1 Now it is found in the descriptions of Jeremias the prophet, that he commanded them that went into captivity, to take the fire, as it hath been signified, and how he gave charge to them that were carried away into captivity.	1 Dans les archives on lit que le prophète Jérémie donna aux déportés l’ordre de prendre du feu comme on l’a déjà dit.
2 And how he gave them the law that they should not forget the commandments of the Lord, and that they should not err in their minds, seeing the idols of gold, and silver, and the ornaments of them.	2 On y voit aussi que le prophète recommanda aux déportés de ne pas oublier les commandements du Seigneur et de ne pas se laisser séduire quand ils verraient des statues d’or et d’argent ornées et habillées.
3 And with other such like speeches, he exhorted them that they would not remove the law from their heart.	3 De mille manières il leur recommanda de ne pas laisser la Loi s’éloigner de leur cœur.
4 It was also contained in the same writing, how the prophet, being warned by God, commanded that the tabernacle and the ark should accompany him, till he came forth to the mountain where Moses went up, and saw the inheritance of God.	4 Voici ce qu’on lit encore dans ces mêmes archives: sur un ordre de Dieu, le prophète prit avec lui la Tente et l’Arche, il monta sur la montagne où Moïse était monté et d’où il avait contemplé l’héritage de Dieu.
5 And when Jeremias came thither he found a hollow cave: and he carried in thither the tabernacle, and the ark, and the altar of incense, and so stopped the door.	5 En arrivant là, Jérémie trouva une habitation en forme de grotte, il y déposa la Tente et l’Arche avec l’autel des parfums et il en boucha l’entrée.
6 Then some of them that followed him, came up to mark the place: but they could not And it.	6 Quelques-uns de ses compagnons vinrent ensuite pour marquer le chemin avec des repères, mais ils ne purent le retrouver.
7 And when Jeremias perceived it, he blamed them, saying: The place shall be unknown, till God gather together the congregation of the people, and receive them to mercy.	7 Lorsque Jérémie l’apprit, il leur fit des reproches: “Ce lieu, leur dit-il, doit rester caché jusqu’au jour où Dieu rassemblera son peuple et lui fera miséricorde.
8 And then the Lord will shew these things, and the majesty of the Lord shall appear, and there shall be a cloud as it was also shewed to Moses, and he shewed it when Solomon prayed that the place might be sanctified to the great God.	8 Alors le Seigneur révélera tout cela, la Gloire du Seigneur apparaîtra avec la nuée comme elle est apparue au temps de Moïse, ou quand Salomon prononça la prière pour la consécration solennelle du Temple.
9 For he treated wisdom in a magnificent manner: and like a wise man, he offered the sacrifice of the dedication, and of the finishing of the temple.	9 “À propos du sacrifice que ce roi plein de sagesse offrit pour la dédicace et l’achèvement du Temple on lit encore ceci dans ces écrits:
10 And as Moses prayed to the Lord and fire came down from heaven, and consumed the holocaust: so Solomon also prayed, and fire came down from heaven and consumed the holocaust.	10 tout comme Moïse avait prié le Seigneur et un feu tombé du ciel avait consumé la victime, de même à la prière de Salomon le feu descendit et consuma les holocaustes.
11 And Moses said: Because the sin offering was not eaten, it was consumed.	11 Moïse l’avait dit: ‘Parce que la victime pour le péché n’a pas été mangée, elle a été consumée.’
12 So Solomon also celebrated the dedication eight days.	12 Ce fut pareil lorsque Salomon célébra les huit jours de fête de la Dédicace.
13 And these same things were set down in the memoirs and commentaries of Nehemias: and how he made a library, and gathered together out of the countries, the books both of the prophets, and of David, and the epistles of the kings. and concerning the holy gifts.	13 “Tout ceci était raconté dans les archives et dans les mémoires du temps de Néhémie. On y apprend encore que Néhémie fonda une bibliothèque et y rassembla les livres concernant les rois et les prophètes, les livres de David et les instructions des rois à propos des sacrifices.
14 And in like manner Judas also gathered together all such things as were lost by the war we had, and they are in our possession.	14 De même Judas vient de rassembler tous les livres qui avaient été dispersés pendant la guerre que nous avons connue; ils sont entre nos mains.
15 Wherefore if you want these things, send some that may fetch them to you.	15 Si donc vous avez besoin de ces livres, envoyez-nous des messagers qui vous les porteront.
16 As we are then about to celebrate the purification, we have written unto you: and you shall do well, if you keep the same days.	16 “Nous vous envoyons cette lettre alors que nous allons célébrer la fête de la Purification: vous ferez bien de célébrer ces jours avec nous.
