2 Maccabees 13

1 In the year one hundred and forty-nine, Judas and his men discovered that Antiochus Eupator wasadvancing in force against Judaea,	1 Nel centesimo e quadragesimo nono anno, intese Giuda come Antioco (di) Eupatore veniva con grande esèrcito contro Giudea.
2 and with him Lysias his tutor and chief minister; he had moreover a Greek force of one hundred andten thousand infantry, five thousand three hundred cavalry, twenty-two elephants, and three hundred chariotsfitted with scythes.	2 E con lui eravi Lisia, procuratore e proposito delli officii, avente con esso cento e dieci milia uomini da piede, e dei cavalieri cinque milia, e ventidue elefanti, e trecento carri falcati.
3 Menelaus, too, joined them and very craftily kept urging Antiochus on, not for the welfare of his owncountry but in the hope of being restored to office.	3 Con quali etiam accostossi Menelao, il quale con molta fallacia deprecava Antioco, non per la salute della patria, ma sperando di pervenire al principato.
4 But the King of kings stirred up the anger of Antiochus against the guilty wretch, and when Lysiasmade it clear to the king that Menelaus was the cause of all the troubles, Antiochus gave orders for him to betaken to Beroea and there put to death by the local method of execution.	4 Ma il re de' re suscitò l'animo di Antioco contra il peccatore; e persuadendo Lisia, questo essere cagione di tutti i mali, comandò, come egli è di sua consuetudine, che preso fusse ucciso in quel medesimo luogo.
5 In that place there is a tower fifty cubits high, ful of ash, with an internal lip al round overhanging theashes.	5 Onde era in quello medesimo luogo uno monticello d'ogni lato di cenere; guardando questo, era uno grande precipizio.
6 If anyone is convicted of sacrilegious theft or of some other heinous crime, he is taken up to the topand pushed over to perish.	6 Di che comandò che il detto sacrilego fusse gittato giù di quindi nella cenere, constringendolo tutti all' interito.
7 In such a manner was the renegade fated to die; Menelaus had not even the privilege of burial.	7 E convenne esser morto tale prevaricatore di tale legge, e alla terra non esser dato Menelao (il qual fue senza sepultura).
8 Deserved justice, this; since he had committed many sins against the altar, the fire and ashes ofwhich were holy, it was in ashes that he met his death.	8 E certo questo fu fatto molto giustamente; imperò ch' egli avea commesso molti delitti verso l'ara di Dio, la cui cenere e fuoco era santo, egli fu dannato nella morte della cenere.
9 The king, then, was advancing, his mind filled with barbarous designs, to give the Jews ademonstration of far worse things than anything that had happened under his father.	9 Ma il re, isfrenato di mente, veniasi dimostrando alli Giudei più iniquo del suo padre.
10 When Judas heard of this, he ordered the people day and night to cal on the Lord as never before,to come to the help of those who were in peril of being deprived of the Law, their fatherland and the holy Temple,	10 Le quali cose conosciute ch' egli ebbe Giuda, comandò al popolo, che dì e notte invocasseno il Signore, sì come sempre li avea aiutati, così etiam al presente gli aiutasse,
11 and not to al ow the people, just when they were beginning to breathe again, to fall into the power ofil -famed foreigners.	11 come temeano d' essere privati della legge e della patria e del templo santo; ed etiam il popolo, che in breve avea un poco respirato, non permettesse esser più soggiogato alle blasfemie delle nazioni.
12 When they had al , with one voice, obeyed his instructions and had made their petitions to themerciful Lord, weeping, fasting and prostrating themselves for three days continuously, Judas spoke words ofencouragement and told them to keep close to him.	12 Di che tutti insieme facendo questo, e con pianto e digiuni per tre giorni continuamente a terra. gittati domandando la misericordia dal Signore, confortolli Giuda che si apparecchiasseno.
13 After separate consultation with the elders, he resolved not to wait for the king's army to invadeJudaea and take possession of the city, but to march out and settle the whole matter with the Lord's help.	13 Ma egli con li antiqui sì imaginò di uscire fuori prima che il re movesse l' esèrcito contra Giudea, e che soggiogasse le città, e raccomandare l'esito della cosa al giudicio del Signore Iddio.
