1 About then, Mattathias son of John, son of Simeon, a priest of the line of Joarib, left Jerusalem andsettled in Modein.	1 (Allora) in quel tempo si levò suso Matatia (sacerdote) figliuolo di Giovanni, figliuolo di Simeone, sacerdote de' figliuoli di Ioarib di Ierusalem, e fermossi nel monte di Modin.
2 He had five sons, John known as Gaddi,	2 Egli avea V figliuoli; il primo avea nome Giovanni, il quale era chiamato Gaddis.
3 Simon cal ed Thassi,	3 Il secondo fu Simeone, chiamato Tasi.
4 Judas cal ed Maccabaeus,	4 Il terzo fu Giuda, chiamato Maccabeo.
5 Eleazar, cal ed Avaran, and Jonathan cal ed Apphus.	5 Il quarto fu Eleazaro, chiamato Abaron; il quinto fu Ionata, chiamato Appo.
6 When he saw the blasphemies being committed in Judah and Jerusalem,	6 Costoro vedevano i grandi mali che si facevano nel popolo de' Giudei e in Ierusalem (e nelli altri luoghi).
7 he said, 'Alas that I should have been born to witness the ruin of my people and the ruin of the HolyCity, and to sit by while she is delivered over to her enemies, and the sanctuary into the hand of foreigners.	7 Onde Matatia disse (loro): ohimè misero, per che ci nacqui io mai per vedere l'abbassamento del popolo mio, e quello della santa cittade, e veggo ch' ella è data in balìa de' nimici?
8 'Her Temple has become like someone of no repute,	8 E le sue cose [sante] sono concedute nelle mani delli stranieri; e lo suo tempio è fatto sì come l'uomo mercenaio.
9 the vessels that were her glory have been carried off as booty, her babies have been slaughtered inher streets, her young men by the enemy's sword.	9 E li vasi della sua gloria presi e tramutati sono; i suoi vecchi uomini sono (morti e) uccisi su per le piazze, e li suoi giovani sono abbattuti colle coltella de' suoi nimici.
10 Is there a nation that has not claimed a share of her royal prerogatives, that has not taken some of herspoils?	10 Qual gente è quella che non sia erede del suo regno, e che non abbia le sue ricchezze rubate?
11 Al her ornaments have been snatched from her, her former freedom has become slavery.	11 E tutto il suo ornamento gli è istato tolto. Ed ella era libera e franca, e sì è divenuta serva e ancilla.
12 See how the Holy Place, our beauty, our glory, is now laid waste, see how the gentiles have profanedit!	12 Ora adunque (da poi che) le nostre sante cose e la bellezza nostra e la nostra nobile nominanza è distrutta; e le genti l'hanno corrotta.
13 What have we left to live for?'	13 A che viviamo noi più?
14 Mattathias and his sons tore their garments, put on sackcloth, and observed deep mourning.	14 Allora Matatia e li suoi figliuoli stracciarono le loro vestimenta; e vestironsi di cilicio, e piansono amaramente.
15 The king's commissioners who were enforcing the apostasy came to the town of Modein for thesacrifices.	15 E intanto vi giunsono li ambasciatori del re Antioco, per costrignere coloro ch' erano fuggiti nella cittade di Modin a sacrificare (agl' idoli) e ad accendere incensi e a dipartirsi dalla legge di Dio.
16 Many Israelites gathered round them, but Mattathias and his sons drew apart.	16 Avvenne che veramente molti del popolo d' Israel consentendo se n' andarono a loro; ma Matatia e li suoi figliuoli costantemente istettono fermi.
17 The king's commissioners then addressed Mattathias as fol ows, 'You are a respected leader, a greatman in this town; you have sons and brothers to support you.	17 Onde messaggi e ambasciatori del re Antioco dissono a Matatia: tu se' principe, e molto nominato in questa cittade, e se' grande e ornato di figliuoli e di fratelli.
18 Be the first to step forward and conform to the king's decree, as all the nations have done, and theleaders of Judah and the survivors in Jerusalem; you and your sons shal be reckoned among the Friends of theKing, you and your sons wil be honoured with gold and silver and many presents.'	18 Adunque tra' ti inanzi, e tu primaio ubbidisci al comandamento del re Antioco, sì come hanno fatto tutte le genti, e gli uomini (del popolo) de' Giudei, e quegli che sono rimasi in Ierusalem; e tu e li tuoi figliuoli sarete delli amici dello re, e sarai adornato e accresciuto d' oro e d' ariento e di molti altri doni.
