DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Then calling together the twelve apostles, he gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.1 He summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases,
And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.2 and he sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal (the sick).
And he said to them: Take nothing for your journey; neither staff, nor scrip, nor bread, nor money; neither have two coats.3 He said to them, "Take nothing for the journey, neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money, and let no one take a second tunic.
And whatsoever house you shall enter into, abide there, and depart not from thence.4 Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there.
And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off even the dust of your feet, for a testimony against them.5 And as for those who do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them."
And going out, they went about through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.6 Then they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the good news and curing diseases everywhere.
Now Herod, the tetrarch, heard of all things that were done by him; and he was in a doubt, because it was said7 Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was greatly perplexed because some were saying, "John has been raised from the dead";
By some, that John was risen from the dead: but by other some, that Elias had appeared; and by others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.8 others were saying, "Elijah has appeared"; still others, "One of the ancient prophets has arisen."
And Herod said: John I have beheaded; but who is this of whom I hear such things? And he sought to see him.9 But Herod said, "John I beheaded. Who then is this about whom I hear such things?" And he kept trying to see him.
And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all they had done. And taking them, he went aside into a desert place, apart, which belongeth to Bethsaida.10 When the apostles returned, they explained to him what they had done. He took them and withdrew in private to a town called Bethsaida.
Which when the people knew, they followed him; and he received them, and spoke to them of the kingdom of God, and healed them who had need of healing.11 The crowds, meanwhile, learned of this and followed him. He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and he healed those who needed to be cured.
Now the day began to decline. And the twelve came and said to him: Send away the multitude, that going into the towns and villages round about, they may lodge and get victuals; for we are here in a desert place.12 As the day was drawing to a close, the Twelve approached him and said, "Dismiss the crowd so that they can go to the surrounding villages and farms and find lodging and provisions; for we are in a deserted place here."
But he said to them: Give you them to eat. And they said: We have no more than five loaves and two fishes; unless perhaps we should go and buy food for all this multitude.13 He said to them, "Give them some food yourselves." They replied, "Five loaves and two fish are all we have, unless we ourselves go and buy food for all these people."
Now there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples: Make them sit down by fifties in a company.14 Now the men there numbered about five thousand. Then he said to his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of (about) fifty."
And they did so; and made them all sit down.15 They did so and made them all sit down.
And taking the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed them; and he broke, and distributed to his disciples, to set before the multitude.16 Then taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing over them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd.
And they did all eat, and were filled. And there were taken up of fragments that remained to them, twelve baskets.17 They all ate and were satisfied. And when the leftover fragments were picked up, they filled twelve wicker baskets.
And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples also were with him: and he asked them, saying: Whom do the people say that I am?18 Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say that I am?"
But they answered, and said: John the Baptist; but some say Elias; and others say that one of the former prophets is risen again.19 They said in reply, "John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, 'One of the ancient prophets has arisen.'"
And he said to them: But whom do you say that I am? Simon Peter answering, said: The Christ of God.20 Then he said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter said in reply, "The Messiah of God."
But he strictly charging them, commanded they should tell this to no man.21 He rebuked them and directed them not to tell this to anyone.
Saying: The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the ancients and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and the third day rise again.22 He said, "The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised."
And he said to all: If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.23 Then he said to all, "If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
For whosoever will save his life, shall lose it; for he that shall lose his life for my sake, shall save it.24 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.
For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, and cast away himself?25 What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself?
For he that shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him the Son of man shall be ashamed, when he shall come in his majesty, and that of his Father, and of the holy angels.26 Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
But I tell you of a truth: There are some standing here that shall not taste death, till they see the kingdom of God.27 Truly I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God."
And it came to pass about eight days after these words, that he took Peter, and James, and John, and went up into a mountain to pray.28 About eight days after he said this, he took Peter, John, and James and went up the mountain to pray.
And whilst he prayed, the shape of his countenance was altered, and his raiment became white and glittering.29 While he was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white.
And behold two men were talking with him. And they were Moses and Elias,30 And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah,
Appearing in majesty. And they spoke of his decease that he should accomplish in Jerusalem.31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem.
