1 These agreements once concluded, Lysias returned to the king and the Jews went back to theirfarming.	1 Fatti questi accordi, (patti e convenzioni), Lisia se n' andava al re; e i Giudei si esercitavano circa i loro campi e vigne.
2 Among the local generals, Timotheus and Apol onius son of Gennaeus, as also Hieronymus andDemophon, and Nicanor the Cypriarch as wel , would not allow the Jews to live in peace and quiet.	2 Ma coloro che aveano governato dopo, cioè Timoteo e Apollonio figliuolo di Genneo, e anco Ieronimo e Demofonte (superbo) e Nicanore, ch' erano principi in Cipro, non li lasciavano vivere pacifica e quietamente.
3 The people of Joppa committed a particularly wicked crime: they invited the Jews living among themto go aboard some boats they had lying ready, taking their wives and children. There was no hint of any intentionto harm them;	3 E quelli di Ioppe fecero una grande iniquità; pregorono i Giudei, con i quali abitavano, di entrare dentro di alcune navicelle (ovvero baracche) con le loro mogli e figliuoli, le quali loro aveano preparate, come se fra loro non vi fosse alcuna inimicizia.
4 there had been a public vote by the citizens, and the Jews accepted, as wel they might, beingpeaceable people with no reason to suspect anything. But once out in the open sea they were al sent to thebottom, a company of at least two hundred.	4 E secondo il comune statuto della città, loro condiscendendo per cagione di pace, non avendo alcuno sospetto, (essendo adunque entrati i Giudei e partiti), andorono alquanto da lontano, e ivi furono sommersi non meno di ducento.
5 When Judas heard of the cruel fate of his countrymen, he issued his orders to his men	5 La qual crudelità udita Giuda esser fatta contro alla gente della sua patria, comandò agli uomini ch' erano con lui; e invocato Iddio giusto giudice,
6 and after invoking God, the just judge, he attacked his brothers' murderers. Under cover of dark heset fire to the port, burned the boats and put to the sword everyone who had taken refuge there.	6 venne contro a coloro che aveano uccisi li suoi fratelli, e mise fuoco nel porto di notte, e arse le barche; e quelli ch' erano fuggiti dal fuoco, gli uccisero con le coltella.
7 As the town gates were closed, he withdrew, intending to come back and wipe out the wholecommunity of Joppa.	7 E avendo fatto questo, partissi quasi come per dover ritounare un' altra volta, e per eradicare tutti quelli di Ioppe.
8 But hearing that the people of Jamnia were planning to treat their resident Jews in the same way,	8 Ma avendo conosciuto questo, e anco quelli ch' erano in Iamnia volere fare similmente alli Giudei, i quali abitavano con loro,
9 he made a night attack on the Jamnites and fired the port with its fleet; the glow of the flames wasseen as far off as Jerusalem, thirty miles away.	9 sopravenne di notte alla terra de' Iamniti, puose fuoco nel porto e nelle navi, e arsele per tal modo che il fuoco fu veduto per insino a Ierusalem, la qual era distante per spazio di ducento e quaranta stadii.
10 When they had left the town barely a mile behind them in their advance on Timotheus, Judas wasattacked by an Arab force of at least five thousand foot soldiers, with five hundred cavalry.	10 Ed essendo partiti quindi già per spazio di nove stadii, e andando contro a Timoteo, furo alle mani con lui cinque milia Arabi a piedi, e cinquecento cavalli.
11 A fierce engagement fol owed, and with God's help Judas' men won the day; the defeated nomadsbegged Judas to offer them the right hand of friendship, and promised to surrender their herds and makethemselves general y useful to him.	11 Ma facendosi la battaglia molto aspra, mediante lo ausilio di Dio la cosa successe bene alla parte di Giuda; e gli Arabi vinti, quelli che rimasero, addimandarono accordo a Giuda, e che li dovesse mandare per fede a toccare la mano diritta, promettendogli di dare li pascoli, ed esser loro favorevoli nell' altre cose.
