1 The Word of the Lord that came to Jeremias concerning the words of the drought.	1 Voici la parole que Yahvé adressa à Jérémie au sujet de la sécheresse:
2 Judea hath mourned, and the gates thereof are fallen, and are become obscure on the ground, and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up.	2 Juda est en deuil, ses villes vont à la ruine, de tristesse elles se traînent à terre, et de Jérusalem s’élève un cri!
3 The great ones sent their inferiors to the water: they came to draw, they found no water, they carried back their vessels empty: they were confounded and afflicted, and covered their heads.	3 Les riches ont envoyé leurs serviteurs pour chercher de l’eau: arrivant aux citernes ils n’ont pas trouvé d’eau et sont revenus avec leurs cruches vides.
4 For the destruction of the land, because there came no rain upon the earth, the husbandmen were confounded, they covered their heads.	4 La terre est crevassée parce qu’il n’a pas plu dans le pays; c’est pourquoi les paysans se sont voilé le visage.
5 Yea, the hind also brought forth in the field, and left it, because there was no grass.	5 Même la biche sauvage abandonne ses petits, car il n’y a pas de verdure.
6 And the wild asses stood upon the rocks, they snuffed up the wind like dragons, their eyes failed, because there was no grass.	6 les ânes sauvages sont montés sur les sommets, ils aspirent l’air comme des chacals et leurs yeux se troublent parce que l’herbe leur manque.
7 If our iniquities have testified against us, O Lord, do thou it for thy name's sake, for our rebellions are many, we have sinned against thee.	7 Même si nos fautes nous accusent, sauve l’honneur de ton nom, ô Yahvé! Nos révoltes sont nombreuses et nous avons péché contre toi.
8 O expectation of Israel, the Saviour thereof in time of trouble: why wilt thou be a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring man turning in to lodge?	8 Mais toi, espoir d’Israël, toi qui le sauves au temps de la détresse, pourquoi te conduire en étranger dans le pays, comme un voyageur de passage pour une nuit?
9 Why wilt thou be as a wandering man, as a mighty man that cannot save? but thou, O Lord, art among us, and thy name is called upon by us, forsake us not.	9 Pourquoi restes-tu comme un homme qui perd la tête, comme un guerrier incapable de sauver? Tu es au milieu de nous, Yahvé, et nous sommes sous la protection de ton Nom; ne nous abandonne pas!
10 Thus saith the Lord to his people, that have loved to move their feet, and have not rested, and have not pleased the Lord: He will now remember their iniquities, and visit their sins.	10 Voici ce que dit Yahvé à propos de ce peuple: “Oui, ils aiment chercher ailleurs, ils ont couru de tous côtés et Yahvé n’est pas du tout content d’eux: c’est pourquoi maintenant il se souvient de leur faute.”
11 And the Lord said to me: Pray not for this people for their good.	11 Yahvé me dit également: “Ne me demande pas de faire du bien à ce peuple.
12 When they fast I will not hear their prayers: and if they offer holocausts and victims, I will not receive them: for I will consume them by the sword, and by famine, and by the pestilence.	12 S’ils jeûnent, je n’écouterai pas leurs prières. S’ils offrent des holocaustes ou des sacrifices, je ne les regarderai pas; je veux les exterminer par l’épée, la famine et la peste.”
13 And I said: Ah, ah, ah, O Lord God, the prophets say to them: You shall not see the sword, and there shall be no famine among you, but he will give you true peace in this place.	13 Alors j’ai dit: “Ah, mon Seigneur Yahvé, regarde ce que leurs prophètes leur racontent: Ne craignez pas l’épée, vous ne connaîtrez pas la famine, je ne vous donnerai ici que paix et prospérité!”
14 And the Lord said to me: The prophets prophesy falsely in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, nor have I spoken to them: they prophesy unto you a lying vision, and divination and deceit, and the seduction of their own heart.	14 Et voici la réponse de Yahvé: “Ce sont des mensonges que prophétisent ces prophètes en mon nom. Je ne les ai pas envoyés, je ne leur ai rien demandé, je ne leur ai pas parlé. Ce sont des visions fausses et des révélations inventées, ce sont leurs rêves qu’ils vous prophétisent.
15 Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the prophets that prophecy in my name, whom I did not send, that say: Sword and famine shall not be in this land: By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.	15 “C’est pourquoi, voici ce que dit Yahvé contre ces prophètes qui prophétisent en son nom, alors qu’il ne les a pas envoyés: Ils disent que l’épée et la famine ne viendront pas sur ce pays? Eh bien, c’est par l’épée et par la famine que ces prophètes périront!
16 And the people to whom they prophecy, shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the fanmine and the sword, and there shall be none to bury them: they and their wives, their sons and their daughters, and I will pour out their wickedness upon them.	16 “Quant à ceux qui écoutent ces prophètes, eux aussi mourront par la famine et par l’épée, et leurs corps resteront sur le sol dans les rues de Jérusalem. Il n’y aura personne pour les enterrer, pas plus eux que leurs femmes, leurs fils ou leurs filles. C’est ainsi que je ferai retomber sur eux leur péché.
17 And thou shalt speak this word to them: Let my eyes shed down tears night and day, and let them not cease, because the virgin daughter of my people is afflicted with a great affliction, with an exceeding grievous evil.	17 “Tu leur diras encore cette parole: ‘Que mes yeux fassent couler des larmes abondantes, qu’ils ne s’arrêtent ni la nuit, ni le jour, car je vois la fille de mon peuple frappée d’un mal très grave, d’une plaie douloureuse.’ ”
18 If I go forth into the fields, behold the slain with the sword: and if I enter into the city, behold them that are consumed with famine. The prophet also and the priest are gone into a land which they knew not.	18 Si je vais dans les champs, je vois des gens transpercés par l’épée, si j’entre dans la ville, j’en vois d’autres torturés par la faim; les prophètes et les prêtres ont parcouru le pays et n’y comprennent rien.
19 Hast thou utterly cast away Juda, or hath thy soul abhorred Sion? why then hast thou struck us, so that there is no healing for us? we have looked for peace, and there is no good: and for the time of healing, and behold trouble.	19 As-tu donc rejeté Juda? Ton âme est-elle dégoûtée de Sion? Pourquoi nous as-tu frappés et n’y a-t-il pas de guérison pour nous? Nous attendions le salut et tout va mal, ce devait être la guérison, et c’est l’épouvante.
20 We acknowledge, O Lord, our wickedness, the iniquities of our fathers, because we have sinned against thee.	20 Ô Yahvé, nous reconnaissons notre faute et les dettes de nos pères: contre toi nous avons péché!
21 Give us not to be a reproach, for thy name's sake, and do not disgrace in us the throne of thy glory: remember, break not thy covenant with us.	21 Mais pense à ton Nom, ne brise pas tout, n’abandonne pas ton trône de gloire! Veille à ne pas rompre ton alliance avec nous!
22 Are there any among the graven things of the Gentiles that can send rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou the Lord our God, whom we have looked for? for thou hast made all these things.	22 Parmi toutes les idoles des nations, en est-il une qui puisse faire pleuvoir? Est-ce le ciel qui donne les averses, n’est-ce pas toi, qui as fait toutes ces choses, toi en qui nous espérions?