But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep. And waking, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.32 Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.
And it came to pass, that as they were departing from him, Peter saith to Jesus: Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias; not knowing what he said.33 As they were about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good that we are here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." But he did not know what he was saying.
And as he spoke these things, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them; and they were afraid, when they entered into the cloud.34 While he was still speaking, a cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud.
And a voice came out of the cloud, saying: This is my beloved Son; hear him.35 Then from the cloud came a voice that said, "This is my chosen Son; listen to him."
And whilst the voice was uttered, Jesus was found alone. And they held their peace, and told no man in those days any of these things which they had seen.36 After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. They fell silent and did not at that time tell anyone what they had seen.
And it came to pass the day following, when they came down from the mountain, there met him a great multitude.37 On the next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him.
And behold a man among the crowd cried out, saying: Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son, because he is my only one.38 There was a man in the crowd who cried out, "Teacher, I beg you, look at my son; he is my only child.
And lo, a spirit seizeth him, and he suddenly crieth out, and he throweth him down and teareth him, so that he foameth; and bruising him, he hardly departeth from him.39 For a spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams and it convulses him until he foams at the mouth; it releases him only with difficulty, wearing him out.
And I desired thy disciples to cast him out, and they could not.40 I begged your disciples to cast it out but they could not."
And Jesus answering, said: O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring hither thy son.41 Jesus said in reply, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be with you and endure you? Bring your son here."
And as he was coming to him, the devil threw him down, and tore him.42 As he was coming forward, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion; but Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and returned him to his father.
And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and cured the boy, and restored him to his father.43 And all were astonished by the majesty of God. While they were all amazed at his every deed, he said to his disciples,
And all were astonished at the mighty power of God. But while all wondered at all the things he did, he said to his disciples: Lay you up in your hearts these words, for it shall come to pass, that the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.44 "Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men."
But they understood not this word; and it was hid from them, so that they perceived it not. And they were afraid to ask him concerning this word.45 But they did not understand this saying; its meaning was hidden from them so that they should not understand it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
And there entered a thought into them, which of them should be greater.46 An argument arose among the disciples about which of them was the greatest.
But Jesus seeing the thoughts of their heart, took a child and set him by him,47 Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child and placed it by his side
And said to them: Whosoever shall receive this child in my name, receiveth me; and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth him that sent me. For he that is the lesser among you all, he is the greater.48 and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. For the one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest."
And John, answering, said: Master, we saw a certain man casting out devils in thy name, and we forbade him, because he followeth not with us.49 Then John said in reply, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow in our company."
And Jesus said to him: Forbid him not; for he that is not against you, is for you.50 Jesus said to him, "Do not prevent him, for whoever is not against you is for you."
And it came to pass, when the days of his assumption were accomplishing, that he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem.51 When the days for his being taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem,
And he sent messengers before his face; and going, they entered into a city of the Samaritans, to prepare for him.52 and he sent messengers ahead of him. On the way they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there,
And they received him not, because his face was of one going to Jerusalem.53 but they would not welcome him because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem.
And when his disciples James and John had seen this, they said: Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them?54 When the disciples James and John saw this they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?"
And turning, he rebuked them, saying: You know not of what spirit you are.55 Jesus turned and rebuked them,
The Son of man came not to destroy souls, but to save. And they went into another town.56 and they journeyed to another village.
And it came to pass, as they walked in the way, that a certain man said to him: I will follow thee withersoever thou goest.57 As they were proceeding on their journey someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go."
Jesus said to him: The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.58 Jesus answered him, "Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head."
But he said to another: Follow me. And he said: Lord, suffer me first to go, and to bury my father.59 And to another he said, "Follow me." But he replied, "(Lord,) let me go first and bury my father."
And Jesus said to him: Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou, and preach the kingdom of God.60 But he answered him, "Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God."
And another said: I will follow thee, Lord; but let me first take my leave of them that are at my house.61 And another said, "I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home."
Jesus said to him: No man putting his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.62 (To him) Jesus said, "No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God."