12 Realising that they might indeed prove valuable in many ways, Judas consented to make peace withthem and after an exchange of pledges the Arabs withdrew to their tents.	12 Udito questo, Giuda considerò che questo partito li era molto utile; li promesse la pace, e date loro le mani diritte in segno di fede, si partirono e andoronsi alle loro abitazioni.
13 Judas also attacked a certain fortified town, closed by ramparts and inhabited by a medley of races;its name was Caspin.	13 Dopo questo assaltò una città forte, intorniata di ponti e di mura, la quale era abitata da turbe delle genti mescolate (dell' uno e l' altro sesso), lo nome della quale era Casfin.
14 Confident in the strength of their wal s and their stock of provisions, the besieged adopted aninsolent attitude to Judas and his men, reinforcing their insults with blasphemies and profanity.	14 Quelli veramente ch' erano di dentro, si confidavano nella fortezza delle mura e nella abbondanza delle vittuarie; e facevano poca defensione, provocando Giuda con parole scelerate, e bestemmiando, [e dicendo] quello che non è lecito.
15 But Judas and his men invoked the great Sovereign of the world who without battering-ram or siege-engine had overthrown Jericho in the days of Joshua; they then made a fierce assault on the wall.	15 E Maccabeo, avendo invocato il grande principe del mondo, il quale senza bastie, macchine e ingegni al tempo di Iesu precipitò Gerico, andò con grande impeto verso le mura.
16 By God's wil , having captured the town, they made such indescribable slaughter that the nearbylake, a quarter of a mile across, seemed fil ed to overflowing with blood.	16 E salito su mediante la volontà del Signore, pigliò la città, e fece una grande uccisione, per tal modo che uno lago, ch' era appo la citta, largo due stadii (cioè la quarta parte di uno miliaro), fu tutto infetto di sangue.
17 Ninety-five miles further on from there, they reached the Charax, in the country of Jews known asTubians.	17 E partiti indi per spazio di settecento cinquanta stadii (che sono ottantatre miliara, e tre quarti di miliaro), vennero in Caraca a quelli Giudei li quali si chiamavano Tubianei.
18 They did not find Timotheus himself in that neighbourhood; he had already left the district, havingachieved nothing apart from leaving a very strong garrison at one point.	18 E non potero ritrovare Timoteo in quelli luoghi; però che non avendo potuto fare alcuna cosa (in quello luogo), si parti lasciando in quello luogo una fortezza molto bene armata.
19 Dositheus and Sosipater, two of the Maccabaean generals, marched out and destroyed the forceTimotheus had left behind in the fortress, amounting to more than ten thousand men.	19 Ma Dositeo e Sosipatro, li quali erano duchi con Maccabeo, uccisero dieci milia uomini, li quali erano stati lasciati nella fortezza da Timoteo.
20 Maccabaeus himself divided his army into cohorts to which he assigned commanders, and thenhurried in pursuit of Timotheus, whose troops numbered one hundred and twenty thousand infantry and twothousand five hundred cavalry.	20 E Maccabeo, ordinati con sè sei milia uomini, e divisi per squadre, contro a Timoteo se n' andò, il quale avea seco cento venti migliaia di pedoni, e due milia cinquecento cavalieri.
21 Timotheus' first move on learning of Judas' advance was to send away the women and children andthe rest of the baggage train to the place called the Carnaim, since it was an impregnable position, difficult ofaccess owing to the narrowness of al the approaches.	21 Avendo dunque conosciuto lo avvenimento di Giuda, Timoteo antimandò le donne e li figliuoli, e il residuo dell' apparecchio, in una fortezza la quale si chiama Carnion; però ch' era (fortissima e) inespugnabile, per cagione che le vie per le quali si andava alla fortezza erano molto strette, dispiacevoli e pericolose.
