1 Ezután körülbelül egy hónap múlva az történt, hogy az ammonita Naás felvonult és hadba szállt Jábes-Gileád ellen. All the men of Jabesh begged Nahash, "Make a treaty with us, and we will be your subjects."
2 Ám az ammonita Naás azt felelte nekik: »Csak úgy kötök szövetséget veletek, ha kivájathatom mindannyiatok jobb szemét, s így meggyalázhatlak titeket egész Izrael előtt.«	2 But Nahash the Ammonite replied, "This is my condition for a treaty with you: I must gouge out every man's right eye, that I may thus bring ignominy on all Israel."
3 Azt mondták erre neki Jábes vénei: »Engedj nekünk hét napot, hogy követeket küldhessünk Izrael minden határába: s ha nem akad, aki megvéd minket, akkor kimegyünk hozzád.«	3 The elders of Jabesh said to him: "Give us seven days to send messengers throughout the territory of Israel. If no one rescues us, we will surrender to you."
4 Elmentek tehát a követek Saul Gibeájába, s elmondták e szavakat a nép hallatára. Erre az egész nép hangos sírásra fakadt.	4 When the messengers arrived at Gibeah of Saul, they related the news to the people, all of whom wept aloud.
5 Íme, azonban éppen akkor jött meg Saul, aki marháit terelte haza a mezőről és azt mondta: »Mi baja van a népnek, hogy sír?« Erre elbeszélték neki a jábesi emberek szavait.	5 Just then Saul came in from the field, behind his oxen. "Why are the people weeping?" he asked. The message of the inhabitants of Jabesh was repeated to him.

7 Erre ő vette mind a két marhát, darabokra vagdalta, s követekkel elküldte Izrael minden határába és azt mondta: »Aki nem vonul ki és nem követi Sault és Sámuelt, annak marháival ugyanígy fog történni.« Elfogta erre a népet az Úr félelme, és egy emberként kivonultak.	7 Taking a yoke of oxen, he cut them into pieces, which he sent throughout the territory of Israel by couriers with the message, "If anyone does not come out to follow Saul (and Samuel), the same as this will be done to his oxen!" In dread of the LORD, the people turned out to a man.
8 Ő meg is számlálta őket Bezekben, s Izrael fiai háromszázezren, Júda emberei pedig harmincezren voltak.	8 When he reviewed them in Bezek, there were three hundred thousand Israelites and seventy thousand Judahites.
9 Azt mondták erre az odajött követeknek: »Ezt mondjátok a jábesgileádi embereknek: Holnap, mire az idő felmelegszik, megszabadultok.« Elmentek tehát a követek, s hírül vitték ezt a jábesi embereknek, s azok megörültek.	9 To the messengers who had come he said, "Tell the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead that tomorrow, while the sun is hot, they will be rescued." The messengers came and reported this to the inhabitants of Jabesh, who were jubilant,
10 Ki is üzentek az ammonitáknak: »Holnap kimegyünk hozzátok, s tehettek velünk akármit, ami nektek tetszik.«	10 and said to Nahash, "Tomorrow we will surrender to you, and you may do whatever you please with us."
11 Amikor aztán a másnap elérkezett, az történt, hogy Saul három részre osztotta a népet, s a hajnali őrködés idején behatolt a táborba és mire az idő felmelegedett, megverte az ammonitákat; a megmaradtak is úgy szétszóródtak, hogy kettő sem maradt közülük együtt.	11 On the appointed day, Saul arranged his troops in three companies and invaded the camp during the dawn watch. They slaughtered Ammonites until the heat of the day; by then the survivors were so scattered that no two were left together.
12 Ekkor a nép így szólt Sámuelhez: »Ki az, aki azt mondta: ‘Hát Saul fog uralkodni rajtunk?’ Adjátok ki azokat az embereket, s öljük meg őket.«	12 The people then said to Samuel: "Who questioned whether Saul should rule over us? Hand over the men and we will put them to death."
13 Ám Saul azt mondta: »Senkit sem szabad megölni ezen a napon, mert ma az Úr szabadulást szerzett Izraelnek.«	13 But Saul broke in to say, "No man is to be put to death this day, for today the LORD has saved Israel."
14 Azt mondta erre Sámuel a népnek: »Gyertek, menjünk Gilgálba, s újítsuk ott meg a királyságot.«	14 Samuel said to the people, "Come, let us go to Gilgal to inaugurate the kingdom there."
15 El is ment az egész nép Gilgálba, s ott királlyá tették Sault az Úr előtt Gilgálban, s békeáldozatokat vágtak ott az Úr előtt és nagyon örvendezett Saul s Izraelnek valamennyi embere.	15 So all the people went to Gilgal, where, in the presence of the LORD, they made Saul king. They also sacrificed peace offerings there before the LORD, and Saul and all the Israelites celebrated the occasion with great joy.
