1 When Maccabeus and his companions, under the Lord's leadership, had recovered the temple and the city,	1 E Maccabeo, e quelli ch' erano con lui, aiutandogli il Signore, ricevette la città e il templo.
2 they destroyed the altars erected by the Gentiles in the marketplace and the sacred enclosures.	2 Ma li altari, li quali le genti forestiere aveano edificato per le piazze, e li templi degl' idoli destrussero.
3 After purifying the temple, they made a new altar. Then, with fire struck from flint, they offered sacrifice for the first time in two years, burned incense, and lighted lamps. They also set out the showbread.	3 E purgato il templo, fecero uno altro altare; e tratto il fuoco delle pietre da trar fuoco, offersero sacrificii dopo due anni; e posero lo incenso, le lucerne e li pani della proposizione.
4 When they had done this, they prostrated themselves and begged the Lord that they might never again fall into such misfortunes, and that if they should sin at any time, he might chastise them with moderation and not hand them over to blasphemous and barbarous Gentiles.	4 Le quali cose fatte, prostrati In terra pregavano Iddio, che non permettesse che cadessero più in così fatti mali; e s' egli accadesse che alcuna volta peccassero, che con più pietà li castigasse, e che non fussero dati nelle mani di uomini barbari e bestemmiatori.
5 On the anniversary of the day on which the temple had been profaned by the Gentiles, that is, the twenty-fifth of the same month Chislev, the purification of the temple took place.	5 E (accadette) in tal dì nel quale il templo fu corrutto e contaminato, in simil dì fu purgato; e fu questo a' XXV dì del mese di decembre.
6 The Jews celebrated joyfully for eight days as on the feast of Booths, remembering how, a little while before, they had spent the feast of Booths living like wild animals in caves on the mountains.	6 E con letizia e gaudio fecero festa otto giorni, secondo il modo (della festa) de' tabernaculi, arricordandosi che poco dinanzi aveano fatto la solennità. de' tabernaculi nelli monti e nelle spelonche, in modo di bestie.
7 Carrying rods entwined with leaves, green branches and palms, they sang hymns of grateful praise to him who had brought about the purification of his own Place.	7 Per la qual cagione portavano li tronchi e li rami verdi e le palme dinanzi a colui il qual prosperò di mondare il luogo suo.
8 By public edict and decree they prescribed that the whole Jewish nation should celebrate these days every year.	8 E deliberarono per comun comandamento e (universal) statuto alla gente de' Giudei, che (tutto il tempo) ogni anno fossero celebrati questi giorni.
9 Such was the end of Antiochus surnamed Epiphanes.	9 E lo eccesso della vita di Antioco, chiamato il Nobile, terminò a questo modo.
10 Now we shall relate what happened under Antiochus Eupator, the son of that godless man, and shall give a summary of the chief evils caused by the wars.	10 Ora veramente i fatti di Eupatore, figliuolo dello empio Antioco, narreremo, abbreviando li mali li quali furono fatti nelle battaglie.
11 When Eupator succeeded to the kingdom, he put a certain Lysias in charge of the government as commander-in-chief of Coelesyria and Phoenicia.	11 Essendo dunque Eupatore succeduto nel reame, ordinò sopra le faccende del regno uno chiamato Lisia, principe della gente d'arme di Fenice e di Siria.
12 Ptolemy, surnamed Macron, had taken the lead in treating the Jews fairly because of the previous injustice that had been done them, and he endeavored to have peaceful relations with them.	12 E instituì Tolomeo, il qual si chiamava il Magro, tenace del giusto sopra li Giudei, e massimamente per la iniquità la qual era stata fatta contra di loro, (e comandò) che si portasse con loro pacificamente.
13 As a result, he was accused before Eupator by the King's Friends. In fact, on all sides he heard himself called a traitor for having abandoned Cyprus, which Philometor had entrusted to him, and for having gone over to Antiochus Epiphanes. Since he could not command the respect due to his high office, he ended his life by taking poison.	13 Ma per questo accusato dagli inimici appresso Eupatore, avendo udito molte volte ch' elli era. traditore, però che essendoli dato Cipro in custodia da Filometore lui l'abbandonò, e menato al re Antioco (chiamato il) Nobile, anco da lui si parti, poi si morì di veneno.
