1 For great are your judgments, and hardly to be described; therefore the unruly souls were wrong.	1 Grandi sono li giudicii tuoi, Signore, e le parole the sono inenarrabili; per questo le anime non addottrinate errarono.
2 For when the lawless thought to enslave the holy nation, shackled with darkness, fettered by the long night, they lay confined beneath their own roofs as exiles from the eternal providence.	2 Quando egli è mostrato per falsi argomenti alli iniqui, che possono signoreggiare la gente santa, poi legati con legami di tenebre, e rinchiusi sotto i tetti, i fuggitivi delle perpetuali providenze giacerono.
3 For they who supposed their secret sins were hid under the dark veil of oblivion Were scattered in fearful trembling, terrified by apparitions.	3 E mentre ch' elli si pensavano nascondere nelli oscuri peccati, sono dispersi per lo velamento della dimenticanza, spaventati orribilmente, e turbati con soperchia ammirazione.
4 For not even their inner chambers kept them fearless, for crashing sounds on all sides terrified them, and mute phantoms with somber looks appeared.	4 Nè la spelonca, nella quale elli erano, li conservava sanza paura; però che il suono che discendeva turbava coloro, e persone tristi, che apparivano a coloro, facevano loro paura.
5 No force, even of fire, was able to give light, nor did the flaming brilliance of the stars succeed in lighting up that gloomy night.	5 Il fuoco per nessuna potenza sua dare potea loro lume; nè le fiamme delle stelle potevano alluminare quella spaventevole notte.
6 But only intermittent, fearful fires flashed through upon them; And in their terror they thought beholding these was worse than the times when that sight was no longer to be seen.	6 Appariva loro uno subito fuoco, pieno di paura; e percossi per la paura, temeano più quelle cose che non vedeano, che quelle che vedevano.
7 And mockeries of the magic art were in readiness, and a jeering reproof of their vaunted shrewdness.	7 E li schernimenti dell' arte magica vi erano apposti; e lo castigamento della gloriosa sapienza era contumelia.
8 For they who undertook to banish fears and terrors from the sick soul themselves sickened with a ridiculous fear.	8 Però che coloro, li quali promettevano di scacciare le paure e le tribulazioni dell' anima languente, questi medesimi languivano con ischernimento, pieni di paura.
9 For even though no monstrous thing frightened them, they shook at the passing of insects and the hissing of reptiles,	9 Però che eziandio se nulla delle cose, che mostravano contra natura, perturbavano loro, nientemeno per li trapassamenti delli animali, e per lo soffio delli serpenti commossi, tremanti morivano; e diceano ch' elli non vedeano l' aere, il quale niuno puote schifare per alcuno modo.
10 And perished trembling, reluctant to face even the air that they could nowhere escape.	10 (Frequentemente le cose pessime, che debbono venire, spaventano li malvagi uomini, riprendendoli la coscienza per le loro cose malfatte). Conciosia cosa che la malvagità sia piena di paura, dà testimonianza della condannagione (di ciascuno); la crudele coscienza, turbata, sempre presume.
11 For wickedness, of its nature cowardly, testifies in its own condemnation, and because of a distressed conscience, always magnifies misfortunes.	11 La paura non è altro, se none (uno adiutorio di) presunzione di pensiere d'aiutorii.
12 For fear is nought but the surrender of the helps that come from reason;	12 E infino che dentro è il minore aspettamento, si computa maggiore potenza di quella cagione, della quale presta tormento.
13 and the more one's expectation is of itself uncertain, the more one makes of not knowing the cause that brings on torment.	13 E coloro li quali vennero dalli profondi e infimi lochi (sopravegnente), e dormendo sopravenente la impotente notte,
14 So they, during that night, powerless though it was, that had come upon them from the recesses of a powerless nether world, while all sleeping the same sleep,	14 alcuna volta erano battuti dalla paura della visione spaventevole, alcuna volta l'anime loro venivano meno per ismarrimento; però che la improvisa e insperata paura era sopravenuta loro.
15 Were partly smitten by fearsome apparitions and partly stricken by their souls' surrender; for fear came upon them, sudden and unexpected.	15 Appresso, se alcuno di quelli cadeva, era guardato in carcere, rinchiuso senza ferri.
16 Thus, then, whoever was there fell into that unbarred prison and was kept confined.	16 E se alcuno di villa o pastore o lavoratore di terra fosse preso, si sosteneano nella necessitade di non potere fuggire.
17 For whether one was a farmer, or a shepherd, or a worker at tasks in the wasteland, Taken unawares, he served out the inescapable sentence;	17 Tutti erano legati insieme d' una medesima catena di tenebre. O fosse spirito soffiante, o tra li spessi rami il suave suono delli uccelli, o vero di fiume molto corrente acqua,
18 for all were bound by the one bond of darkness. And were it only the whistling wind, or the melodious song of birds in the spreading branches, Or the steady sound of rushing water,	18 o fortissimo suono di rovinanti pietre, o corrimento invisibile di animali scherzanti, o fortissima voce di mugghianti bestie, o fusse resonante suono delli altissimi monti, facevano tramortire per paura coloro.
19 or the rude crash of overthrown rocks, Or the unseen gallop of bounding animals, or the roaring cry of the fiercest beasts, Or an echo resounding from the hollow of the hills, these sounds, inspiring terror, paralyzed them.	19 Tutto il mondo era illuminato di chiarissimo lume, e da non impedite opere era contenuto.
20 For the whole world shone with brilliant light and continued its works without interruption;	20 A coloro soli era posta la grave notte, imagine di tenebra che dovea venire sopra coloro. Elli medesimi erano adunque a sè gravi tenebre..
21 Over them alone was spread oppressive night, an image of the darkness that next should come upon them; yet they were to themselves more burdensome than the darkness.
