1 Ahithophel went on to say to Absalom: "Please let me choose twelve thousand men, and be off in pursuit of David tonight.	1 Disse Achitofel ad Assalom: io mi eleggerò duodeci milia uomini; e questa notte, levandomi, anderò dopo David.
2 If I come upon him when he is weary and discouraged, I shall cause him panic. When all the people with him flee, I shall strike down the king alone.	2 E però ch' egli è lasso, sùbito lo assalirò, e sciolte le mani lo percuoterò; e fuggendo tutto il popolo da lui, io ucciderò lui solo, così abbandonato.
3 Then I can bring back the rest of the people to you, as a bride returns to her husband. It is the death of only one man you are seeking; then all the people will be at peace."	3 E rimenerò tutto il popolo, come si suole menare uno uomo; e tutto il popolo rimanerà in pace.
4 This plan was agreeable to Absalom and to all the elders of Israel.	4 E piacque la sua parola ad Assalom e a tutti i maggiori d' Israel.
5 Then Absalom said, "Now call Hushai the Archite also; let us hear what he too has to say."	5 E disse Assalom: chiamate Cusai Arachito, e audiamo quello ch' egli dica esso.
6 When Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom said to him: "This is what Ahithophel proposed. Shall we follow his proposal? If not, speak up."	6 E venuto Cusai ad Assalom, disse a lui: così fatto consiglio ci ha dato Achitofel; tu che ne di': dobbianlo fare o no? che consiglio ci dài?
7 Hushai replied to Absalom, "This time Ahithophel has not given good counsel."	7 E Cusai disse ad Assalom: non è buono consiglio quello che ha dato Achitofel questa volta.
8 And he went on to say: "You know that your father and his men are warriors, and that they are as fierce as a bear in the wild robbed of her cubs. Moreover, since your father is skilled in warfare, he will not spend the night with the people.	8 E aggiunse Cusai: tu conosci il tuo padre e quelli uomini che sono con esso lui, i quali sono fortissimi e d' animo amaro, come l' orsa adirata nel deserto quando gli sono tolti i figliuoli; il padre tuo sì è uomo battagliere, e non istarà col popolo.
9 Even now he lies hidden in one of the caves or in some other place. And if some of our soldiers should fall at the first attack, whoever hears of it will say, 'Absalom's followers have been slaughtered.'	9 E forse che adesso è egli nascoso in una fossa, o in qualunque luogo si vuole; e se pur morrà uno de' nostri così nel principio, e' si dirà: grande piaga è fatta nel popolo il quale seguitava Assalom.
10 Then even the brave man with the heart of a lion will lose courage. For all Israel knows that your father is a warrior and that those who are with him are brave.	10 E il cuore di colui, che ora è quasi leone, isbigottirà; tutto Israel sa che il tuo padre è forte, e quelli che sono con esso lui essere robusti.
11 "This is what I counsel: Let all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba, who are as numerous as the sands by the sea, be called up for combat; and go with them yourself.	11 Ma questo mi pare diritto consiglio: fa congregare a te tutto Israel, da Dan insino a Bersebee, quasi come la terra del mare; e tu sarai in mezzo di loro.
12 We can then attack him wherever we find him, settling down upon him as dew alights on the ground. None shall survive--neither he nor any of his followers.	12 E saremogli sùbito sopra in qualunque luogo sarà; e copriremlo, come la terra suole fare la rugiada; e degli uomini che sono anco con esso lui, non lasceremo pure uno.
13 And if he retires into a city, all Israel shall bring ropes to that city and we can drag it into the gorge, so that not even a pebble of it can be found."	13 E s' egli è entrato in alcuna città, tutto Israel la circonderà pur con funi; e trarremola nel fiume, sì che non si trovi di lei pure una piastra d' uscio.
14 Then Absalom and all the Israelites pronounced the counsel of Hushai the Archite better than that of Ahithophel. For the LORD had decided to undo Ahithophel's good counsel, in order thus to bring Absalom to ruin.	14 E disse Assalom, e tutti gli uomini d' Israel: il consiglio di Cusai sì è migliore che quello di Achitofel. E secondo la volontà di Dio, il consiglio di Achitofel utile fue dissipato, (apparendo buono in cospetto di Assalom il consiglio di Cusai) per ducere Iddio male sopra Assalom.
15 Then Hushai said to the priests Zadok and Abiathar: "This is the counsel Ahithophel gave Absalom and the elders of Israel, and this is what I counseled.	15 E Cusai disse a Sadoc e Abiatar sacerdoti: in cotale e in cotale modo ha dato consiglio Achitofel ad Assalom e agli antichi d'Israel, e io ho dato tale e tale consiglio.
