2 Maccabees 6

1 Not long after this the king sent an old man of Athens to compel the Jews to depart from the laws of their fathers, and not to live after the laws of God:	1 Ma non dopo molto tempo mandò il re uno uomo antico di Antiochia, il quale constrignesse i Giudei, che si rimovessono dalle leggi di Dio e della patria;
2 And to pollute also the temple in Jerusalem, and to call it the temple of Jupiter Olympius; and that in Garizim, of Jupiter the Defender of strangers, as they did desire that dwelt in the place.	2 e che contaminasse anco il tempio il quale era in Ierusalem, e farlo chiamare tempio di Giove Olimpio; e [in] Garizim, secondo ch' erano quelli i quali abitavano nel luogo, di Giove ospitale.
3 The coming in of this mischief was sore and grievous to the people:	3 Ed era uno pessimo e grave contracorso di mali a tutti.
4 For the temple was filled with riot and revelling by the Gentiles, who dallied with harlots, and had to do with women within the circuit of the holy places, and besides that brought in things that were not lawful.	4 Però che anco il tempio era pieno di lussuria, e di conviti e mangiari disordinati, e di persone che usavano con meretrici; e le femine s' intromettevano dei vasi sacri più di quello era conveniente, mettendovi dentro cose che non erano lecite.
5 The altar also was filled with profane things, which the law forbiddeth.	5 Anco l'altare era pieno di molte cose illecite, le quali erano proibite per la legge.
6 Neither was it lawful for a man to keep sabbath days or ancient fasts, or to profess himself at all to be a Jew.	6 E non si servava li sabbati, nè li dì solenni (delli padri, ovver) della patria erano servati; e non era alcuno, che confessasse che fusse Giudeo.
7 And in the day of the king's birth every month they were brought by bitter constraint to eat of the sacrifices; and when the fast of Bacchus was kept, the Jews were compelled to go in procession to Bacchus, carrying ivy.	7 Ed erano menati, con amara necessità, nel dì della natività del re alli sacrificii; e celebrandosi le cose sacre di (dio) Bacco (lo quale è iddio del vino), erano costretti di circuire il tempio di (dio) Bacco, coronati di ellera.
8 Moreover there went out a decree to the neighbour cities of the heathen, by the suggestion of Ptolemee, against the Jews, that they should observe the same fashions, and be partakers of their sacrifices:	8 E oltre questo fu fatto uno comandamento nelle prossime città de' Gentili, incitando i Tolomei, che anco per questo medesimo modo facessino contro alli Giudei, [acciò] che sacrificassino;
9 And whoso would not conform themselves to the manners of the Gentiles should be put to death. Then might a man have seen the present misery.	9 e quelli che non vogliano transferirsi agl' instituti de' Gentili, uccidessono; ed era una miseria veder queste cose.
10 For there were two women brought, who had circumcised their children; whom when they had openly led round about the city, the babes handing at their breasts, they cast them down headlong from the wall.	10 E furono accusate due donne, che aveano circonciso i suoi figliuoli; le quali, avendo i figliuoli appiccati alle poppe, essendo menate pubblicamente per la città, le precipitarono per le mura.
11 And others, that had run together into caves near by, to keep the sabbath day secretly, being discovered by Philip, were all burnt together, because they made a conscience to help themselves for the honour of the most sacred day.	11 Alcuni altri nascosamente nelle spelonche celebravano il sabbato; ed essendo manifestati a Filippo, furono arsi, però che aveano riverenza, per la religione e l'osservanza, di farsi alcuno adiutorio pur con le mani.
12 Now I beseech those that read this book, that they be not discouraged for these calamities, but that they judge those punishments not to be for destruction, but for a chastening of our nation.	12 Io veramente priego voi li quali leggerete questo libro, che non vi maravigliate per queste cose avverse, ma reputate (che) queste cose che avvennero, non esser a distruzione della nostra gente, ma a correzione.
13 For it is a token of his great goodness, when wicked doers are not suffered any long time, but forthwith punished.	13 Però che non permettere che i peccatori molto tempo òperino male, ma sùbito castigarli, indicio di uno grande beneficio.
14 For not as with other nations, whom the Lord patiently forbeareth to punish, till they be come to the fulness of their sins, so dealeth he with us,	14 Non certo così, come nelle altre nazioni, il Signore aspetta pazientemente, acciò che quando verrà il dì del giudicio li punisca nella moltitudine de' loro peccati.
15 Lest that, being come to the height of sin, afterwards he should take vengeance of us.	15 E così anco in noi ordinò, ch' essendo divenuti i nostri peccati nella fine, così anco dopo soprainduca la vendetta.
16 And therefore he never withdraweth his mercy from us: and though he punish with adversity, yet doth he never forsake his people.	16 Per la qual cosa (certamente) già mai non rimove la sua misericordia da noi; però che correggendo nelle avversità, il suo popolo non abbandona.
17 But let this that we at spoken be for a warning unto us. And now will we come to the declaring of the matter in a few words.	17 E queste poche cose, che noi abbiamo qui interposte, sia ammaestramento di quelli che leggeranno. E ora è tempo di venire alla narrazione.