19 Raising his voice, Mattathias retorted, 'Even if every nation living in the king's dominions obeys him,each forsaking its ancestral religion to conform to his decrees,	19 Allora rispose Matatia, e disse in alta voce: certo, certo, se tutte le genti ubbidiscono allo re Antioco, e ciascuno si parte dalla ubbidienza della legge de' suoi padri, e consentono al comandamento del re,
20 I, my sons and my brothers will stil fol ow the covenant of our ancestors.	20 io pure ubbidirò, insieme colli miei figliuoli e fratelli, alla legge de' nostri padri.
21 May Heaven preserve us from forsaking the Law and its observances.	21 E Iddio ci sia in aiuto; però che a noi non. è utile di abbandonare la legge e le giustizie di Dio.
22 As for the king's orders, we will not fol ow them: we shal not swerve from our own religion either toright or to left.'	22 Noi non intenderemo alle parole del re Antioco, e non sacrificheremo, trapassando li comandamenti della nostra legge, per tenere altra via.
23 As he finished speaking, a Jew came forward in the sight of al to offer sacrifice on the altar in Modeinas the royal edict required.	23 E si tosto come egli fece fine alle sue parole, sì si trasse inanzi uno Giudeo; e dinanzi agli occhi di tutti coloro fece sacrificio alli idoli sopra l'altare della città di Modin, secondo il comandamento del re Antioco.
24 When Mattathias saw this, he was fired with zeal; stirred to the depth of his being, he gave vent to hislegitimate anger, threw himself on the man and slaughtered him on the altar.	24 E vidde questo Matatia, e sì se ne dolse, e aprionsi le sue reni, e accesesi il suo furore secondo il giudicio della legge; e insultando davanti, l'uccise sopra l'altare.
25 At the same time he killed the king's commissioner who was there to enforce the sacrifice, and toredown the altar.	25 Ancora uccise quello uomo il quale avea mandato il detto re a costrignere di sacrificare; e distrusse l'altare.
26 In his zeal for the Law he acted as Phinehas had against Zimri son of Salu.	26 E mostrò d'amare molto teneramente la legge di Dio, come per addietro fece Finees a Zamri figliuolo di Salomi.
27 Then Mattathias went through the town, shouting at the top of his voice, 'Let everyone who has anyzeal for the Law and takes his stand on the covenant come out and follow me.'	27 E gridòe ad alta voce Matatia nella cittade, e disse: chiunque ama la legge e mantiene il testamento, mi venga dietro.
28 Then he fled with his sons into the hills, leaving al their possessions behind in the town.	28 Allora si fuggì, egli e li suoi figliuoli, nelli monti; e abbandonarono ciò che loro aveano nella cittade.
29 Many people who were concerned for virtue and justice went down to the desert and stayed there,	29 Allora fu egli seguitato da molti, i quali andarono dopo lui nello deserto, desiderando di vivere secondo la giustizia e le ragioni della legge.
30 taking with them their sons, their wives and their cattle, so oppressive had their sufferings become.	30 E ivi stettono loro, e li loro figliuoli, e le loro donne, e le loro pecore; però che molti mali erano indurati sopra loro.
31 Word was brought to the royal officials and forces stationed in Jerusalem, in the City of David, thatthose who had repudiated the king's edict had gone down to the hiding places in the desert.	31 E annunziato fue agli uomini del re (Antioco), e allo esercito che era in Ierusalem, città di David, come alquanti uomini s' erano ricolti nel deserto, i quali aveano dispregiato li comandamenti del re, ed erano in luoghi celati, e molti gli aveano seguiti.
32 A strong detachment went after them, and when it came up with them ranged itself against them inbattle formation, preparing to attack them on the Sabbath day,	32 Dond' è che loro incontanente andarono loro addosso, e commisono battaglia incontro a loro il die del sabbato.
33 and said, 'Enough of this! Come out and do as the king orders and you will be spared.'	33 E dissono loro: dunque ancora vi ribellate? uscite fuori, e ubbidite al comandamento del re e viverete.
