over the world. | 27 To scatter their descendants among the nations, disperse them in foreign lands. |
They committed themselves to serve Baal-Peor, and ate sacrifices made to lifeless gods. | 28 They joined in the rites of Baal of Peor, ate food sacrificed to dead gods. |
They so provoked him by their actions that a plague broke out among them. | 29 They provoked him by their actions, and a plague broke out among them. |
Then up stood Phinehas to intervene, and the plague was checked; | 30 Then Phinehas rose to intervene, and the plague was brought to a halt. |
for this he is the example of uprightness, from age to age for ever. | 31 This was counted for him as a righteous deed for all generations to come. |
At the waters of Meribah they so angered Yahweh, that Moses suffered on their account, | 32 At the waters of Meribah they angered God, and Moses suffered because of them. |
for they had embittered his spirit, and he spoke without due thought. | 33 They so embittered his spirit that rash words crossed his lips. |
They did not destroy the nations, as Yahweh had told them to do, | 34 They did not destroy the peoples as the LORD had commanded them, |
but intermarried with them, and adopted their ways. | 35 But mingled with the nations and imitated their ways. |
They worshipped those nations' false gods, til they found themselves entrapped, | 36 They worshiped their idols and were ensnared by them. |
and sacrificed their own sons and their daughters to demons. | 37 They sacrificed to the gods their own sons and daughters, |
Innocent blood they shed, the blood of their sons and daughters; offering them to the idols ofCanaan, they pol uted the country with blood. | 38 Shedding innocent blood, the blood of their own sons and daughters, Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, desecrating the land with bloodshed. |
They defiled themselves by such actions, their behaviour was that of a harlot. | 39 They defiled themselves by their actions, became adulterers by their conduct. |
Yahweh's anger blazed out at his people, his own heritage fil ed him with disgust. | 40 So the LORD grew angry with his people, abhorred his own heritage. |
He handed them over to the nations, and their opponents became their masters; | 41 He handed them over to the nations, and their adversaries ruled them. |
their enemies lorded it over them, crushing them under their rule. | 42 Their enemies oppressed them, kept them under subjection. |
Time and again he rescued them, but they stil defied him deliberately, and sank ever deeper in theirguilt; | 43 Many times did he rescue them, but they kept rebelling and scheming and were brought low by their own guilt. |
even so he took pity on their distress, as soon as he heard them cry out. | 44 Still God had regard for their affliction when he heard their wailing. |
Bearing his covenant with them in mind, he relented in his boundless and faithful love; | 45 For their sake he remembered his covenant and relented in his abundant love, |
he ensured that they received compassion, in their treatment by al their captors. | 46 Winning for them compassion from all who held them captive. |
Save us, Yahweh our God, gather us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holyname, and may glory in praising you. | 47 Save us, LORD, our God; gather us from among the nations That we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in praising you. |
Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, from all eternity and for ever! Let all the people say, 'Amen'. | 48 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting! Let all the people say, Amen! Hallelujah! |