18 Eleazar, one of the principal scribes, an aged man, and of a well favoured countenance, was constrained to open his mouth, and to eat swine's flesh.	18 Eleazaro adunque, uno delli maggiori scribi, uomo di età provetta e bello di volto, con la bocca aperta gemendo, era isforzato che mangiasse la carne del porco.
19 But he, choosing rather to die gloriously, than to live stained with such an abomination, spit it forth, and came of his own accord to the torment,	19 E lui desiderando più tosto la gloriosa morte, che la vita odiosa, volontariamente andava inanzi al supplicio.
20 As it behoved them to come, that are resolute to stand out against such things, as are not lawful for love of life to be tasted.	20 E considerando lui a che modo si debba vivendo operare, sostenendo pazientemente, deliberò di non consentire ad alcuna cosa illecita per amore della vita.
21 But they that had the charge of that wicked feast, for the old acquaintance they had with the man, taking him aside, besought him to bring flesh of his own provision, such as was lawful for him to use, and make as if he did eat of the flesh taken from the sacrifice commanded by the king;	21 Ma coloro i quali erano circostanti, commossi da una iniqua miserazione per cagione della antica amicizia che loro aveano con lui, traendolo da canto lo pregavano secretamente che fussero condutte carni le quali fosse lecito a lui di mangiarle, acciò che simulasse di aver mangiato, sì come il re avea comandato, delle carni del sacrificio,
22 That in so doing he might be delivered from death, and for the old friendship with them find favour.	22 acciò che, finto questo, fusse liberato dalla morte; e (anco) per amore dell' antica sua amicizia. facevano con lui questa umanità.
23 But he began to consider discreetly, and as became his age, and the excellency of his ancient years, and the honour of his gray head, whereon was come, and his most honest education from a child, or rather the holy law made and given by God: therefore he answered accordingly, and willed them straightways to send him to the grave.	23 Ma lui cominciò a pensare la degna e prestante sua antichità, e la canizie della sua strenua nobilità, ed esser stato da fanciullo in su di ottima conversazione, e sempre esser vivuto secondo la osservanza della legge instituita da Dio; rispose sùbito dicendo voler anteponer più tosto esser nell' inferno.
24 For it becometh not our age, said he, in any wise to dissemble, whereby many young persons might think that Eleazar, being fourscore years old and ten, were now gone to a strange religion;	24 Non (era e non) è degno alla condizion nostra, disse lui, di fingere; come molti giovani, pensando Eleazaro di nonanta anni doversi transferire alla vita della gente (forestiera e) aliena,
25 And so they through mine hypocrisy, and desire to live a little time and a moment longer, should be deceived by me, and I get a stain to mine old age, and make it abominable.	25 e loro per cagione della mia simulazione, e amore di un poco di vita corruttibile, siano ingannati; e per questo acquisti alla mia vecchiezza macula, e cosa aliena dalle cose sacre.
26 For though for the present time I should be delivered from the punishment of men: yet should I not escape the hand of the Almighty, neither alive, nor dead.	26 Però che se [bene] nel tempo presente io sia liberato dalli supplicii umani, niente di meno nè vivo nè morto potrò fuggire la mano dello Onnipotente Iddio.
27 Wherefore now, manfully changing this life, I will shew myself such an one as mine age requireth,	27 Per la qual cagione fortemente superando questa vita, apparirò degno di antichitade.
28 And leave a notable example to such as be young to die willingly and courageously for the honourable and holy laws. And when he had said these words, immediately he went to the torment:	28 E alli giovani lascerò (buono e) forte esempio, se con l'animo pronto e costante per osservazione delle nostre santissime e verissime leggi passerò da questa vita con una onesta morte. E dette queste cose, sùbito era menato al supplicio.
29 They that led him changing the good will they bare him a little before into hatred, because the foresaid speeches proceeded, as they thought, from a desperate mind.	29 E quelli che il menavano, e poco inanzi dimostrarono qualche misericordia (volendolo liberare), si voltorono in ira (contro a lui) per le parole che lui avea dette, le quali loro pensavano che per arroganza le avesse dette.
30 But when he was ready to die with stripes, he groaned, and said, It is manifest unto the Lord, that hath the holy knowledge, that whereas I might have been delivered from death, I now endure sore pains in body by being beaten: but in soul am well content to suffer these things, because I fear him.	30 E conciosia cosa che con gravi piaghe lo percotessero (per ucciderlo), cominciò a lacrimare e disse: Signore, il quale conosci per manifesta scienza, tu sai che possendo esser liberato dalla morte, io sostengo durissimi dolori corporali; ma secondo l' anima, per lo tuo timore, volontieri sostengo queste cose.
31 And thus this man died, leaving his death for an example of a noble courage, and a memorial of virtue, not only unto young men, but unto all his nation.	31 Ed Eleazaro a questo modo si morì, lasciando memoria della morte sua ad esempio di virtù e di fortezza, non solo alli giovani, ma anco a tutta la gente.
