1 In his old age Samuel appointed his sons judges over Israel.	1 Samuele, quando diventò vecchio, costituì i suoi figli giudici d'Israele.
2 His first-born was named Joel, his second son, Abijah; they judged at Beer-sheba.	2 Il primogenito si chiamava Ioèl, il secondo Abià; facevano da giudici a Bersabea.
3 His sons did not follow his example but sought illicit gain and accepted bribes, perverting justice.	3 Ma i suoi figli non camminavano sulle sue orme, deviavano dietro il lucro, accettavano doni e deformavano il giudizio.
4 Therefore all the elders of Israel came in a body to Samuel at Ramah	4 Allora si radunarono tutti gli anziani d'Israele, andarono da Samuele a Rama,
5 and said to him, "Now that you are old, and your sons do not follow your example, appoint a king over us, as other nations have, to judge us."	5 e gli dissero: "Ecco, tu ormai sei vecchio e i tuoi figli non camminano sulle tue orme. Ora stabilisci su di noi un re, che ci governi, come fanno gli altri popoli".
6 Samuel was displeased when they asked for a king to judge them. He prayed to the LORD, however,	6 Questa cosa dispiacque a Samuele, perché avevano detto: "Dacci un re che ci governi". Perciò Samuele implorò il Signore.
7 who said in answer: "Grant the people's every request. It is not you they reject, they are rejecting me as their king.	7 Il Signore rispose a Samuele: "Ascolta la voce del popolo in tutto quello che ti hanno detto, perché non hanno rigettato te, ma hanno rigettato me, perché non regni più su di essi.
8 As they have treated me constantly from the day I brought them up from Egypt to this day, deserting me and worshiping strange gods, so do they treat you too.	8 Secondo il comportamento costante che hanno tenuto dal giorno in cui io li trassi fuori dall'Egitto fino al giorno d'oggi abbandonando me per servire altri dèi, così agiscono nei tuoi confronti.
9 Now grant their request; but at the same time, warn them solemnly and inform them of the rights of the king who will rule them."	9 Ma ora ascolta la loro voce. Però fa' loro una dichiarazione e annunzia loro il diritto del re che regnerà su di essi".
10 Samuel delivered the message of the LORD in full to those who were asking him for a king.	10 Samuele riferì tutte le parole del Signore al popolo che gli aveva chiesto un re.
11 He told them: "The rights of the king who will rule you will be as follows: He will take your sons and assign them to his chariots and horses, and they will run before his chariot.	11 Disse: "Questo sarà il diritto del re che regnerà su di voi: si prenderà i vostri figli per preporli ai suoi carri e ai suoi cavalli, perché corrano davanti al suo cocchio;
12 He will also appoint from among them his commanders of groups of a thousand and of a hundred soldiers. He will set them to do his plowing and his harvesting, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots.	12 per costituirli capi di mille e capi di cinquanta, per arare la sua campagna, per mietere la sua messe, per fabbricare le sue armi da guerra e gli attrezzi dei suoi carri.
13 He will use your daughters as ointment-makers, as cooks, and as bakers.	13 Prenderà anche le vostre figlie come profumiere, cuoche e fornaie.
14 He will take the best of your fields, vineyards, and olive groves, and give them to his officials.	14 Prenderà pure i vostri campi, le vostre vigne e i vostri oliveti migliori e li darà ai suoi ministri;
15 He will tithe your crops and your vineyards, and give the revenue to his eunuchs and his slaves.	15 prenderà la decima parte delle vostre sementi e delle vostre vigne e le darà ai suoi eunuchi e ai suoi ministri.
16 He will take your male and female servants, as well as your best oxen and your asses, and use them to do his work.	16 Prenderà inoltre i vostri servi e le vostre serve, i vostri giovani migliori, così pure i vostri asini e li destinerà ai suoi lavori.
17 He will tithe your flocks and you yourselves will become his slaves.	17 Prenderà la decima parte delle vostre greggi e voi stessi diventerete suoi schiavi.
18 When this takes place, you will complain against the king whom you have chosen, but on that day the LORD will not answer you."	18 Voi manderete grida in quel giorno di fronte al vostro re che vi siete scelti, ma il Signore non vi risponderà".
19 The people, however, refused to listen to Samuel's warning and said, "Not so! There must be a king over us.	19 Il popolo non volle dare ascolto alla voce di Samuele e disse: "No! Ma un re sarà sopra di noi!
20 We too must be like other nations, with a king to rule us and to lead us in warfare and fight our battles."	20 Così saremo anche noi come tutte le nazioni: il nostro re ci governerà; uscirà alla nostra testa e combatterà le nostre battaglie".
21 When Samuel had listened to all the people had to say, he repeated it to the LORD,	21 Samuele ascoltò tutte le parole del popolo e le riferì al Signore.
22 who then said to him, "Grant their request and appoint a king to rule them." Samuel thereupon said to the men of Israel, "Each of you go to his own city."	22 Il Signore rispose a Samuele: "Ascolta la loro voce e fa' regnare un re su di loro". Allora Samuele disse agli uomini d'Israele: "Ognuno ritorni alla sua città!".