14 Having thus committed the outcome to the Creator of the world, and having exhorted his soldiers tofight bravely to the death for the laws, the Temple, the city, their country and their way of life, he encamped hisarmy near Modein.	14 E dando la potestà di tutti a Iddio creatore del mondo, confortò li suoi che combattessero (ardita e) fortemente, e che stessero fermi insino alla morte. per la legge e per il tempio e per la città e patria e per li cittadini, e ordinò l'esèrcito appresso di Modin.
15 Giving his men the password 'Victory from God', he made a night attack on the king's pavilion with apicked band of the bravest young men. Inside the camp he destroyed about two thousand, and his men cutdown the largest of the elephants with its mahout;	15 E dato il segno della vittoria di Dio alli suoi fortissimi eletti giovani, di notte assaltata la corte regia, nelli alloggiamenti uccise quattro milia, e il maggiore delli elefanti con quelli che erano sopra posti a quello.
16 having eventual y filled the camp with terror and confusion, they successful y withdrew,	16 Riempiendo li alloggiamenti di sommo spavento e di perturbazione de' nimici, subseguendoli le cose prospere, si partirono.
17 just as dawn was breaking. This was achieved, thanks to the protection which the Lord grantedJudas.	17 Questo adunqne fu fatto incominciando a risplendere il giorno, aitante lui la divina defensione.
18 The king, having had a taste of Jewish daring, now tried to capture their positions by trickery.	18 Ma il re conosciuta la esperienza (e notizia) della audacia de' Giudei, con (ingegni e) arte tentata la difficoltà de' luoghi,
19 He advanced on Beth-Zur, a strong fortress of the Jews, but was checked, overcome and sorepulsed.	19 moveva l'esercito verso Betsura, la quale era uno luogo (fortificato e fornito) di munizione de' Giudei; ma egli era scacciato, dandoli la fuga; era isforzato, e sminuiva d' ogni ora il suo esèrcito.
20 Judas supplied the garrison with what they needed,	20 Onde Giuda mandava le cose necessarie a quelli ch' erano dentro.
21 but Rhodocus, of the Jewish army, supplied the enemy with secret information; the man wasidentified, arrested, and dealt with.	21 Poscia uno dell' esèrcito de' Giudei, chiamato Rodoco, significò li secreti alli inimici; il quale, richiesto, fu pigliato e rinchiuso.
22 A second time, the king parleyed with the garrison of Beth-Zur; he offered and accepted pledges offriendship, retired, then attacked Judas and his men, but lost the battle.	22 Un'altra volta il re fece il parlare a quelli ch' erano in Betsura; detteli la pace, e ricevelli, e partissi.
23 He was then told that Philip, left in charge of affairs, had rebelled in Antioch. He was stunned by this,opened negotiations with the Jews, came to an agreement, and swore to abide by al reasonable conditions.Agreement reached, he offered a sacrifice, honoured the Temple, and made generous gifts to the holy place.	23 Combattendo con Giuda, e' fu vinto. Ma poscia ch' egli intese come Filippo di Antiochia, il qual era rimasto sopra le faccende, avea rebellato, spaventato di mente, deprecando li Giudei, giurolli di esserli suddito a tutte le cose che paiono esser giuste; e riconciliato offerse il sacrificio, e onorò il tempio, e puose li doni.
24 He received Maccabaeus kindly and, leaving Hegemonides to exercise command from Ptolemais tothe territory of the Gerrenians,	24 Abbracciò Maccabeo, e fecelo duce e principe da Tolemaide insino a' Gerreni.
25 went to Ptolemais. The inhabitants of the place disapproved of the treaty; they complained furiouslyand wanted to annul its provisions.	25 Onde venuto a Tolemaida, isdegnati li Tolomesi gravemente tolleravano la convenzione della amicizia, che per avventura non rompessero il patto.
26 Lysias mounted the rostrum and made a convincing defence of the provisions which convinced andcalmed them and won their goodwil . He then withdrew to Antioch. So much for the episode of the king'soffensive and retreat.	26 Allora Lisia salitte sopra il tribunale, ed espose la ragione (della contratta amicizia), e pacificato il popolo, ritornossi in Antiochia; e a questo mcdo procedette l'andare e ritornare del re.
