1 Volt egy Lázár nevű beteg Betániában, Máriának és nővérének, Mártának a falujában.	1 There was a man named Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister, Martha, and he wasil .
2 Mária volt az, aki megkente az Urat kenettel, és lábát hajával törölgette. Az ő testvére, Lázár volt beteg.	2 It was the same Mary, the sister of the sick man Lazarus, who anointed the Lord with ointment andwiped his feet with her hair.

4 Amikor Jézus meghallotta ezt, így szólt: »Ez a betegség nem válik halálára, hanem Isten dicsőségére, hogy megdicsőüljön általa az Isten Fia.«	4 On receiving the message, Jesus said, 'This sickness will not end in death, but it is for God's glory sothat through it the Son of God may be glorified.'

11 Ezt mondta, azután így szólt hozzájuk: »A barátunk, Lázár elaludt, de megyek, hogy felkeltsem őt az álomból.«	11 He said that and then added, 'Our friend Lazarus is at rest; I am going to wake him.'
12 A tanítványok erre azt mondták: »Uram, ha alszik, meg fog gyógyulni.«	12 The disciples said to him, 'Lord, if he is at rest he wil be saved.'
13 Jézus azonban a haláláról szólt, azok pedig azt gondolták, hogy az álom nyugalmáról beszél.	13 Jesus was speaking of the death of Lazarus, but they thought that by 'rest' he meant 'sleep';
14 Ezért Jézus nyíltan megmondta nekik: »Lázár meghalt,	14 so Jesus put it plainly, 'Lazarus is dead;
15 és örülök miattatok, hogy nem voltam ott, hogy majd higgyetek. De menjünk hozzá!«	15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there because now you will believe. But let us go to him.'
16 Tamás, akit Ikernek neveznek, így szólt a többi tanítványhoz: »Menjünk mi is, és haljunk meg vele együtt!«	16 Then Thomas -- known as the Twin -- said to the other disciples, 'Let us also go to die with him.'

20 Márta, amint meghallotta, hogy Jézus jön, eléje ment, Mária pedig otthon maradt.	20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in thehouse.
21 Márta akkor így szólt Jézushoz: »Uram, ha itt lettél volna, nem halt volna meg a testvérem.	21 Martha said to Jesus, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died,
22 De most is tudom, hogy bármit is kérsz Istentől, Isten megadja neked.«	22 but even now I know that God will grant whatever you ask of him.'

25 Jézus azt mondta neki: »Én vagyok a föltámadás és az élet. Aki hisz bennem, még ha meg is halt, élni fog,	25 Jesus said: I am the resurrection. Anyone who believes in me, even though that person dies, wil live,
26 és mindaz, aki él és hisz bennem, nem hal meg soha. Hiszed ezt?«	26 and whoever lives and believes in me wil never die. Do you believe this?
27 Márta azt felelte neki: »Igen, Uram, hiszem, hogy te vagy a Krisztus, az Isten Fia, aki a világba jön.«	27 'Yes, Lord,' she said, 'I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come intothis world.'
28 Miután ezt mondta, elment és hívta a nővérét, Máriát, és odasúgta neki: »A Mester itt van és hív téged.«	28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in a low voice, 'The Master ishere and wants to see you.'

31 A zsidók pedig, akik a házban vele voltak és őt vigasztalták, amikor látták, hogy Mária gyorsan fölkelt és kiment, utánamentek, mert azt gondolták: »A sírhoz megy, hogy ott sírjon.«	31 When the Jews who were in the house comforting Mary saw her get up so quickly and go out, theyfol owed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.

35 Jézus könnyezett.	35 Jesus wept;

37 De voltak köztük, akik így szóltak: »Ő, aki megnyitotta a vak szemeit, nem tehette volna meg, hogy ez meg ne haljon?«	37 But there were some who remarked, 'He opened the eyes of the blind man. Could he not haveprevented this man's death?'
38 Jézus, lelkében még mindig megindulva a sírhoz ment. Egy barlang volt az, és kővel volt befedve.	38 Sighing again, Jesus reached the tomb: it was a cave with a stone to close the opening.

41 A követ tehát elvették. Jézus pedig fölemelte szemeit, és így szólt: »Atyám, hálát adok neked, hogy meghallgattál.	41 So they took the stone away. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said: Father, I thank you for hearingmy prayer.
42 Én ugyan tudtam, hogy mindenkor meghallgatsz, csak a körülálló népért mondtam, hogy higgyék, hogy te küldtél engem.«	42 I myself knew that you hear me always, but I speak for the sake of all these who are standing aroundme, so that they may believe it was you who sent me.
43 Miután ezeket mondta, hangosan ezt kiáltotta: »Lázár, jöjj ki!«	43 When he had said this, he cried in a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out!'
44 S az, aki halott volt, kijött. A lába és a keze pólyával volt körülkötve, és az arcát kendő födte. 51 Ezt pedig nem magától mondta, hanem, főpap lévén abban az esztendőben, megjövendölte, hogy Jézus meg fog halni a nemzetért,	51 He did not speak in his own person, but as high priest of that year he was prophesying that Jesuswas to die for the nation-
52 és nemcsak a nemzetért, hanem hogy az Isten szétszórt gyermekeit egybegyűjtse.	52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather together into one the scattered children of God.
53 Attól a naptól tehát elhatározták, hogy megölik őt.	53 From that day onwards they were determined to kill him.
54 Ezért Jézus már nem járt nyilvánosan a zsidók közt. Elment onnan a puszta melletti vidékre, egy Efraim nevű városba, és ott tartózkodott a tanítványaival együtt.	54 So Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but left the district for a town cal ed Ephraim,in the country bordering on the desert, and stayed there with his disciples.

57 A főpapok és a farizeusok pedig parancsot adtak, hogy ha valaki megtudja, hol van, jelentse, és elfogják őt.	57 The chief priests and Pharisees had by now given their orders: anyone who knew where he was mustinform them so that they could arrest him.
