1 And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there.	1 Giosuè, figlio di Nun, da Setim mandò segretamente due esploratori, dicendo loro: « Andate a esplorare il paese e la città di Gerico ». Ed essi, andati, entrarono in casa d'una donna di mala vita, chiamata Rahab, e vi riposarono.
2 And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to night of the children of Israel to search out the country.	2 E la nuova fu recata al re di Gerico, al quale fu detto: « Guarda, degli uomini dei figli d'Israele son entrati qua di notte per esplorare il paese ».
3 And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, which are entered into thine house: for they be come to search out all the country.	3 Allora il re di Gerico mandò a dire a Rahab: « Fa uscir fuori gli uomini che son venuti da te e son entrati in casa tua, perchè sono spioni venuti ad esplorare tutto il paese ».
4 And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I wist not whence they were:	4 Ma la donna, dopo aver presi e nascosti quegli uomini, disse: « È vero, da me son venuti, ma non sapevo donde fossero,
5 And it came to pass about the time of shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out: whither the men went I wot not: pursue after them quickly; for ye shall overtake them.	5 e poi al chiudersi della porta, sul far della notte sono usciti, e non so dove siano andati: inseguiteli subito, che li raggiungerete ».
6 But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.	6 Essa poi fece salire quegli uomini sulla terrazza della sua casa e li nascose sotto la stoppia di lino che vi si trovava.
7 And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.	7 Or quelli che erano stati mandati l'inseguirono per la strada che mena al guado del Giordano, e appena furono usciti, la porta fu chiusa.
8 And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof;	8 Quelli ch'eran nascosti non dormivano ancora, quando la donna salì da loro e disse:
9 And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.	9 « So bene che il Signore vi ha dato il paese: il terrore di voi è già caduto sopra di noi, e tutti gli abitanti del paese sono abbattuti.
10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.	10 Abbiamo udito che il Signore seccò le acque de Mar Rosso, quando vi entraste per uscire dall'Egitto, e come avete trattato i due re degli Amorrei, che eran di là dal Giordano, Sehon ed Og, che voi metteste a morte.
11 And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.	11 Nel sentire queste cose, ci siam perduti di coraggio al vostro arrivo, sapendo che il Signore Dio vostro è Dio lassù in cielo e quaggiù in terra.
12 Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father's house, and give me a true token:	12 Or dunque giuratemi pel Signore d'usar misericordia colla casa di mio padre, come io l'ho usata con voi, e datemi un segno sicuro
13 And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.	13 che risparmierete mio padre e mia madre, i miei fratelli e le mie sorelle, e tutto ciò che loro appartiene, e libererete le nostre anime dalla morte ».
14 And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.	14 Ed essi le risposero: « Che moriamo noi per voi, se però non ci tradisci: quando il Signore ci avrà dato il paese, useremo verso di te misericordia e fedeltà ».
15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.	15 Allora essa li calò con una fune giù dalla finestra, chè la sua casa era attaccata alle mura;
16 And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way.	16 e disse loro: « Andate verso il monte, per non essere in contrati da essi quando ritorneranno, e state lassù nascosti per tre giorni, finché non sian tornati, e poi andrete per la vostra strada ».
17 And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear.	17 Ed essi a lei: « Non mancheremo a questo giuramento che ci hai fatto fare,
18 Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father's household, home unto thee.	18 se, quando entreremo nel paese, ti farai riconoscere con questa cordicella di color scarlatto, legandola aila finestra dalla quale ci hai calati, e se raduni in casa tua tuo padre, tua madre, i tuoi fratelli e tutta la tua parentela.
19 And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.	19 Se alcuno uscirà dalla porta della tua casa, il sangue di lui sarà sopra la sua testa e non ci avremo colpa noi; ma il sangue di tutti quelli che saranno in casa tua cadrà sopra il nostro capo, se alcuno li toccherà.
20 And if thou utter this our business, then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.	20 Se poi per tra dirci tu divulgassi quello che diciamo, noi saremo sciolti dal giuramento che ci hai fatto fare ».
21 And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.	21 Essa rispose: « Sia fatto come avete detto »; e dopo averli licenziati affinchè se ne andassero, legò la cordicella di color scarlatto alla finestra.
22 And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.	22 Ed essi andarono al monte e vi stettero tre giorni, finché non fossero tornati quelli che li avevano inseguiti, e che non li trovarono, sebbene li avessero cercati per ogni via.
23 So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that befell them:	23 Tornati questi in città, gli esploratori scesero dal monte, e, passato il Giordano, tornarono da Giosuè, figlio di Nun, a cui raccontarono quanto era loro accaduto,
24 And they said unto Joshua, Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us.	24 e dissero: « Il Signore ha dato nelle nostre mani tutto quel paese, e tutti i suoi abitanti sono abbattuti dallo spavento ».