22 Judas' cohort came into sight first. The enemy, seized with fright and panic-stricken by themanifestation of the Al -seeing, began to flee, one running this way, one running that, often wounding oneanother in consequence and running on the points of one another's swords.	22 Ed essendo apparita la prima squadra di Giuda, gl' inimici ebbero una grande paura, per cagione della presenza di Dio il quale risguarda tutte cose; e l'uno dall' altro fu posto in fuga, per modo che più dalli suoi furono scacciati, e con le ferite de' suoi coltelli furono debilitati.
23 Judas pursued them with a wil , cutting the sinners to pieces and kil ing something like thirtythousand men.	23 Ma Giuda grandemente instava puniendo li scelerati, e gittò a terra trenta milia uomini di loro.
24 Timotheus himself, having fal en into the hands of Dositheus and Sosipater and their men, verycraftily pleaded with them to let him go with his life, on the grounds that he had the relatives and even thebrothers of many of them in his power, and that these could otherwise expect short shrift.	24 Di che esso Timoteo ricorse nelle parti di Dositeo e di Sosipatro; e pregava con molte preci, che fosse lasciato vivo, conciò sia ch' egli avea li padri e le madri e li fratelli di molti delli Giudei, li quali intraverrebbe essere quelli fraudati per la sua morte.
25 When at long last he convinced them that he would honour his promise and return these people safeand sound, they let him go for the sake of saving their brothers.	25 Ma avendo data la fede di restituirli secondo li constituti, lasciorlo senza alcuna offensione, per la salute de' fratelli.
26 Reaching the Carnaim and the Atargateion, Judas slaughtered twenty-five thousand men.	26 Poscia che Giuda ebbe ucciso venticinque milia uomini, partissi di Carnion.
27 Having defeated and destroyed them, he led his army against Ephron, a fortified town, whereLysanias was living. Stalwart young men drawn up outside the walls offered vigorous resistance, while insidethere were quantities of war-engines and missiles in reserve.	27 Dopo adunque la fuga e la uccisione di questi, movette l'esercito contra Efron, città fortificata, nella quale abitava una moltitudine di diverse genti; e li robusti giovani, stanti per le mura, combattevano fortemente; onde in questa erano molte macchine, e apparati di battaglie.
28 But the Jews, having invoked the Sovereign who by his power shatters enemies' defences, gainedcontrol of the town and cut down nearly twenty-five thousand of the people inside.	28 Ma invocato lo Onnipotente, con la cui potenza confringèro le forze delli inimici, presero la città; e uccisero di quelli che v'erano dentro, venti milia.
29 Moving off from there, they pressed on to Scythopolis,	29 Partiti quindi, andorono alla città de' Sciti, la quale distava da Ierusalem seicento stadii.
30 seventy-five miles from Jerusalem. But as the Jews who had settled there assured Judas that thepeople of Scythopolis had always treated them wel and had been particularly kind to them when times were attheir worst,	30 Onde li Giudei ch' erano appresso li Scitopoliti, contestandoli come da loro sarebbeno accettati benignamente, e ne' tempi infelici, che si portorono modestamente;
31 he and his men thanked them and urged them to extend the same friendship to his race in the future.They reached Jerusalem shortly before the feast of Weeks.	31 quelli referendoli grazie, ed esortati che da quindi innanzi che sarebbero benigni contro la sua generazione, vennero in Ierosolima, instante il dì solenne delle settimane.
32 After Pentecost, as it is cal ed, they marched against Gorgias, the general commanding Idumaea.	32 E dopo le pentecoste andorono contra Gorgia, preposito di Idumea.
33 He came out at the head of three thousand infantry and four hundred cavalry;	33 Il che con tremilia uomini da piede e quattrocento da cavallo.
34 in the course of the ensuing battle a few Jews lost their lives.	34 Li quali assaltati, avvenne poi che rovinorono pochi Giudei.
