1 And when Jethro the priest of Madian, the kinsman of Moses, had heard all the things that God had done to Moses, and to Israel his people, and that the Lord had brought forth Israel out of Egypt,	1 Ietro, sacerdote di Madian, suocero di Mosè, intese tutto quello che Dio aveva fatto a Mosè e ad Israele, suo popolo: come il Signore aveva fatto uscire Israele dall'Egitto.
2 He took Sephora the wife of Moses whom he had sent back:	2 Allora Ietro prese Zippora, moglie di Mosè, che prima egli aveva rinviata,
3 And her two sons, of whom one was called Gersam, his father saying: I have been a stranger in a foreign country.	3 con i suoi due figli; il nome di uno era Gherson, poiché aveva detto: "Sono stato ospite in terra straniera",
4 And the other Eliezer: For the God of my father, said he, is my helper, and hath delivered me from the sword of Pharao.	4 e il nome dell'altro Eliezer, perché: "Il Dio di mio padre è venuto in mio aiuto, e mi ha liberato dalla spada del faraone".
5 And Jethro the kinsman of Moses came with his sons and his wife, to Moses into the desert, where he was camped by the mountain of God.	5 Ietro, suocero di Mosè, venne da Mosè, con la moglie e i figli di lui, nel deserto dove era accampato, al monte di Dio.
6 And he sent word to Moses, saying: I Jethro thy kinsman come to thee, and thy wife, and thy two sons with her.	6 E fece dire a Mosè: "Sono io, Ietro, tuo suocero, che vengo a te con tua moglie, e i tuoi due figli".
7 And he went out to meet his kinsman, and worshipped and kissed him: and they saluted one another with words of peace. And when he was come into the tent,	7 Mosè uscì incontro a suo suocero, si prosternò e lo baciò. Si interrogarono vicendevolmente sulla salute ed entrarono nella tenda.
8 Moses told his kinsman all that the Lord had done to Pharao, and the Egyptians, in favour of Israel: and all the labour which had befallen them in the journey, and that the Lord had delivered them.	8 Mosè raccontò a suo suocero tutto quello che il Signore aveva fatto al faraone e all'Egitto per causa d'Israele, tutte le tribolazioni che avevano trovato nel cammino; dalle quali il Signore li aveva salvati.
9 And Jethro rejoiced for all the good things that the Lord had done to Israel, because he had delivered them out of the hands of the Egyptians.	9 Ietro si rallegrò per tutto il bene che il Signore aveva fatto a Israele, per averlo salvato dalla mano dell'Egitto.
10 And he said: Blessed is the Lord, who hath delivered you out of the hand of Pharao, and out of the hand of the Egyptians, who hath delivered his people out of the hand of Egypt.	10 Ietro disse: "Benedetto sia il Signore, che vi ha salvato dalla mano dell'Egitto e dalla mano del faraone: egli ha salvato il popolo dalla mano dell'Egitto.
11 Now I know that the Lord is great above all gods: because they dealt proudly against them.	11 Ora so che il Signore è il più grande di tutti gli dèi, per quanto ha fatto agli Egiziani che si comportarono con arroganza contro gli Ebrei".
12 So Jethro the kinsman of Moses offered holocausts and sacrifices to God: and Aaron and all the ancients of Israel came, to eat bread with them before God.	12 Poi Ietro, suocero di Mosè, offrì un olocausto e un sacrificio di comunione in onore di Dio, e venne Aronne con tutti gli anziani d'Israele a mangiare il cibo con il suocero di Mosè davanti a Dio.
13 And the next day Moses sat, to judge the people, who stood by Moses from morning until night.	13 Il giorno dopo Mosè si sedette per giudicare il popolo, e il popolo stette con Mosè dal mattino alla sera.
14 And when his kinsman had seen all things that he did among the people, he said: What is it that thou dost among the people? Why sittest thou alone, and all the people wait from morning till night.	14 Il suocero di Mosè vide tutto quello che egli faceva al popolo e disse: "Che cosa è quello che fai al popolo? Perché siedi tu solo, e tutto il popolo sta con te dal mattino alla sera?".
15 And Moses answered him: The people come to me to seek the judgment of God.	15 Mosè disse al suo suocero: "Il popolo viene da me per consultare Dio.
16 And when any controversy falleth out among them, they come to me to judge between them, and to shew the precepts of God, and his laws.	16 Quando c'è qualcosa tra di loro vengono da me, e io giudico tra l'uno e l'altro: faccio conoscere i decreti di Dio e le sue leggi".
17 But he said: The thing thou dost is not good.	17 Il suocero di Mosè gli disse: "Non è bene quello che fai.
18 Thou are spent with foolish labour, both thou and this people that is with thee: the business is above thy strength, thou alone canst not bear it.	18 Ti esaurirai, sia tu che questo popolo che è con te, perché è troppo pesante per te: non puoi farlo da solo.
19 But hear my words and counsels, and God shall be with thee. Be thou to the people in those things that pertain to God, to bring their words to him:	19 Ora ascoltami: ti consiglio e Dio sia con te! Tu starai al posto del popolo davanti a Dio e porta tu a Dio le loro questioni.
20 And to shew the people the ceremonies and the manner of worshipping, and the way wherein they ought to walk, and the work that they ought to do.	20 Informali dei decreti e delle leggi e fa' loro conoscere il cammino da percorrere e quello che dovranno fare.
21 And provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, in whom there is truth, and that hate avarice, and appoint of them rulers of thousands, and of hundreds, and of fifties, and of tens.	21 Invece prenderai tra tutto il popolo uomini di virtù che temono Dio, uomini veritieri che odiano il guadagno, e li porrai su di loro come capi di migliaia, capi di centinaia, capi di cinquantine e capi di decine.
22 Who may judge the people at all times: and when any great matter soever shall fall out, let them refer it to thee, and let them judge the lesser matters only: that so it may be lighter for thee, the burden being shared out unto others.	22 Giudicheranno il popolo per tutto il tempo: ogni questione importante la porteranno a te, ma giudicheranno essi ogni questione piccola. Così alleggerisci te ed essi ti sollevano.
23 If thou dost this, thou shalt fulfil the commandment of God, and shalt be able to bear his precepts: and all this people shall return to their places with peace.	23 Se farai questo, e che Dio te lo ordini, potrai durarla, e anche tutto questo popolo rientrerà presso di sé in pace".
24 And when Moses heard this, he did all things that he had suggested unto him.	24 Mosè ascoltò la voce del suo suocero e fece quello che aveva detto:
25 And choosing able men out of all Israel, he appointed them rulers of the people, rulers over thousands, and over hundreds, and over fifties, and over tens.	25 Mosè scelse uomini di virtù da tutto Israele e li costituì come capi sul popolo, capi di migliaia, capi di centinaia, capi di cinquantine e capi di decine.
26 And they judged the people at all times: and whatsoever was of greater difficulty they referred to him, and they judged the easier cases only.	26 Essi giudicavano il popolo per tutto il tempo: le questioni importanti le portavano a Mosè, mentre essi stessi giudicavano tutte le questioni piccole.
27 And he let his kinsman depart: and he returned and went into his own country.	27 Poi Mosè congedò suo suocero, che se ne andò nella sua terra.
