GREEK BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
και πας ο οχλος ητο επι της γης πλησιον της θαλασσης.1 Again he began to teach them by the lakeside, but such a huge crowd gathered round him that he gotinto a boat on the water and sat there. The whole crowd were at the lakeside on land.
Και εδιδασκεν αυτους δια παραβολων πολλα, και ελεγε προς αυτους εν τη διδαχη αυτου?2 He taught them many things in parables, and in the course of his teaching he said to them,
Imagine a sower going out to sow.
Και ενω εσπειρεν, αλλο μεν επεσε παρα την οδον, και ηλθον τα πετεινα του ουρανου και κατεφαγον αυτο.4 Now it happened that, as he sowed, some of the seed fell on the edge of the path, and the birds cameand ate it up.
Αλλο δε επεσεν επι το πετρωδες, οπου δεν ειχε γην πολλην, και ευθυς ανεφυη, διοτι δεν ειχε βαθος γης,5 Some seed fell on rocky ground where it found little soil and at once sprang up, because there was nodepth of earth;
και οτε ανετειλεν ο ηλιος εκαυματισθη, και επειδη δεν ειχε ριζαν εξηρανθη.6 and when the sun came up it was scorched and, not having any roots, it withered away.
Και αλλο επεσεν εις τας ακανθας, και ανεβησαν αι ακανθαι και συνεπνιξαν αυτο, και καρπον δεν εδωκε?7 Some seed fell into thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it produced no crop.
και αλλο επεσεν εις την γην την καλην και εδιδε καρπον αναβαινοντα και αυξανοντα, και εδωκεν εν τριακοντα και εν εξηκοντα και εν εκατον.8 And some seeds fell into rich soil, grew tal and strong, and produced a good crop; the yield was thirty, sixty, even a hundredfold.'
Ο εχων ωτα δια να ακουη, ας ακουη.9 And he said, 'Anyone who has ears for listening should listen!'
Οτε δε εμεινε καταμονας, ηρωτησαν αυτον οι περι αυτον μετα των δωδεκα περι της παραβολης.10 When he was alone, the Twelve, together with the others who formed his company, asked what theparables meant.
εις εκεινους δε τους εξω δια παραβολων τα παντα γινονται,11 He told them, 'To you is granted the secret of the kingdom of God, but to those who are outsideeverything comes in parables,
δια να βλεπωσι βλεποντες και να μη ιδωσι, και να ακουωσιν ακουοντες και να μη νοησωσι, μηποτε επιστρεψωσι και συγχωρηθωσιν εις αυτους τα αμαρτηματα.12 so that they may look and look, but never perceive; listen and listen, but never understand; to avoidchanging their ways and being healed.'
Δεν εξευρετε την παραβολην ταυτην, και πως θελετε γνωρισει πασας τας παραβολας;13 He said to them, 'Do you not understand this parable? Then how will you understand any of theparables?
Ο σπειρων τον λογον σπειρει.14 What the sower is sowing is the word.
Οι δε παρα την οδον ειναι ουτοι, εις τους οποιους σπειρεται ο λογος, και οταν ακουσωσιν, ευθυς ερχεται ο Σατανας, και αφαιρει τον λογον τον εσπαρμενον εν ταις καρδιαις αυτων.15 Those on the edge of the path where the word is sown are people who have no sooner heard it thanSatan at once comes and carries away the word that was sown in them.
Και ομοιως οι επι τα πετρωδη σπειρομενοι ειναι ουτοι, οιτινες οταν ακουσωσι τον λογον, ευθυς μετα χαρας δεχονται αυτον,16 Similarly, those who are sown on patches of rock are people who, when first they hear the word, welcome it at once with joy.
επειτα οταν γεινη θλιψις η διωγμος δια τον λογον, ευθυς σκανδαλιζονται.17 But they have no root deep down and do not last; should some trial come, or some persecution onaccount of the word, at once they fal away.
Και οι εις τας ακανθας σπειρομενοι ειναι ουτοι, οιτινες ακουουσι τον λογον,18 Then there are others who are sown in thorns. These have heard the word,
και αι μεριμναι του αιωνος τουτου και η απατη του πλουτου και αι επιθυμιαι των αλλων πραγματων εισερχομεναι συμπνιγουσι τον λογον, και γινεται ακαρπος.19 but the worries of the world, the lure of riches and al the other passions come in to choke the word, and so it produces nothing.
Και οι εις την γην την καλην σπαρεντες ειναι ουτοι, οιτινες ακουουσι τον λογον και παραδεχονται και καρποφορουσιν εν τριακοντα και εν εξηκοντα και εν εκατον.20 And there are those who have been sown in rich soil; they hear the word and accept it and yield aharvest, thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.'