35 A man called Dositheus, a horseman of the Tubian contingent, a valiant man, overpowered Gorgiasand, gripping him by the cloak, was forcibly dragging him along, intending to take the accursed man alive, butone of the Thracian cavalry, hurling himself on Dositheus, slashed his shoulder, and Gorgias escaped to Marisa.	35 Onde Dositeo, uomo forte, cavaliere di Bacenore, teneva Gorgia; e volendolo pigliarlo vivo, uno cavaliere de' Tracii corse sopra lui, e tagliolli la spalla; e così Gorgia fuggitte in Maresa.
36 Meanwhile, since Esdrias and his men had been fighting for a long time and were exhausted, Judascal ed on the Lord to show himself their ally and leader in battle.	36 Onde combattenti longamente quelli che erano con Esdrin (messe in fuga), Giuda invocò il Signore aiutore, e che egli fusse il guidatore dello esèrcito.
37 Then, chanting the battle cry and hymns at the top of his voice in his ancestral tongue, by a surpriseattack he routed Gorgias' troops.	37 Incominciando con patria voce, ed estollendo il grido con li inni (e lode), pose in fuga li cavalieri di Gorgia.
38 Judas then ral ied his army and moved on to the town of Adul am where, as it was the seventh day ofthe week, they purified themselves according to custom and kept the Sabbath.	38 Ma Giuda, raunato lo esercito, venne nella città di Odollam; ed essendovi sopravenuto il settimo dì, secondo la consuetudine (del) purificati, fecero il sabbato in quello medesimo luogo.
39 Next day, they came to find Judas (since the necessity was by now urgent) to have the bodies of thefal en taken up and laid to rest among their relatives in their ancestral tombs.	39 E nel seguente giorno venne Giuda con li suoi, per togliere le corpora di uccisi, e con loro parenti ponerli nelli sepolcri paterni.
40 But when they found on each of the dead men, under their tunics, objects dedicated to the idols ofJamnia, which the Law prohibits to Jews, it became clear to everyone that this was why these men had lost theirlives.	40 Di che ritrovorono sotto le vestimenta delli uccisi delle cose donate delli idoli, li quali erano stati appresso Iamnia, dalle quali inibisce la legge alli Giudei; adunque fu manifesto che loro erano periti per questa cagione.
41 Al then blessed the ways of the Lord, the upright judge who brings hidden things to light,	41 Onde tutti benedicettero il giusto giudicio del Signore, il quale fece le cose occulte essere manifeste.
42 and gave themselves to prayer, begging that the sin committed might be completely forgiven. Next,the valiant Judas urged the soldiers to keep themselves free from al sin, having seen with their own eyes theeffects of the sin of those who had fal en;	42 Ed etiam convertiti alle preci pregorono che fusse dimenticato il perpetrato delitto. Ma il fortissimo Giuda confortava il popolo a conservarsi senza peccato, vedendo con li occhi quelle cose che sono fatte per le peccata di quelli che sono periti.
43 after this he took a col ection from them individual y, amounting to nearly two thousand drachmas,and sent it to Jerusalem to have a sacrifice for sin offered, an action altogether fine and noble, prompted by hisbelief in the resurrection.	43 E fatta la ricolta di duodeci milia dramme d'argento, mandolle a Ierosolima a offerire il sacrificio per li peccati de' morti, pensando bene e religiosamente della ressurrezione.
44 For had he not expected the fallen to rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to prayfor the dead,	44 Imperò che se egli non sperasse resuscitare quelli ch' erano morti, apparerebbe superfluo e vano a pregare per li morti.
45 whereas if he had in view the splendid recompense reserved for those who make a pious end, thethought was holy and devout. Hence, he had this expiatory sacrifice offered for the dead, so that they might bereleased from their sin.	45 E conciosia ch' egli considerava come quelli che con pietà aveano ricevuta la dormizione, arebbeno l'ottima reposita grazia.
	46 Santo adunque e salutifero è il pensiero a pregare per li defunti, acciò siano assoluti da' loro peccati.
