1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.	1 Guardate quale attestato di amore ci ha dato il Padre nel farci chiamare ad essere figlioli di Dio. Per questo il mondo non conosce noi; perchè non conosce lui.
2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.	2 Carissimi, ora noi siamo figli di Dio; ma non s'è manifestato ancora quel che saremo. Sappiamo che, quando si manifesterà saremo simili a lui, perchè lo vedremo quale egli è.
3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.	3 E chiunque ha questa speranza in lui, si santifica, come anche lui è santo.
4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.	4 Chiunque fa peccato commette iniquità, e il peccato è iniquità.
5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.	5 Or sapete che Gesù è apparso per togliere i nostri peccati e che non v'è peccato in lui.
6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.	6 Chiunque dimora in lui non pecca, e chi pecca non l'ha nè visto, nè conosciuto.
7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.	7 Figliolini, nessuno vi seduca: chi pratica la giustizia è giusto, come Cristo è giusto;
8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.	8 ma chi fa il peccato, egli è dal diavolo perchè il diavolo pecca fin da principio. Il Figlio di Dio è apparso appunto per distruggere le opere del diavolo.
9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.	9 Chiunque è nato da Dio non commette il peccato, perchè tiene in sè il germe vitale di Dio, e non può peccare, perchè è nato da Dio.
10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.	10 In questo si distinguono i figlioli di Dio e i figlioli del diavolo: chiunque non pratica la giustizia non è da Dio, così pure chi non ama il proprio fratello.
11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.	11 E il messaggio che voi avete sentito fin da principio è questo: che vi amiate l'un l'altro;
12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.	12 non facendo come Caino, che era dal maligno ed uccise il suo fratello. E perchè lo uccise? Perchè le sue opere eran malvage e quelle del suo fratello eran giuste.
13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.	13 Non vi stupite, fratelli, se il mondo vi odia.
14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.	14 Noi sappiamo d'essere stati trasportati dalla morte alla vita, perchè amiamo i fratelli. Chi non ama resta nella morte.
15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.	15 Chiunque odia il proprio fratello è omicida; e voi sapete che nessuno omicida ha dimorante in se stesso la vita eterna.
16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.	16 Da questo abbiamo conosciuto la carità di Dio: dall'avere egli data la sua vita per noi; ed anche noi dobbiamo dare la vita per i fratelli.
17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?	17 Se uno avrà dei beni di questo mondo e, vedendo il suo fratello nel bisogno, gli chiuderà il proprio cuore, come potrebbe la carità di Dio abitare in lui?
18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.	18 Figliolini miei, non amiamo a parole e colla lingua, ma colle opere e in verità.
19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.	19 Da questo conosciamo di essere dalla verità e potremo rassicurare i nostri cuori dinanzi a Dio,
20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.	20 perchè se il nostro cuore ci condanna, Dio è maggiore del nostro cuore e sa tutto;
21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.	21 se poi il nostro cuore non ci condanna, carissimi, possiamo aver fiducia dinanzi a Dio,
22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.	22 e riceveremo da lui tutto ciò che domandiamo, perchè osserviamo i suoi comandamenti e facciamo le cose che gli son gradite.
23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.	23 Or questo è il suo comandamento: che crediamo nel nome del suo Figliolo Gesù Cristo, e ci amiamo l'un l'altro, come egli ci ha comandato.
24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.	24 E chi osserva i suoi comandamenti sta in Dio e Dio in lui, e che egli sta in noi lo sappiamo dallo Spirito che Egli ci ha dato.