34 The others, however, replied, 'We refuse to come out, and we wil not obey the king's orders andprofane the Sabbath day.'	34 E quegli rispuosono: noi non usciremo fuori, e non ubbidiremo al comandamento del re, per corrompere il di del sabbato.
35 The royal forces at once went into action,	35 Allora commisono battaglia contro a loro.
36 but the others offered no opposition; not a stone was thrown, there was no barricading of the hidingplaces.	36 Ma loro non si difesono; ma una pietra solamente non gittarono contro a loro (e non chiusono la porta) e non armarono i celati luoghi,
37 They only said, 'Let us all die innocent; let heaven and earth bear witness that you are massacring uswith no pretence of justice.'	37 dicendo: moiamo nella nostra simplicitade; e siano nostri testimoni il cielo e la terra, che voi ingiustamente noi uccidete.
38 The attack was pressed home on the Sabbath itself, and they were slaughtered, with their wives andchildren and cattle, to the number of one thousand persons.	38 E così combatterono (quegli del re) contro a loro in sabbato; e furono morti loro e le loro donne. e li loro figliuoli e il loro bestiame (si se ne menarono); e morirono (delle genti di Giuda) nel torno di mille persone.
39 When the news reached Mattathias and his friends, they mourned them bitterly	39 E quando Matatia e gli altri suoi amici il seppono, molto se ne dolsono, e fècionne grande pianto.
40 and said to one another, 'If we al do as our brothers have done, and refuse to fight the gentiles for ourlives and institutions, they wil only destroy us the sooner from the earth.'	40 Allora costoro incominciarono a dire l' uno. all' altro: se noi faremo così come feciono li nostri fratelli, e non combatteremo contro a' nostri nemici per l'anime nostre e per le nostre ragioni, tostamente ci leveranno di terra.
41 So then and there they came to this decision, 'If anyone attacks us on the Sabbath day, whoever hemay be, we shall resist him; we must not al be kil ed, as our brothers were in the hiding places.'	41 E allora propuosono e fermarono in quel dì di combattere contro a chi venisse incontro a loro, e di non rifiutare la battaglia il dì del sabbato, dicendo: combattiamo, acciò che noi non moiamo tutti sì come feciono li nostri fratelli per li luoghi nascosi.
42 Soon they were joined by the Hasidaean party, stout fighting men of Israel, each one a volunteer onthe side of the Law.	42 Allora si radunarono con loro la sinagoga degli Assidei, uomini valenti e pieni di forza, e voluntarosi di mantenere la legge.
43 Al the refugees from the persecution ral ied to them, giving them added support.	43 E aggiunsono con loro tutti quelli che fuggivano li peccati; e fecionsi con loro più forti.
44 They organised themselves into an armed force, striking down the sinners in their anger, and therenegades in their fury, and those who escaped them fled to the gentiles for safety.	44 Loro radunarono oste, e percossono li peccatori nella ira, e li uomini malvagi nella loro indegnazione; e gli altri fuggirono alle nazioni per iscampare.
45 Mattathias and his friends made a tour, overthrowing the altars	45 E attorniò Matatia con li amici suoi (tutto il paese); e distrussono gli altari (de' pagani nella loro fortezza).
46 and forcibly circumcising al the boys they found uncircumcised in the territories of Israel.	46 Circoncisono tutti e' fanciulli non circoncisi, quanti ne trovarono nel popolo d' Israel.
47 They hunted down the upstarts and managed their campaign to good effect.	47 E perseguitarono i figliuoli della superbia; e fue vittoriosa l'opera nelle loro mani.
48 They wrested the Law out of the control of the gentiles and the kings and reduced the sinners toimpotence.	48 Ed estrassono la legge delle mani delle genti, e delle potenze delli regni, e non consentirono al peccato.
49 As the days of Mattathias were drawing to a close, he said to his sons, 'Arrogance and outrage arenow in the ascendant; it is a period of turmoil and bitter hatred.	49 E approssimandosi il dì della morte di Matatia, egli disse alli suoi figliuoli: ora è confortata la superbia (del re Antioco) e la guastagione (nostra per li nostri peccati) e il tempo della sovversione (del culto divino) e l'ira della indegnazione (di Dio).