17 And we hope that God who hath delivered his people, and hath rendered to all the inheritance, and the kingdom, and the priesthood, and the sanctuary,	17 Dieu a délivré tout son peuple; il a rendu à tous l’héritage, faisant d’eux un royaume, un sacerdoce et un peuple saint,
18 As he promised in the law, will shortly have mercy upon us, and will gather us together from every land under heaven into the holy place.	18 comme il l’a dit dans la Loi. Nous espérons qu’il aura bientôt pitié de nous et qu’il nous rassemblera de toutes les nations qui sont sous le ciel dans le Lieu Saint. Il nous a en effet arrachés à de grands malheurs et a purifié le Temple.”
19 For he hath delivered us out of great perils, and hath cleansed the place.	19 L’histoire de Judas Maccabée et de ses frères, la purification du Temple sublime, la dédicace de l’autel,
20 Now as concerning Judas Machabeus. and his brethren, and the purification of the great temple, and the dedication o the altar:	20 les guerres contre Antiocus Épiphane et son fils Eupator,
21 As also the wars against Antioch the Illustrious, and his son Eupator:	21 les manifestations célestes qui ont eu lieu en faveur de ceux qui luttaient héroïquement pour le Judaïsme - car malgré leur petit nombre ils ont reconquis toute la région et mis en fuite les armées barbares,
22 And the manifestations that from heaven to them, that behaved themselves manfully on the behalf of the Jews, so that, being but a few, they made themselves masters of the whole country, and put to flight; the barbarous multitude :	22 ils ont repris le Temple célèbre dans tout l’univers, délivré la ville et rétabli les lois qu’on voulait abolir, lorsque le Seigneur toujours juste leur a été favorable -
23 And recovered again the most renowned temple in all the world, and delivered the city, and restored the laws that were abolished, the Lord with all clemency shewing mercy to them.	23 tout cela a été exposé par Jason de Cyrène en cinq livres que nous essaierons de résumer en un seul.
24 And all such things as have been comprised in five books by Jason of Cyrene, we have attempted to abridge in one book.	24 La documentation y est très abondante, il s’y trouve une grande quantité de chiffres, et nous mesurons la difficulté qu’éprouvent ceux qui veulent suivre dans tous leurs détails les récits de l’histoire.
25 For considering the multitude of books, and the difficulty that they find that desire to undertake the narrations of histories, because of the multitude of the matter,	25 C’est pourquoi nous avons eu le souci d’offrir un texte agréable à ceux qui se contentent d’une simple lecture, un texte pratique pour ceux qui aiment garder la mémoire des faits, un texte utile à tous sans distinction.
26 We have taken care for those indeed that are willing to read, that it might be a pleasure of mind: and for the studious, that they may more easily commit to memory: and that all that read might receive profit.	26 Cela n’a pas été pour nous une tâche facile que d’entreprendre ce résumé; nous y avons dépensé beaucoup de sueur et de veilles.
27 And as to ourselves indeed, in undertaking this work of abridging, we have taken in hand no easy task, yea rather a business full of watching and sweat.	27 C’était tout comme organiser un grand repas pour la satisfaction des invités. Nous aussi nous avons accepté ce fardeau pour rendre service à beaucoup de gens.
28 But as they that prepare a feast, and seek to satisfy the will of others: for the sake of many, we willingly undergo the labour.	28 Nous souhaitions rester dans le cadre d’un simple résumé et nous avons laissé à l’auteur le soin de traiter chaque chose en détail.
29 Leaving to the authors the exact handling of every particular, and as for ourselves, according to the plan proposed, studying to be brief.	29 Je pense que nous sommes un peu comme l’architecte d’une maison neuve qui doit avoir à l’esprit l’ensemble de la construction, alors que celui qui se charge des peintures et de la cire étudie ce qui convient le mieux pour la décoration.
30 For as the master builder of a new house must have care of the whole building: but he that taketh care to paint it, must seek out fit things for the adorning of it: so must it be judged for us.	30 Celui qui écrit l’histoire doit approfondir les questions, rendre compte de tout, étudier avec attention les détails,
31 For to collect all that is to be known, to put the discourse in order, and curiously to discuss every particular point, is the duty of the author of a history:	31 mais il faut accepter de celui qui résume, qu’il cherche d’abord à faire un texte bref, sans se laisser entraîner dans les détails du récit.
32 But to pursue brevity of speech, and to avoid nice declarations of things, is to be granted to him that maketh an abridgment.	32 Commençons donc ici notre récit, sans rien ajouter à ce qui est déjà dit, car ce serait ridicule d’être long dans la préface de l’ouvrage, et bref ensuite pour l’histoire elle-même.
33 Here then we will begin the narration: let this be enough by way of a preface: for it is a foolish thing to make a long prologue, and to be short in the story itself.
