1 While the holy city was inhabited in al peace and the laws were observed as perfectly as possible,owing to the piety of Onias the high priest and his hatred of wickedness,	1 Conciosiacosa adunque che la santa città si abitasse in ogni pace, e anche la legge ottimamente si osservasse per cagion della disposizione di Onia e della sua pietà, e per gli animi che aveano in odio le cose malfatte,
2 it came about that the kings themselves honoured the holy place and enhanced the glory of the Templewith the most splendid offerings,	2 facevasi che anco essi re e principi conducessono il suo luogo degno con sommo onore, e nobilitassono il templo di grandi doni;
3 even to the extent that Seleucus king of Asia defrayed from his own revenues al the expenses arisingout of the sacrificial liturgy.	3 sì che Seleuco, re di Asia, donasse delle sue entrate tutte le spese che s' appartenevano al ministerio del sacrificio.
4 But a certain Simon, of the tribe of Bilgah, on being appointed administrator of the Temple, came intoconflict with the high priest over the regulation of the city markets.	4 E Simone della tribù di Beniamin, constituito preposito del tempio, contendeva, contrastante a lui il principe de' sacerdoti, di (fabbricare, ovver) ordinare alcuna cosa iniqua nella cittade.
5 Unable to get the better of Onias, he went off to Apol onius, son of Thraseos, who was at that timecommander-in-chief of Coele-Syria and Phoenicia,	5 Ma vedendo non poter vincere Onia, venne ad Apollonio figliuolo di Tarsea, lo qual in quel tempo era duca della Celesiria e di Fenicia.
6 and made out to him that the Treasury in Jerusalem was groaning with untold wealth, that the amountcontributed was incalculable and out of all proportion to expenditure on the sacrifice, but that it could al bebrought under the control of the king.	6 E nunciolli, lo erario di Ierusalem esser pieno di una innumerabile quantità di denari, e una immensa (quantità e) copia di comuni cose, la quale non s'appartiene alla ragione de' sacrificii; ed esser possibile che tutte queste cose cadesse sotto la podestà del re.
7 Apol onius met the king and told him about the wealth that had been disclosed to him; whereupon theking selected Heliodorus, his chancel or, and sent him with instructions to effect the removal of the reportedwealth.	7 E Apollonio, avendolo riferito al re delle pecunie che gli era stato nunciato, esso, chiamato Eliodoro, lo qual era sopra le sue faccende, mandollo con comandamenti, che questa predetta pecunia (li fosse mandata, e che lui la) transportasse.
8 Heliodorus lost no time in setting out, ostensibly to inspect the towns of Coele-Syria and Phoenicia, butin fact to accomplish the king's purpose.	8 Subito Eliodoro si pose in via, sotto specie quasi di andar per le cittadi di Celesiria e di Fenicia; ma secondo la verità andava per adempire il proposito del re.
9 On his arrival in Jerusalem, and after a hospitable reception from the high priest and the city, heannounced what had been disclosed, thus revealing the reason for his presence, and asked if this was indeedthe true situation.	9 Ed essendo venuto in Ierusalem, ed essendo ricevuto benignamente dal sommo sacerdote nella città, narrò dello avviso ch' era stato dato delle pecunie; e manifestò per che cagione ch' egli era venuto; e domandava se queste cose erano vere.
10 The high priest explained that there were funds set aside for widows and orphans,	10 Allora il sommo sacerdote li dimostrò li depositi esser alla vita delle vedove e delli pupilli;
11 with some belonging to Hyrcanus son of Tobias, a man occupying a very exalted position, and thatthe whole sum, in contrast to what the evil Simon had al eged, amounted to four hundred talents of silver andtwo hundred of gold.	11 e alcune cose esser di Ircano Tobia, uomo molto grande e nobile, in quelle cose che avea riferito quello malvagio Simone; e tutto quello ch' era ivi, era quattrocento talenti d' ariento, e ducento talenti d'oro.
12 He also added that it was entirely out of the question that an injustice should be done to those whohad put their trust in the sanctity of the place and in the inviolable majesty of a Temple venerated throughout theentire world.	12 E saria appo noi al tutto impossibile permettere che fusse ingannati quelli i quali hannosi fidati di noi, e hanno posto in custodia lo aver suo nel tempio lo qual è avuto in venerazione per tutto il mondo per la sua santità.