50 This is the time, my children, for you to have a burning zeal for the Law and to give your lives for thecovenant of our ancestors.	50 E però, figliuoli miei, siate amatori della legge (di Dio), e ponete l' anime vostre per difensione del testamento de' padri.
51 Remember the deeds performed by our ancestors, each in his generation, and you wil win greathonour and everlasting renown.	51 E ricordatevi delle opere loro, le quali egli facevano nelle loro (etadi e) generazioni; e acquisterete gloria e fama perpetua.
52 Was not Abraham tested and found faithful, was that not considered as justifying him?	52 Or non fue trovato Abraam fedele nella tentazione, e riputato gli fu a giustizia?
53 Joseph in the time of his distress maintained the Law, and so became lord of Egypt.	53 E Iosef nel tempo della sua tribulazione guardò il comandamento (di Dio), e divenne signore di Egitto.
54 Phinehas, our father, in return for his burning zeal, received the covenant of everlasting priesthood.	54 Finees, nostro padre, mostrando tenero amore alla legge di Dio, ricevette testamento di sacerdozio eterno.
55 Joshua, for carrying out his task, became judge of Israel.	55 Isue, ubbidendo alla parola di Dio, divenne duca in Israel.
56 Caleb, for his testimony before the assembled people, received an inheritance in the land.	56 Caleb, testimoniando (la veritade) nella chiesa, ricevette ereditade.
57 David for his generous heart inherited the throne of an everlasting kingdom.	57 David nella sua misericordia acquistòe seggio di reame perpetuo.
58 Elijah for his consuming fervour for the Law was caught up to heaven itself.	58 Elia, amando fortemente il fervore della legge, fu ricevuto in cielo.
59 Hananiah, Azariah and Mishael, for their fidelity, were saved from the flame.	59 Anania, Azaria e Misael, credendo (fermamente), furono liberati della fiamma.
60 Daniel for his singleness of heart was rescued from the lion's jaws.	60 Daniel nella sua puritade fu liberato dalla bocca de' leoni.
61 Know then that, generation after generation, no one who hopes in him will be overcome.	61 E così pensate per generazioni e per etadi; chè chiunque spera in Dio non viene meno.
62 Do not fear the threats of the sinner, al his brave show must come to the dunghill and the worms.	62 E però non temete delle parole de' peccatori; perciò che la gloria loro è bruttura e vermini.
63 Exalted today, tomorrow he is nowhere to be found, for he has returned to the dust he came from andhis scheming is brought to nothing.	63 Oggi si insuperbisce il peccatore, e domani non si ritrova; imperciò che già è tornato in terra, e lo suo pensiero tornato è a niente.
64 My children, be resolute and courageous for the Law, for it wil bring you glory.	64 Voi adunque, figliuoli miei, confortatevi, e valentemente adoperate nella legge; imperò che (facendo quelle cose le quali vi sono comandate nella legge dal nostro Signore Iddio) in quella sarete gloriosi.
65 'Here is your brother Simeon, I know he is a man of sound judgement. Listen to him al your lives; lethim take your father's place.	65 E però ecco Simone, vostro fratello; imperò ch' io so ch' egli è uomo di consiglio, uditelo continuamente, ed egli vi fia padre.
66 Judas Maccabaeus, strong and brave from his youth, let him be your general and conduct the waragainst the gentiles.	66 Ma Giuda Maccabeo, uomo prode e forte insino dalla sua gioventù, sia principe (della vostra guerra e) della vostra cavalleria; ed egli faccia la battaglia del popolo.
67 The rest of you are to enrol in your ranks al those who keep the Law, and to assure the vengeance ofyour people.	67 E radunerete con voi tutti i seguitatori della legge; e fate vendetta del vostro popolo.
68 Pay back the gentiles to the ful , and hold fast to the ordinance of the Law.'	68 E rendete degno merito alle genti, e intendete ne' comandamenti della legge.
69 Then he blessed them and was joined to his ancestors.	69 E poi gli benedisse, e allora morì Matatia, e fue posto cogli altri suoi padri
70 He died in the year 146 and was buried in his ancestral tomb at Modein, and al Israel mourned himdeeply.	70 nel CXLVI anno (del regno de' Greci); e fue seppellito da' suoi figliuoli nella cittade di Modin nel sepolcro de' suoi padri; e tutta la gente d' Israel lo piansono con grandissimo lamento.
