KING JAMES BIBLENEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.1 He summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases,
And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.2 and he sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal (the sick).
And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.3 He said to them, "Take nothing for the journey, neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money, and let no one take a second tunic.
And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.4 Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there.
And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.5 And as for those who do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them."
And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.6 Then they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the good news and curing diseases everywhere.
Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;7 Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was greatly perplexed because some were saying, "John has been raised from the dead";
And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.8 others were saying, "Elijah has appeared"; still others, "One of the ancient prophets has arisen."
And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.9 But Herod said, "John I beheaded. Who then is this about whom I hear such things?" And he kept trying to see him.
And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.10 When the apostles returned, they explained to him what they had done. He took them and withdrew in private to a town called Bethsaida.
And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.11 The crowds, meanwhile, learned of this and followed him. He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and he healed those who needed to be cured.
And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.12 As the day was drawing to a close, the Twelve approached him and said, "Dismiss the crowd so that they can go to the surrounding villages and farms and find lodging and provisions; for we are in a deserted place here."
But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.13 He said to them, "Give them some food yourselves." They replied, "Five loaves and two fish are all we have, unless we ourselves go and buy food for all these people."
For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.14 Now the men there numbered about five thousand. Then he said to his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of (about) fifty."
And they did so, and made them all sit down.15 They did so and made them all sit down.
Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.16 Then taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing over them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd.
And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.17 They all ate and were satisfied. And when the leftover fragments were picked up, they filled twelve wicker baskets.
And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?18 Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say that I am?"
They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.19 They said in reply, "John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, 'One of the ancient prophets has arisen.'"
He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.20 Then he said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter said in reply, "The Messiah of God."
And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;21 He rebuked them and directed them not to tell this to anyone.
Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.22 He said, "The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised."
And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.23 Then he said to all, "If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.24 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.
For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?25 What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself?
For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.26 Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.27 Truly I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God."
And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.28 About eight days after he said this, he took Peter, John, and James and went up the mountain to pray.
And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.29 While he was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white.
And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:30 And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah,
Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem.
But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.32 Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.
And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.33 As they were about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good that we are here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." But he did not know what he was saying.
While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.34 While he was still speaking, a cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud.
And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.35 Then from the cloud came a voice that said, "This is my chosen Son; listen to him."
And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.36 After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. They fell silent and did not at that time tell anyone what they had seen.
And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.37 On the next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him.
And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.38 There was a man in the crowd who cried out, "Teacher, I beg you, look at my son; he is my only child.
And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him.39 For a spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams and it convulses him until he foams at the mouth; it releases him only with difficulty, wearing him out.
And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.40 I begged your disciples to cast it out but they could not."
And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.41 Jesus said in reply, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be with you and endure you? Bring your son here."
And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.42 As he was coming forward, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion; but Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and returned him to his father.
And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,43 And all were astonished by the majesty of God. While they were all amazed at his every deed, he said to his disciples,
Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.44 "Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men."
But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.45 But they did not understand this saying; its meaning was hidden from them so that they should not understand it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.46 An argument arose among the disciples about which of them was the greatest.
And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,47 Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child and placed it by his side
And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.48 and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. For the one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest."
And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.49 Then John said in reply, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow in our company."
And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.50 Jesus said to him, "Do not prevent him, for whoever is not against you is for you."
And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,51 When the days for his being taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem,
And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.52 and he sent messengers ahead of him. On the way they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there,
And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.53 but they would not welcome him because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem.
And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?54 When the disciples James and John saw this they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?"
But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.55 Jesus turned and rebuked them,
For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.56 and they journeyed to another village.
And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.57 As they were proceeding on their journey someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go."
And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.58 Jesus answered him, "Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head."
And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.59 And to another he said, "Follow me." But he replied, "(Lord,) let me go first and bury my father."
Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.60 But he answered him, "Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God."
And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.61 And another said, "I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home."
And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.62 (To him) Jesus said, "No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God."