13 But Heliodorus, because of his instructions from the king, peremptorily insisted that the funds must beconfiscated for the royal exchequer.	13 Ed Eliodoro, per quello che lui avea in comandamento del re, diceva che bisognava sanza alcuna contraddizione, che li fusse portato al re ogni cosa.
14 Fixing a day for the purpose, he went in to draw up an inventory of the funds. There was no littleconsternation throughout the city;	14 E il dì constituito (e ordinato) entrò Eliodoro per ordinare di far condurre questo al re. E per questo non era poco timore per tutta la città.
15 the priests in their sacred vestments prostrated themselves before the altar and prayed to Heaven, tothe Author of the law governing deposits, to preserve these funds intact for the depositors.	15 E i sacerdoti stavano dinanzi all' altare prostrati con le stole, e invocavano dal cielo colui lo qual avea posto la legge dei depositi (cioè chiamavano Iddio), acciò che lui conservasse le robe salve a coloro i quali le aveano poste in deposito.
16 The appearance of the high priest was enough to pierce the heart of the beholder, his expression andhis altered colour betraying the anguish of his soul;	16 E già colui che vedea il volto del sommo sacerdote, percoteasi nella mente (e attristavasi); però la faccia e il colore, ch' era immutato, declarava lo intrinseco (suo) dolore dell' animo.
17 the man was so overwhelmed by fear and bodily trembling that those who saw him could not possiblymistake the distress he was suffering.	17 Però che una mestizia d'animo e uno spavento del corpo avea circondato il sommo sacerdote, per lo qual lo dolor del cuore suo a tutti che il vedeano era manifesto.
18 People rushed headlong from the houses, intent on making public supplication because of theindignity threatening the holy place.	18 E anco molti altri, congregati delle case, veniano pregando con una pubblica petizione, però che il luogo santo era venuto in disprezzo.
19 Women thronged the streets swathed in sackcloth below their breasts; girls secluded indoors camerunning, some to the doorways, some to the city walls, while others leaned out of the windows,	19 E le donne uscivano per le piazze, cinti i cilicii al petto; e anco le vergini, ch' erano chiuse, sollecitamente correvano a Onia; alcune altre alle mura; e alcune guardavano per le finestre;
20 al stretching out their hands to Heaven in entreaty.	20 e tutte levando le mani al cielo.
21 It was pitiful to see the people crowding together to prostrate themselves, and the foreboding of thehigh priest in his deep anguish.	21 Ed era una misera espettazione della moltitudine mista insieme, e del grande sacerdote constituito nel luogo della contenzione.
22 While they were cal ing on the al -powerful Lord to preserve the deposits intact for the depositors, inful security,	22 E tutti questi gridavano a Dio onnipotente, che lui conservasse quelle cose le quali (con fiducia grande) li erano state date in custodia, per quelli i quali si fidavano di loro.
23 Heliodorus set about his appointed task.	23 Ma Eliodoro ciò ch' egli avea deliberato mandava ad effetto, presente lui in quello medesimo luogo dell' erario con li suoi satelliti.
24 He had already arrived with his bodyguard near the Treasury, when the Sovereign of spirits and ofevery power caused so great an apparition that all who had dared to accompany Heliodorus were dumbfoundedat the power of God and reduced to abject terror.	24 Ma il spirito di Dio onnipotente fece una grande evidenza di dimostrazione, per tal modo che tutti quelli, che furono arditi d' ubbidirli, per la virtù di Dio precipitando, loro furono convertiti in gran paura, sì che tutti s'erano divisi uno dall' altro molto.
25 Before their eyes appeared a horse richly caparisoned and carrying a fearsome rider. Rearingviolently, it struck at Heliodorus with its forefeet. The rider was seen to be accoutred entirely in gold.	25 Però che apparve loro uno cavallo, il qual avea uno terribile (assessore e) cavalcatore, adornato di ottime vestimenta; e costui con impeto percosse prima con li calci Eliodoro; e colui che sedeva sopra il cavallo parea che avesse l'arme d'oro.
26 Two other young men of outstanding strength and radiant beauty, magnificently apparel ed, appearedto him at the same time and, taking their stand on each side of him, flogged him unremittingly, inflicting strokeafter stroke.	26 E anco apparvono due altri giovani, ornati di bellezza, ottimi di gloria e vestiti di belle vestimenta, li quali lo circondorono, e da ciascuna parte lo flagellavano sanza dimora, percotendolo di molte piaghe.