16 So send a warning to David immediately, not to spend the night at the fords near the desert, but to cross over without fail. Otherwise the king and all the people with him will be destroyed."	16 Ora mandate tosto a David, e significategli dicendo: non istare ista notte ne' campestri del deserto, ma senza dimoranza passa via, acciò che non sia tranghiottito il re, e tutti quelli che sono con esso lui.
17 Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying at En-rogel, since they could not risk being seen entering the city. A maidservant was to come with information for them, and they in turn were to go and report to King David.	17 E Ionata e Achimaas stavano presso alla fonte di Rogel; e andò una fante e significogliele; e loro se n'andarono per significarlo a David, però che non poteano vedere nè entrare nella città.
18 But an attendant saw them and informed Absalom. They sped on their way and reached the house of a man in Bahurim who had a cistern in his courtyard. They let themselves down into this,	18 E uno servo gli vidde, e significollo ad Assalom; e loro molto ratto entrarono in casa (di Baurim, cioè) d' uno di Baurim, il quale avea pozzo in casa sua, ed entrarono in esso.
19 and the housewife took the cover and spread it over the cistern, strewing ground grain on the cover so that nothing could be noticed.	19 E una femina tolse uno panno, e isparselo sopra il pozzo, sì quasi come seccasse orzo mondo; e in questo modo la cosa fue occulta.
20 When Absalom's servants came to the woman at the house, they asked, "Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?" The woman replied, "They went by a short while ago toward the water." They searched, but found no one, and so returned to Jerusalem.	20 E venuta la famiglia di Assalom in casa, dissero a quella femina: dove sono Achimaas e Gionata? E la femina respuose: sono stati, e passarono ratti, assaggiato uno poco d'acqua. E quelli che cercavano, non trovandolo, ritornorono in Ierusalem.
21 As soon as they left, Ahimaaz and Jonathan came up out of the cistern and went on to inform King David. They said to him: "Leave! Cross the water at once, for Ahithophel has given the following counsel in regard to you."	21 E partiti loro, quelli ch' erano nel pozzo uscirono fuori, e annunziarono a David, e dissero: istate suso, e passate mo' ratti il fiume; però che cotale consiglio ha dato contro a voi Achitofel.
22 So David and all his people moved on and crossed the Jordan. By daybreak, there was no one left who had not crossed.	22 E levossi David, e tutto il popolo ch' era con lui, e passò il Giordano, tanto che fece il dì (prima che si sapesse il fatto); e solo uno non rimase, il quale non passasse il fiume.
23 When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not acted upon, he saddled his ass and departed, going to his home in his own city. Then, having left orders concerning his family, he hanged himself. And so he died and was buried in his father's tomb.	23 E Achitofel, veggendo che non era fatto il consiglio suo, levossi e sellò l'asino suo, e andossene alla sua casa nella sua citta; e ordinato ch' ebbe la casa sua, impiccossi, e così morìo; e fue sepolto nel sepolcro del suo padre.
24 Now David had gone to Mahanaim when Absalom crossed the Jordan accompanied by all the Israelites.	24 E David se ne venne al campo, e Assalom passò il Giordano, ello e tutti gli uomini d'Israel con esso lui.
25 Absalom had put Amasa in command of the army in Joab's place. Amasa was the son of an Ishmaelite named Ithra, who had married Abigail, daughter of Jesse and sister of Joab's mother Zeruiah.	25 E fece Assalom, in iscambio di Ioab, sopra lo esercito Amasa, figliuolo d'uno uomo il quale avea nome letra di Iesraele, il quale entrò ad Abigail figliuola di Naas, suora di Sarvia, madre di Ioab.
26 Israel and Absalom encamped in the territory of Gilead.	26 E puose campo Israel con esso Assalom nella terra di Galaad.
27 When David came to Mahanaim, Shobi, son of Nahash from Rabbah of the Ammonites, Machir, son of Ammiel from Lodebar, and Barzillai, the Gileadite from Rogelim,	27 Ed essendo David venuto a campo, Sobi figliuolo di Naas di Rabbat de' figliuoli di Ammon, e Machir figliuolo di Ammiel di Lodabar, e Berzellai di Galaad di Rogelim,
28 brought couches, coverlets, basins and earthenware, as well as wheat, barley, flour, roasted grain, beans, lentils,	28 gli diedero letti e tappeti e vasi di terra, grano, orzo e farina, polenta, fave e lenti, e ceci fritti,
29 honey, butter and cheese from the flocks and herds, for David and those who were with him to eat; for they said, "The people have been hungry and tired and thirsty in the desert."	29 miele e butirro, pecore e grassi vitelli; a David, e al popolo ch' era con lui, diedero a mangiare; però che pensarono che il popolo fosse faticato di fame e di sete nel deserto.
