Sirach 22

1 A slothful man is compared to a filthy stone, and every one will hiss him out to his disgrace.	1 Il pigro è lapidato con sassi coperti di fango: e tutti parleranno di lui con dispregio.
2 A slothful man is compared to the filth of a dunghill: every man that takes it up will shake his hand.	2 Il pigro è lapidato collo sterco di bue: tutti quelli, che ne toccano, scuotono le loro mani.
3 An evilnurtured man is the dishonour of his father that begat him: and a [foolish] daughter is born to his loss.	3 Il figliuolo mal educato è la vergogna del padre, e la figlia sarà poco stimata.
4 A wise daughter shall bring an inheritance to her husband: but she that liveth dishonestly is her father's heaviness.	4 La fanciulla prudente è un'eredità pel suo marito: ma quella, che reca disdoro, è l'obbrobrio del genitore.
5 She that is bold dishonoureth both her father and her husband, but they both shall despise her.	5 Quella, che è sfacciata, disonora il padre, e il marito, e non la cederà agli empj, e sarà vilipesa dall'uno, e dall'altro.
6 A tale out of season [is as] musick in mourning: but stripes and correction of wisdom are never out of time.	6 Un ragionamento fuor di tempo è come la musica del duolo: ma la sferza, e l'istruzione in ogni tempo sono saggezza.
7 Whoso teacheth a fool is as one that glueth a potsherd together, and as he that waketh one from a sound sleep.	7 CUi ammaestra uno stolto è come chi vuol rimettere insieme un vaso di terra rotto.
8 He that telleth a tale to a fool speaketh to one in a slumber: when he hath told his tale, he will say, What is the matter?	8 Chi fa parole con uno, che non ascolta, fa come chi vuole svegliare il dormiente dal suo letargo.
9 If children live honestly, and have wherewithal, they shall cover the baseness of their parents.	9 Chi collo stolto ragiona di sapienza, parla con un, che dorme; e questi alla fine del ragionamento dice: chi è costui?
10 But children, being haughty, through disdain and want of nurture do stain the nobility of their kindred.	10 Piangi il morto, che è privato della luce, e piangi lo stolto perché è privo di senno.
11 Weep for the dead, for he hath lost the light: and weep for the fool, for he wanteth understanding: make little weeping for the dead, for he is at rest: but the life of the fool is worse than death.	11 Ma piangi per poco un morto, dapoichè egli ha riposo.
12 Seven days do men mourn for him that is dead; but for a fool and an ungodly man all the days of his life.	12 Ma la pessima vita dell'empio stolto è peggiore della morte.
13 Talk not much with a fool, and go not to him that hath no understanding: beware of him, lest thou have trouble, and thou shalt never be defiled with his fooleries: depart from him, and thou shalt find rest, and never be disquieted with madness.	13 Il morto si piange per sette giorni; ma lo stolto, e l'empio per tutto il tempo della loro vita.
14 What is heavier than lead? and what is the name thereof, but a fool?	14 Non parlar molto coll'empio, e non andar insieme coll'insensato.
15 Sand, and salt, and a mass of iron, is easier to bear, than a man without understanding.	15 Guardati da lui per non avere inquietudini, e affinchè non ti si attacchi macchia dal suo peccato.
16 As timber girt and bound together in a building cannot be loosed with shaking: so the heart that is stablished by advised counsel shall fear at no time.	16 Schivalo, e sarai tranquillo, e non soffrirai il tedio di sua stoltezza.
17 A heart settled upon a thought of understanding is as a fair plaistering on the wall of a gallery.	17 Qual altra cosa si nominerà, che pesi più del piombo, fuorché lo stolto?
18 Pales set on an high place will never stand against the wind: so a fearful heart in the imagination of a fool cannot stand against any fear.	18 E più facile a portarsi l'arena, il sale, e una massa di ferro, che un imprudente, uno stolto, un empio.
19 He that pricketh the eye will make tears to fall: and he that pricketh the heart maketh it to shew her knowledge.	19 Un legamento di travi unite insieme nel fondamento di un edilizio non si scompagina; cosi un cuore appoggiato a ben pensato consiglio.
20 Whoso casteth a stone at the birds frayeth them away: and he that upbraideth his friend breaketh friendship.	20 Le risoluzioni dell'uom sensato non saranno alterate dal timore in nissun tempo.
21 Though thou drewest a sword at thy friend, yet despair not: for there may be a returning [to favour.]	21 Come i pali piantati in luogo alto, e le muraglie a secco non resistono all'urto dei venti;
22 If thou hast opened thy mouth against thy friend, fear not; for there may be a reconciliation: except for upbraiding, or pride, or disclosing of secrets, or a treacherous wound: for for these things every friend will depart.	22 Cosi parimente il cuor dello stolto, timido ne' suoi pensieri non resisterà all'impeto del timore.
23 Be faithful to thy neighbour in his poverty, that thou mayest rejoice in his prosperity: abide stedfast unto him in the time of his trouble, that thou mayest be heir with him in his heritage: for a mean estate is not always to be contemned: nor the rich that is foolish to be had in admiration.	23 Siccome il cuor dello stolto, che paventa ne' suoi pensieri, non in ogni tempo temerà; cosi colui, che sta saldo ne' comandamenti di Dio è sempre senza timore.
24 As the vapour and smoke of a furnace goeth before the fire; so reviling before blood.	24 Chi punge l'occhio ne spreme le lagrime, e chi punge il cuore, ne tragge fuori gli affetti.
25 I will not be ashamed to defend a friend; neither will I hide myself from him.	25 Chi scaglia un sasso contro gli uccelli, li fa scappare, così pure chi parla male dell'amico, scioglie l'amicizia.
26 And if any evil happen unto me by him, every one that heareth it will beware of him.	26 Quand'anche tu avessi tirata fuori la spada contro l'amico, non di sperare; perocché puoi tornare in grazia con esso.
27 Who shall set a watch before my mouth, and a seal of wisdom upon my lips, that I fall not suddenly by them, and that my tongue destroy me not?	27 Se avrai dette all'amico parole d'ira, non temere, v'è luogo alla pace, purché non vi sia stata maldicenza, né rimprovero, né superbia, né manifestazione del segreto, nè colpo di tradimento; per queste cose tutte l'amico si fuggirà.
	28 Serba fede all'amico nella sua povertà, affin di godere delle sue prosperità.
	29 Mantienti fedele a lui nel tempo della tribolazione, affin di essere chiamato a parte della sua eredità.
	30 Il vapore, e il fumo si alza dalla fornace prima che il fuoco, così le maldicenze, le contumelie, e le minacce precedono lo spargimento del sangue.
	31 Io non mi vergognerò di salutare l'amico, non mi nasconderò da lui, e se mi verrà del male da lui, lo sopporterò.
	32 Ma chiunque ne sarà informato, si guarderà da lui.
	33 Chi porrà una guardia alla mia bocca, e un sigillo inviolabile alle mie labbra, perch'io non cada per loro colpa, e la mia lingua con sia la mia perdizione?