27 Suddenly Heliodorus fel to the ground, enveloped in thick darkness. His men came to his rescue andplaced him in a litter,	27 E subitamente Eliodoro cadette in terra, e preserlo, essendo involuto di molta caligine, e posto di sopra una sedia portatile e' fu portato via.
28 this man who but a moment before had made his way into the Treasury, as we said above, with agreat retinue and his whole bodyguard; and as they carried him away, powerless to help himself, they openlyacknowledged the sovereign power of God.	28 E colui, il quale era entrato con molti corsieri e satelliti nel predetto erario, era portato non avendo ausilio alcuno, conosciuta la virtù di Dio manifesta.
29 While Heliodorus lay prostrate under the divine visitation, speechless and bereft of al hope ofdeliverance,	29 E lui istava muto mediante la virtù di Dio, privato di ogni speranza e salute.
30 the Jews blessed the Lord who had miraculously glorified his own holy place. And the Temple, whicha little while before had been fil ed with terror and commotion, now overflowed with joy and gladness at themanifestation of the almighty Lord.	30 Eli altri benedicevano il Signore, però ch' egli magnificava il suo luogo; e lo tempio, lo qual poco inanzi era pieno di paura e di tumulto, apparendo lo Signore onnipotente, fu riempiuto di gaudio e di letizia.
31 Some of Heliodorus' companions quickly begged Onias to entreat the Most High to grant the man hislife, lying as he did at the very point of death.	31 E allora alcuni degli amici di Eliodoro pregavano con instanza Onia, ch' egli pregasse lo Altissimo, che li dèsse la vita, lo qual era constituito nel supremo spirito.
32 The high priest, afraid that the king might suspect the Jews of some foul play concerning Heliodorus,did indeed offer a sacrifice for the man's recovery.	32 E considerando il sommo sacerdote, che forse il re non suspicasse alcuna malizia esser usata per i Giudei contro a Eliodoro, offerse per la salute sua sacrificio di salute.
33 And while the high priest was performing the rite of expiation, the same young men again appeared toHeliodorus, wearing the same apparel and, standing beside him, said, 'Be very grateful to Onias the high priest,since it is for his sake that the Lord has granted you your life.	33 E pregando il sommo sacerdote, quelli medesimi giovani con quelle istesse vesti vestiti, istando presenti a Eliodoro, dissono: riferisci grazia a Onia sacerdote, però che per suo amore il Signore t' ha donata la vita.
34 As for you, who have been scourged by Heaven, you must proclaim to everyone the grandeur ofGod's power.' So saying, they vanished.	34 E tu così flagellato [da Dio] nuncia agli altri le cose grandi di Dio e la sua podestà. E dette queste parole, non comparveno piò.
35 Heliodorus offered sacrifice to the Lord and made most solemn vows to the preserver of his life, andthen took courteous leave of Onias and marched his forces back to the king.	35 Ed Eliodoro, offerta l'ostia a Dio, e fatti grandi voti (e promissioni) a colui che li concesse la vita (cioè a Dio), e referendo grazia a Onia, e chiamato lo esercito, tornava al re.
36 He openly testified to everyone about the works of the supreme God which he had seen with his owneyes.	36 E testificava a tutti quelle cose gra di del grande Iddio, le quali lui avea (provate e) vedute cogli occhi suoi.
37 When the king asked Heliodorus what sort of man would be the right person to send to Jerusalem ona second occasion, he replied,	37 E domandando il re Eliodoro, chi fosse atto di mandar anco in Ierusalem, (ed Eliodoro) disse:
38 'If you have some enemy or anyone disloyal to the state, send him there, and you wil get him backwel flogged, if he survives at al , since some peculiarly divine power attaches to the holy place.	38 Se tu hai alcuno inimico, ovver traditor del tuo regno, mandalo in quel luogo; e lo riaverai flagellato (e straziato), s' egli potrà campare; però che in quel luogo egli è una particolar virtù di Dio.
39 He who has his dwel ing in heaven watches over the place and defends it, and he strikes down anddestroys those who come to harm it.'	39 Però che colui, che ha abitazione in cielo, è visitatore e adiutore di quello luogo; e quelli che vanno per mal fare sono percossi e perduti.
40 This was the outcome of the affair of Heliodorus and the preservation of the Treasury.	40 Di Eliodoro adunque, e dell' erario, così fu la cosa.
