1 Now after that she had ceased to cry unto the God of Israel, and bad made an end of all these words.	1 Quand Judith termina de crier vers le Dieu d’Israël, quand elle eut mis fin à sa prière,
2 She rose where she had fallen down, and called her maid, and went down into the house in the which she abode in the sabbath days, and in her feast days,	2 elle se releva, appela sa servante et descendit dans la maison comme elle faisait les jours de sabbat et les jours de fête.
3 And pulled off the sackcloth which she had on, and put off the garments of her widowhood, and washed her body all over with water, and anointed herself with precious ointment, and braided the hair of her head, and put on a tire upon it, and put on her garments of gladness, wherewith she was clad during the life of Manasses her husband.	3 Elle enleva le sac qu’elle portait sur son corps et quitta ses habits de deuil, elle prit un bain, se parfuma abondamment, peigna ses cheveux; elle se mit un turban et enfila une robe de fête qu’elle portait du vivant de son mari Manassé.
4 And she took sandals upon her feet, and put about her her bracelets, and her chains, and her rings, and her earrings, and all her ornaments, and decked herself bravely, to allure the eyes of all men that should see her.	4 Elle mit des sandales, elle passa ses colliers, ses bracelets, ses bagues, ses boucles d’oreilles, en un mot, tous ses bijoux. Elle se fit, on ne peut plus belle: rien qu’à la voir, n’importe quel homme aurait été séduit.
5 Then she gave her maid a bottle of wine, and a cruse of oil, and filled a bag with parched corn, and lumps of figs, and with fine bread; so she folded all these things together, and laid them upon her.	5 Elle confia à sa servante une outre de vin, une jarre d’huile, elle mit dans un sac des grains rôtis, un gâteau de figues et des pains purs; elle enveloppa le tout soigneusement et le lui donna.
6 Thus they went forth to the gate of the city of Bethulia, and found standing there Ozias and the ancients of the city, Chabris and Charmis.	6 Elles sortirent toutes deux par la porte de la ville de Béthulie; là se trouvaient Osias et les anciens de la ville Chabris et Charmis.
7 And when they saw her, that her countenance was altered, and her apparel was changed, they wondered at her beauty very greatly, and said unto her.	7 Lorsqu’ils la virent changée d’aspect et si belle dans ses vêtements, ils furent émerveillés de sa beauté. Ils lui dirent:
8 The God, the God of our fathers give thee favour, and accomplish thine enterprizes to the glory of the children of Israel, and to the exaltation of Jerusalem. Then they worshipped God.	8 “Que le Dieu de nos pères te garde en sa bonté et qu’il te permette de réaliser tes projets pour la joie des fils d’Israël et la gloire de Jérusalem!”
9 And she said unto them, Command the gates of the city to be opened unto me, that I may go forth to accomplish the things whereof ye have spoken with me. So they commanded the young men to open unto her, as she had spoken.	9 Elle adora Dieu puis elle leur dit: “Ordonnez qu’on m’ouvre la porte de la ville et je sortirai pour faire cela même que vous venez de dire.” Alors ils ordonnèrent aux gardes de lui ouvrir, comme elle l’avait demandé.
10 And when they had done so, Judith went out, she, and her maid with her; and the men of the city looked after her, until she was gone down the mountain, and till she had passed the valley, and could see her no more.	10 On ouvrit la porte et Judith sortit avec sa servante; les hommes de la ville la suivirent du regard pendant qu’elle descendait de la montagne, puis lorsqu’elle franchit le vallon; ensuite ils ne la virent plus.
11 Thus they went straight forth in the valley: and the first watch of the Assyrians met her,	11 Comme elle marchait tout droit dans le vallon, des éclaireurs assyriens vinrent à sa rencontre.
12 And took her, and asked her, Of what people art thou? and whence comest thou? and whither goest thou? And she said, I am a woman of the Hebrews, and am fled from them: for they shall be given you to be consumed:	12 Ils l’arrêtèrent et lui demandèrent: “De quel côté es-tu? D’où viens-tu et où vas-tu?” Elle répondit: “Je suis une fille des Hébreux et je m’enfuis, car ils ne vont pas tarder à être livrés au pillage.
13 And I am coming before Holofernes the chief captain of your army, to declare words of truth; and I will shew him a way, whereby he shall go, and win all the hill country, without losing the body or life of any one of his men.	13 Et moi, je viens voir Holoferne, le général en chef de votre armée, pour lui donner des renseignements précis. Je vais lui indiquer un chemin par lequel il pourra passer pour se rendre maître de toute la montagne, sans aucun risque pour ses hommes.”
14 Now when the men heard her words, and beheld her countenance, they wondered greatly at her beauty, and said unto her,	14 Les soldats qui la voyaient et l’entendaient parler ainsi lui dirent:
15 Thou hast saved thy life, in that thou hast hasted to come down to the presence of our lord: now therefore come to his tent, and some of us shall conduct thee, until they have delivered thee to his hands.	15 “Tu as eu bien raison de descendre au plus vite pour aller voir notre seigneur. Va donc le trouver dans sa tente. Quelques-uns d’entre nous vont t’accompagner et te remettront entre ses mains.
16 And when thou standest before him, be not afraid in thine heart, but shew unto him according to thy word; and he will entreat thee well.	16 Lorsque tu seras devant lui, n’aie pas peur, mais dis-lui bien tout ce que tu as à lui dire et il te le revaudra.”
17 Then they chose out of them an hundred men to accompany her and her maid; and they brought her to the tent of Holofernes.	17 Ils choisirent donc 100 hommes qui se joignirent à elle et à sa servante et qui les conduisirent toutes deux à la tente d’Holoferne.
18 Then was there a concourse throughout all the camp: for her coming was noised among the tents, and they came about her, as she stood without the tent of Holofernes, till they told him of her.	18 De tout le camp on accourut, car la nouvelle de sa présence s’était répandue dans les tentes. On se rassemblait autour d’elle pendant qu’elle attendait devant la tente d’Holoferne à qui l’on avait annoncé son arrivée.
19 And they wondered at her beauty, and admired the children of Israel because of her, and every one said to his neighbour, Who would despise this people, that have among them such women? surely it is not good that one man of them be left who being let go might deceive the whole earth.	19 Tous étaient émerveillés de sa beauté et, à travers elle, ils admiraient les Israélites. Ils se disaient l’un à l’autre: “Qui pourrait mépriser un peuple qui possède de si belles femmes? Il n’est pas bon d’en laisser un seul en vie, ceux qui resteraient seraient capables de séduire toute la terre.”
20 And they that lay near Holofernes went out, and all his servants and they brought her into the tent.	20 Les gardes d’Holoferne et tous ses officiers sortirent, ils la firent entrer dans la tente.
21 Now Holofernes rested upon his bed under a canopy, which was woven with purple, and gold, and emeralds, and precious stones.	21 À ce moment Holoferne était étendu sur son lit, sous une draperie de pourpre et d’or brodée d’émeraudes et de pierres précieuses.
22 So they shewed him of her; and he came out before his tent with silver lamps going before him.	22 Dès qu’on lui parla d’elle, il vint à sa rencontre dans le vestibule de la tente, précédé de flambeaux d’argent.
23 And when Judith was come before him and his servants they all marvelled at the beauty of her countenance; and she fell down upon her face, and did reverence unto him: and his servants took her up.	23 Lorsque Judith arriva devant lui et devant ses officiers, tous furent émerveillés de sa beauté; quant à elle, elle tomba la face contre terre et se prosterna devant lui. Les serviteurs d’Holoferne la relevèrent.