14 When Gorgias became governor of the region, he employed foreign troops and used every opportunity to attack the Jews.	14 Ed essendo Gorgia duca di quelli luoghi, congregata la gente forestiera (che gli era dintorno), spesse volte rompea i Giudei.
15 At the same time the Idumeans, who held some important strongholds, were harassing the Jews; they welcomed fugitives from Jerusalem and endeavored to continue the war.	15 Ma li Giudei, che teneano le munizioni necessarie, ricevevano quelli ch' erano fuggiti di Ierusalem, e tentavano di far guerra.
16 Maccabeus and his companions, after public prayers asking God to be their ally, moved quickly against the strongholds of the Idumeans.	16 Ma quelli ch' erano con Maccabeo, pregando Iddio con orazione che li fusse propizio, fecero uno impeto contro alle munizioni degl' Idumei.
17 Attacking vigorously, they gained control of the places, drove back all who manned the walls, and cut down those who opposed them, killing as many as twenty thousand men.	17 E contrastando con una grande forza, ottennero i luoghi, e uccisero tutti quelli che li veniano incontro; e tutti insieme non furono meno, quelli che uccisero, di venticinque milia.
18 When at least nine thousand took refuge in two very strong towers, containing everything necessary to sustain a siege,	18 Ed essendo alcuni fuggiti in due torri fornite e bene armate, avendo ogni preparazione per combattere,
19 Maccabeus left Simon and Joseph, along with Zacchaeus and his men, in sufficient numbers to besiege them, while he himself went off to places where he was more urgently needed.	19 Maccabeo (si convertì) alla ioro espugnazione lasciando Simone e Iosefo e Zacheo, con coloro i quali erano con lui in assai buona quantità, lui si rivolse a quelle battaglie le quali più constrignea.
20 But some of the men in Simon's force who were money lovers let themselves be bribed by some of the men in the towers; on receiving seventy thousand drachmas, they allowed a number of them to escape.	20 Ma quelli i quali erano con Simone, accecati dalla loro cupidità (e avarizia) furono persuasi da alcunì ch' erano nelle torri, con promissione di danari; e avendo avuto settanta milia dramme, lasciorono fuggire alcuni.
21 When Maccabeus was told what had happened, he assembled the rulers of the people and accused those men of having sold their kinsmen for money by setting their enemies free to fight against them.	21 Ed essendo questo nunciato a Maccabeo congregati i principi del popolo, accusò che alcuni aveano venduto i fratelli, avendo lasciato li suoi avversarii.
22 So he put them to death as traitors, and without delay captured the two towers.	22 Questi adunque traditori, avendo fatto tal cosa, li uccisero; e sùbito prese due torri.
23 As he was successful at arms in all his undertakings, he destroyed more than twenty thousand men in the two strongholds.	23 E succedendo le cose prospere, così con l' arme come con le mani uccisero in queste due torri più di venti milia uomini.
24 Timothy, who had previously been defeated by the Jews, gathered a tremendous force of foreign troops and collected a large number of cavalry from Asia; then he appeared in Judea, ready to conquer it by force.	24 E Timoteo, il qual era stato prima superato dai Giudei, (chiamato e) radunato lo esèrcito delle genti forestiere, e congregato lo esèrcito di quelli da cavallo, se ne venne con Asinio per pigliare la Giudea con l' arme.
25 At his approach, Maccabeus and his men made supplication to God, sprinkling earth upon their heads and girding their loins in sackcloth.	25 (Avendo adunque udito questo,) Maccabeo e quelli ch' erano con lui, approssimandosi Timoteo, pregavano Iddio, gittandosi la terra sopra il capo, e cinti li cilicii alli lombi,
26 Lying prostrate at the foot of the altar, they begged him to be gracious to them, and to be an enemy to their enemies, and a foe to their foes, as the law declares.	26 prostrati alla sommità dell' altare (per lo circuito), acciò che li fusse propizio, e alli suoi nimici li fusse inimico, e fusse avversario alli suoi avversarii, sì come dice la legge.