Μηπως ο λυχνος ερχεται δια να τεθη υπο τον μοδιον η υπο την κλινην; ουχι δια να τεθη επι τον λυχνοστατην;21 He also said to them, 'Is a lamp brought in to be put under a tub or under the bed? Surely to be put onthe lamp-stand?
διοτι δεν ειναι τι κρυπτον, το οποιον δεν θελει φανερωθη, ουδ' εγεινε τι αποκρυφον, το οποιον δεν θελει ελθει εις το φανερον.22 For there is nothing hidden, but it must be disclosed, nothing kept secret except to be brought to light.
Οστις εχει ωτα δια να ακουη, ας ακουη.23 Anyone who has ears for listening should listen!'
Και ελεγε προς αυτους? Προσεχετε τι ακουετε. Με οποιον μετρον μετρειτε, θελει μετρηθη εις εσας, και θελει γεινει προσθηκη εις εσας τους ακουοντας.24 He also said to them, 'Take notice of what you are hearing. The standard you use wil be used for you-- and you wil receive more besides;
και οστις δεν εχει, και εκεινο το οποιον εχει θελει αφαιρεθη απ' αυτου.25 anyone who has, will be given more; anyone who has not, wil be deprived even of what he has.'
Ουτως ειναι η βασιλεια του Θεου, ως εαν ανθρωπος ριψη τον σπορον επι της γης,26 He also said, 'This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the land.
και κοιμαται και σηκονηται νυκτα και ημεραν, και ο σπορος βλαστανη και αυξανη καθως αυτος δεν εξευρει.27 Night and day, while he sleeps, when he is awake, the seed is sprouting and growing; how, he doesnot know.
Διοτι αφ' εαυτης η γη καρποφορει, πρωτον χορτον, επειτα ασταχυον, επειτα πληρη σιτον εν τω ασταχυω.28 Of its own accord the land produces first the shoot, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.
Οταν δε ωριμαση ο καρπος, ευθυς αποστελλει το δρεπανον, διοτι ηλθεν ο θερισμος.29 And when the crop is ready, at once he starts to reap because the harvest has come.'
Με τι να ομοιωσωμεν την βασιλειαν του Θεου; η με ποιαν παραβολην να παραβαλωμεν αυτην;30 He also said, 'What can we say that the kingdom is like? What parable can we find for it?
Ειναι ομοια με κοκκον σιναπεως, οστις, οταν σπαρη επι της γης, ειναι μικροτερος παντων των σπερματων των επι της γης?31 It is like a mustard seed which, at the time of its sowing, is the smal est of al the seeds on earth.
αφου δε σπαρη, αναβαινει και γινεται μεγαλητερος παντων των λαχανων και καμνει κλαδους μεγαλους, ωστε υπο την σκιαν αυτου δυνανται τα πετεινα του ουρανου να κατασκηνωσι.32 Yet once it is sown it grows into the biggest shrub of them al and puts out big branches so that thebirds of the air can shelter in its shade.'
Και δια τοιουτων πολλων παραβολων ελαλει προς αυτους τον λογον, καθως ηδυναντο να ακουωσι,33 Using many parables like these, he spoke the word to them, so far as they were capable ofunderstanding it.
κατ ιδιαν ομως εξηγει παντα εις τους μαθητας αυτου.34 He would not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything to his disciples when theywere by themselves.
Ας διελθωμεν εις το περαν.35 With the coming of evening that same day, he said to them, 'Let us cross over to the other side.'
Και αφησαντες τον οχλον, παραλαμβανουσιν αυτον ως ητο εν τω πλοιω και αλλα δε πλοιαρια ησαν μετ' αυτου.36 And leaving the crowd behind they took him, just as he was, in the boat; and there were other boatswith him.
Και γινεται μεγας ανεμοστροβιλος και τα κυματα εισεβαλλον εις το πλοιον, ωστε αυτο ηδη εγεμιζετο.37 Then it began to blow a great gale and the waves were breaking into the boat so that it was almostswamped.
Διδασκαλε, δεν σε μελει οτι χανομεθα;38 But he was in the stern, his head on the cushion, asleep.
Και επαυσεν ο ανεμος, και εγεινε γαληνη μεγαλη.39 They woke him and said to him, 'Master, do you not care? We are lost!' And he woke up and rebukedthe wind and said to the sea, 'Quiet now! Be calm!' And the wind dropped, and there followed a great calm.
Δια τι εισθε ουτω δειλοι; πως δεν εχετε πιστιν;40 Then he said to them, 'Why are you so frightened? Have you stil no faith?'
Τις λοιπον ειναι ουτος, οτι και ο ανεμος και η θαλασσα υπακουουσιν εις αυτον;41 They were overcome with awe and said to one another, 'Who can this be? Even the wind and the seaobey him.'
