Genesis 19

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 The two angels reached Sodom in the evening, as Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he got up to greet them; and bowing down with his face to the ground,	1 Quand les deux Anges arrivèrent à Sodome sur le soir, Lot était assis à la porte de la ville. Dès queLot les vit, il se leva à leur rencontre et se prosterna, face contre terre.
2 he said, "Please, gentlemen, come aside into your servant's house for the night, and bathe your feet; you can get up early to continue your journey." But they replied, "No, we shall pass the night in the town square."	2 Il dit: "Je vous en prie, Messeigneurs! Veuillez descendre chez votre serviteur pour y passer la nuitet vous laver les pieds, puis au matin vous reprendrez votre route", mais ils répondirent: "Non, nous passerons lanuit sur la place."
3 He urged them so strongly, however, that they turned aside to his place and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking cakes without leaven, and they dined.	3 Il les pressa tant qu'ils allèrent chez lui et entrèrent dans sa maison. Il leur prépara un repas, fitcuire des pains sans levain, et ils mangèrent.
4 Before they went to bed, all the townsmen of Sodom, both young and old--all the people to the last man--closed in on the house.	4 Ils n'étaient pas encore couchés que la maison fut cernée parles hommes de la ville, les gens deSodome, depuis les jeunes jusqu'aux vieux, tout le peuple sans exception.
5 They called to Lot and said to him, "Where are the men who came to your house tonight? Bring them out to us that we may have intimacies with them."	5 Ils appelèrent Lot et lui dirent: "Où sont les hommes qui sont venus chez toi cette nuit? Amène-lesnous pour que nous en abusions."
6 Lot went out to meet them at the entrance. When he had shut the door behind him,	6 Lot sortit vers eux à l'entrée et, ayant fermé la porte derrière lui,
7 he said, "I beg you, my brothers, not to do this wicked thing.	7 il dit: "Je vous en supplie, mes frères, ne commettez pas le mal!
8 I have two daughters who have never had intercourse with men. Let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you please. But don't do anything to these men, for you know they have come under the shelter of my roof."	8 Ecoutez: j'ai deux filles qui sont encore vierges, je vais vous les amener: faites-leur ce qui voussemble bon, mais, pour ces hommes, ne leur faites rien, puisqu'ils sont entrés sous l'ombre de mon toit."
9 They replied, "Stand back! This fellow," they sneered, "came here as an immigrant, and now he dares to give orders! We'll treat you worse than them!" With that, they pressed hard against Lot, moving in closer to break down the door.	9 Mais ils répondirent: "Ote-toi de là! En voilà un qui est venu en étranger, et il fait le juge! Eh bien,nous te ferons plus de mal qu'à eux!" Ils le pressèrent fort, lui Lot, et s'approchèrent pour briser la porte.
10 But his guests put out their hands, pulled Lot inside with them, and closed the door;	10 Mais les hommes sortirent le bras, firent rentrer Lot auprès d'eux dans la maison et refermèrent laporte.
11 at the same time they struck the men at the entrance of the house, one and all, with such a blinding light that they were utterly unable to reach the doorway.	11 Quant aux hommes qui étaient à l'entrée de la maison, ils les frappèrent de berlue, du plus petitjusqu'au plus grand, et ils n'arrivaient pas à trouver l'ouverture.
12 Then the angels said to Lot: "Who else belongs to you here? Your sons (sons-in-law) and your daughters and all who belong to you in the city--take them away from it!	12 Les hommes dirent à Lot: "As-tu encore quelqu'un ici? Tes fils, tes filles, tous les tiens qui sontdans la ville, fais-les sortir de ce lieu.
13 We are about to destroy this place, for the outcry reaching the LORD against those in the city is so great that he has sent us to destroy it."	13 Nous allons en effet détruire ce lieu, car grand est le cri qui s'est élevé contre eux à la face deYahvé, et Yahvé nous a envoyés pour les exterminer."
14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had contracted marriage with his daughters. "Get up and leave this place," he told them; "the LORD is about to destroy the city." But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.	14 Lot alla parler à ses futurs gendres, qui devaient épouser ses filles: "Debout, dit-il, quittez ce lieu,car Yahvé va détruire la ville." Mais ses futurs gendres crurent qu'il plaisantait.
15 As dawn was breaking, the angels urged Lot on, saying, "On your way! Take with you your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city."	15 Lorsque pointa l'aurore, les Anges insistèrent auprès de Lot, en disant: "Debout! prends ta femmeet tes deux filles qui se trouvent là, de peur d'être emporté par le châtiment de la ville."
16 When he hesitated, the men, by the LORD'S mercy, seized his hand and the hands of his wife and his two daughters and led them to safety outside the city.	16 Et comme il hésitait, les hommes le prirent par la main, ainsi que sa femme et ses deux filles, pourla pitié que Yahvé avait de lui. Ils le firent sortir et le laissèrent en dehors de la ville.
17 As soon as they had been brought outside, he was told: "Flee for your life! Don't look back or stop anywhere on the Plain. Get off to the hills at once, or you will be swept away."	17 Comme ils le menaient dehors, il dit: "Sauve-toi, sur ta vie! Ne regarde pas derrière toi et net'arrête nulle part dans la Plaine, sauve-toi à la montagne, pour n'être pas emporté!"