27 After the prayer, they took up their arms and advanced a considerable distance from the city, halting when they were close to the enemy.	27 E fatto questo, dopo la orazione presono l' arme; e allontanandosi molto dalla città, e fatti prossimi alli inimici, si fermarono.
28 As soon as dawn broke, the armies joined battle, the one having as pledge of success and victory not only their valor but also their reliance on the Lord, and the other taking fury as their leader in the fight.	28 E nel primo levar del sole furono l' una parte contro all' altra a' fatti, avendo Maccabeo con li suoi Iddio con la sua virtù favorabile della prosperità della vittoria, e l'altra parte avendo confidenza e l'animo grande in lo principio della battaglia.
29 In the midst of the fierce battle, there appeared to the enemy from the heavens five majestic men riding on golden-bridled horses, who led the Jews on.	29 Ed essendo la battaglia molto grande, apparveno agli avversarii del cielo cinque uomini a cavallo, ornati con li freni d'oro, prestando favore al suo governo e alla sua defensione.
30 They surrounded Maccabeus, and shielding him with their own armor, kept him from being wounded. They shot arrows and hurled thunderbolts at the enemy, who were bewildered and blinded, thrown into confusion and routed.	30 Dei quali due, avendo Maccabeo in mezzo di sè, lo conservavano salvo (e immacolato), fornito con le sue armi; e contro agli avversarii saetta[vano] dardi e folgori, mediante i quali, confusi di cecità e repleti di perturbazione, cadeano a terra;
31 Twenty-five hundred of their foot soldiers and six hundred of their horsemen were slain.	31 intanto che ne furono morti venti milia e cinquecento, e cavalieri secento.
32 Timothy, however, fled to a well-fortified stronghold called Gazara, where Chaereas was in command.	32 Vedendo questo, Timoteo se ne fuggì in Gazara, la qual era (molto forte e) molto ben armata, la qual governava Cherea.
33 For four days Maccabeus and his men eagerly besieged the fortress.	33 E Maccabeo, e quelli ch' erano con lui, rallegrandosi (molto per la vittoria) assediorono la fortezza (dove Timoteo era fuggito) per quattro dì.
34 Those inside, relying on the strength of the place, kept repeating outrageous blasphemies and uttering abominable words.	34 Ma quelli ch' erano dentro, confidandosi per la fortezza del luogo, maledicevano sopra modo (quelli di fuori), e con parole sceleratissime si laudavano.
35 When the fifth day dawned, twenty young men in the army of Maccabeus, angered over such blasphemies, bravely stormed the wall and with savage fury cut down everyone they encountered.	35 E poi che si cominciò a chiarire il quinto dì, venti giovani di quelli ch' erano con Maccabeo erano accesi nell' animo per cagion delle blasfemie; e virilmente se n' andarono al muro, e accesi di animo feroce andando salivano.
36 Others who climbed up the same way swung around on the defenders, taking the besieged in the rear; they put the towers to the torch, spread the fire and burned the blasphemers alive. Still others broke down the gates and let in the rest of the troops, who took possession of the city.	36 E anco gli altri, similmente salendo suso le torri, andarono ad abbruciare le porte; e anco quelli che li maledissero, li arsero vivi.
37 Timothy had hidden in a cistern, but they killed him, along with his brother Chaereas, and Apollophanes.	37 Guastando adunque il luogo continuamente per due giorni, trovato Timoteo il qual s'era nascosto, lo uccisero; e anco uccisero il suo fratello Cherea e Apollofane.
38 On completing these exploits, they blessed, with hymns of grateful praise, the Lord who shows great kindness to Israel and grants them victory.	38 Le quali cose così terminate, benedice vano il Signore Iddio con inni (e cantici) e confessioni, il qual avea fatte cose così maraviglios? in Israel, e avevali dato vittoria.
