1 The whole community of Israelites left the desert of Sin, travel ing by stages as Yahweh ordered. Theypitched camp at Rephidim where there was no water for the people to drink.	1 Poi tutta la moltitudine dei figli d'Israele parti dal deserto di Sin, e, marciando a tappe, secondo gli ordini del Signore, si accampò a Rafidim, dove non c'era acqua da bere per il popolo,
2 The people took issue with Moses for this and said, 'Give us water to drink.' Moses replied, 'Why takeissue with me? Why do you put Yahweh to the test?'	2 il quale mormorando contro Mosè, disse.« Dacci l'acqua per bere ». Ai quali Mosè rispose: « Perche ve la prendete con me? Perchè tentate il Signore? »
3 But tormented by thirst, the people complained to Moses. 'Why did you bring us out of Egypt,' theysaid, 'only to make us, our children and our livestock, die of thirst?'	3 Ma il popolo, siccome lì mancava l'acqua ed egli aveva sete, seguitò a mormorare contro Mosè, dicendo: « Perchè ci hai fatti uscire dall'Egitto, per farci morir di sete coi nostri figli e coi nostri bestiami? »
4 Moses appealed to Yahweh for help. 'How am I to deal with this people?' he said. 'Any moment nowthey will stone me!'	4 E Mosè gridò al Signore, dicendo: « Che devo fare a questo popolo? Tra poco mi lapiderà! »
5 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Go on ahead of the people, taking some of the elders of Israel with you;in your hand take the staff with which you struck the River, and go.	5 E il Signore disse a Mosè: « Passa davanti al popolo, e prendi teco degli anziani d'Israele, prendi in mano la verga con cui percuotesti il fiume, e parti.
6 I shal be waiting for you there on the rock (at Horeb). Strike the rock, and water wil come out for thepeople to drink.' This was what Moses did, with the elders of Israel looking on.	6 Ecco io starò là dinanzi a te sopra la roccia di Oreb: tu percuoterai la roccia, e ne uscirà l'acqua per dissetare il popolo ». Mosè fece così alla presenza degli anziani d'Israele.
7 He gave the place the names Massah and Meribah because of the Israelites' contentiousness andbecause they put Yahweh to the test by saying, 'Is Yahweh with us, or not?'	7 E chiamò quel luogo col nome di Tentazione, per via della mormorazione dei figli d'Israele, e perchè essi avevan tentato il Signore, dicendo: « È o non è il Signore con noi? »
8 The Amalekites then came and attacked Israel at Rephidim.	8 Or Amalec venne a combattere contro Israele a Rafidim.
9 Moses said to Joshua, 'Pick some men and tomorrow morning go out and engage Amalek. I, for mypart, shal take my stand on the hil top with the staff of God in my hand.'	9 E Mosè disse a Giosuè: « Fa scelta d'uomini, e va a combattere contro Amalec: domani io starò sul monte colla verga di Dio in mano ».
10 Joshua did as Moses had told him and went out to engage Amalek, while Moses, Aaron and Hurwent up to the top of the hil .	10 Giosuè fece come vi osé aveva ordinato, e combattè contro Amalec, mentre Mosè, Aronne ed Hur stavano sulla vetta del monte.
11 As long as Moses kept his arms raised, Israel had the advantage; when he let his arms fall, theadvantage went to Amalek.	11 E quando Mosè teneva in alto le mani, Israele vinceva; se invece le abbassava un poco, aveva il sopravvento Amalec.
12 But Moses' arms grew heavy, so they took a stone and put it under him and on this he sat, withAaron and Hur supporting his arms on each side. Thus his arms remained unwavering til sunset,	12 Ma siccome le braccia di Mosè s'erano stancate, presa una pietra, gliela misero sotto, e ce lo fecero sedere, e Aronne ed Hur, uno da una parte e uno dall'altra, gli sostenevan le braccia in modo che esse ressero fino al tramonto del sole.
13 and Joshua defeated Amalek, putting their people to the sword.	13 E così Giosuè mise in fuga Amalec e la sua gente, passandoli a fil di spada.
14 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Write this down in a book to commemorate it, and repeat it over toJoshua, for I shal blot out al memory of Amalek under heaven.'	14 E il Signore disse a Mosè: « Questo fatto, perchè sia ricordato, scrivilo nel libro, e dichiaralo bene a Giosuè che io cancellerò di sotto al cielo la memoria di Amalec.
15 Moses then built an altar and named it Yahweh-Nissi	15 Allora Mosè eres se un altare a cui pose nome: il Signore è il mio segno alzato, e disse:
16 meaning, 'Lay hold of Yahweh's banner! Yahweh wil be at war with Amalek generation aftergeneration.'	16 « La mano del soglio del Signore e la guerra del Signore saranno contro Amalec per tutte le generazioni ».