18 "Oh, no, my lord!" replied Lot.	18 Lot leur répondit: "Non, je t'en prie, Monseigneur!
19 "You have already thought enough of your servant to do me the great kindness of intervening to save my life. But I cannot flee to the hills to keep the disaster from overtaking me, and so I shall die.	19 Ton serviteur a trouvé grâce à tes yeux et tu as montré unegrande miséricorde à mon égard enm'assurant la vie. Mais moi, je ne puis pas me sauver à la montagne sans que m'atteigne le malheur et que jemeure.
20 Look, this town ahead is near enough to escape to. It's only a small place. Let me flee there--it's a small place, isn't it?--that my life may be saved."	20 Voilà cette ville, assez proche pour y fuir, et elle est peu de chose. Permets que je m'y sauve --est-ce qu'elle n'est pas peu de chose? -- et que je vive!"
21 "Well, then," he replied, "I will also grant you the favor you now ask. I will not overthrow the town you speak of.	21 Il lui répondit: "Je te fais encore cette grâce de ne pas renverser la ville dont tu parles.
22 Hurry, escape there! I cannot do anything until you arrive there." That is why the town is called Zoar.	22 Vite, sauve-toi là-bas, car je ne puis rien faire avant que tu n'y sois arrivé." C'est pourquoi on adonné à la ville le nom de Coar.
23 The sun was just rising over the earth as Lot arrived in Zoar;	23 Au moment où le soleil se levait sur la terre et que Lot entrait à Coar,
24 at the same time the LORD rained down sulphurous fire upon Sodom and Gomorrah (from the LORD out of heaven).	24 Yahvé fit pleuvoir sur Sodome et sur Gomorrhe du soufre et du feu venant de Yahvé,
25 He overthrew those cities and the whole Plain, together with the inhabitants of the cities and the produce of the soil.	25 et il renversa ces villes et toute la Plaine, avec tous les habitants des villes et la végétation du sol.
26 But Lot's wife looked back, and she was turned into a pillar of salt.	26 Or la femme de Lot regarda en arrière, et elle devint une colonne de sel.
27 Early the next morning Abraham went to the place where he had stood in the LORD'S presence.	27 Levé de bon matin, Abraham vint à l'endroit où il s'était tenu devant Yahvé
28 As he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and the whole region of the Plain, he saw dense smoke over the land rising like fumes from a furnace.	28 et il jeta son regard sur Sodome, sur Gomorrhe et sur toute la Plaine, et voici qu'il vit la fuméemonter du pays comme la fumée d'une fournaise!
29 Thus it came to pass: when God destroyed the Cities of the Plain, he was mindful of Abraham by sending Lot away from the upheaval by which God overthrew the cities where Lot had been living.	29 Ainsi, lorsque Dieu détruisit les villes de la Plaine, il s'est souvenu d'Abraham et il a retiré Lot dumilieu de la catastrophe, dans le renversement des villes où habitait Lot.
30 Since Lot was afraid to stay in Zoar, he and his two daughters went up from Zoar and settled in the hill country, where he lived with his two daughters in a cave.	30 Lot monta de Coar et s'établit dans la montagne avec ses deux filles, car il n'osa pas rester à Coar.Il s'installa dans une grotte, lui et ses deux filles.
31 The older one said to the younger: "Our father is getting old, and there is not a man on earth to unite with us as was the custom everywhere.	31 L'aînée dit à la cadette: "Notre père est âgé et il n'y a pas d'homme dans le pays pour s'unir à nousà la manière de tout le monde.
32 Come, let us ply our father with wine and then lie with him, that we may have offspring by our father."	32 Viens, faisons boire du vin à notre père et couchons avec lui; ainsi, de notre père, nous susciteronsune descendance."
33 So that night they plied their father with wine, and the older one went in and lay with her father; but he was not aware of her lying down or her getting up.	33 Elles firent boire, cette nuit-là, du vin à leur père, et l'aînée vint s'étendre près de son père, quin'eut conscience ni de son coucher ni de son lever.
34 Next day the older one said to the younger: "Last night it was I who lay with my father. Let us ply him with wine again tonight, and then you go in and lie with him, that we may both have offspring by our father."	34 Le lendemain, l'aînée dit à la cadette: "La nuit dernière, j'ai couché avec mon père; faisons-luiboire du vin encore cette nuit et va coucher avec lui; ainsi, de notre père nous susciterons une descendance."
35 So that night, too, they plied their father with wine, and then the younger one went in and lay with him; but again he was not aware of her lying down or her getting up.	35 Elles firent boire du vin à leur père encore cette nuit-là, et la cadette s'étendit auprès de lui, quin'eut conscience ni de son coucher ni de son lever.
36 Thus both of Lot's daughters became pregnant by their father.	36 Les deux filles de Lot devinrent enceintes de leur père.
37 The older one gave birth to a son whom she named Moab, saying, "From my father." He is the ancestor of the Moabites of today.	37 L'aînée donna naissance à un fils et elle l'appela Moab; c'est l'ancêtre des Moabites d'aujourd'hui.
38 The younger one, too, gave birth to a son, and she named him Ammon, saying, "The son of my kin." He is the ancestor of the Ammonites of today.	38 La cadette aussi donna naissance à un fils et elle l'appela Ben-Ammi; c'est l'ancêtre des Bené-Ammon d'aujourd'hui.
