Genesis 26

DOUAI-RHEIMS	JERUSALEM
1 And when a famine came in the land, after that barrenness which had happened in the days of Abraham, Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Palestines to Gerara.	1 Il y eut une famine dans le pays -- en plus de la première famine qui eut lieu du temps d'Abraham-- et Isaac se rendit à Gérar chez Abimélek, roi des Philistins.
2 And the Lord appeared to him and said: Go not down into Egypt, but stay in the land that I shall tell thee.	2 Yahvé lui apparut et dit: "Ne descends pas en Egypte; demeure au pays que je te dirai.
3 And sojourn in it, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee: for to thee and to thy seed I will give all these countries, to fulfill the oath which I swore to Abraham thy father.	3 Séjourne dans ce pays-ci, je serai avec toi et te bénirai. Car c'est à toi et à ta race que je donneraitous ces pays-ci et je tiendrai le serment que j'ai fait à ton père Abraham.
4 And I will multiply thy seed like the stars of heaven: and I will give to thy posterity all these countries: and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.	4 Je rendrai ta postérité nombreuse comme les étoiles du ciel, je lui donnerai tous ces pays et par tapostérité se béniront toutes les nations de la terre,
5 Because Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my precepts and commandments, and observed my ceremonies and laws.	5 en retour de l'obéissance d'Abraham, qui a gardé mes observances, mes commandements, mesrègles et mes lois."
6 So Isaac abode in Gerara.	6 Ainsi Isaac demeura à Gérar.
7 And when he was asked by the men of that place, concerning his wife, he answered: She is my sister; for he was afraid to confess that she was his wife, thinking lest perhaps they would like him because of her beauty.	7 Les gens du lieu l'interrogèrent sur sa femme et il répondit: "C'est ma sœur." Il eut peur de dire:"Ma femme", pensant: "Les gens du lieu me feront mourir à cause de Rébecca, car elle est belle."
8 And when very many days were passed, and he abode there, Abimelech king of the Palestines looking out through a window, saw him playing with Rebecca his wife.	8 Il était là depuis longtemps quand Abimélek, le roi des Philistins, regardant une fois par la fenêtre,vit Isaac qui caressait Rébecca, sa femme.
9 And calling for him, he said: It is evident she is thy wife: why didst thou feign her to be thy sister? He answered: I feared lest I should die for her sake.	9 Abimélek appela Isaac et dit: "Pour sûr, c'est ta femme!Comment as-tu pu dire: C'est ma sœur?"Isaac lui répondit:"Je me disais: je risque de mourir à cause d'elle."
10 And Abimelech said: Why hadst thou deceived us? Some man of the people might have lain with thy wife, and thou hadst brought upon us a great sin. And he commanded all the people, saying:	10 Abimélek reprit: "Qu'est-ce que tu nous as fait là? Un peu plus, quelqu'un du peuple couchait avecta femme et tu nous chargeais d'une faute!"
11 He that shall touch this man's wife, shall surely be put to death.	11 Alors Abimélek donna cet ordre à tout le peuple: "Quiconque touchera à cet homme et à safemme sera mis à mort."
12 And Isaac sowed in that land, and he found that same year a hundredfold: and the Lord blessed him.	12 Isaac fit des semailles dans ce pays et, cette année-là, il moissonna le centuple. Yahvé le bénit
13 And the man was enriched, and he went on prospering and increasing, till he became exceeding great:	13 et l'homme s'enrichit, il s'enrichit de plus en plus, jusqu'à devenir extrêmement riche.
14 And he had possessions of sheep and of herds, and a very great family. Wherefore the Palestines envying him,	14 Il avait des troupeaux de gros et de petit bétail et de nombreux serviteurs. Les Philistins endevinrent jaloux.
15 Stopped up at that time all the wells, that the servants of his father Abraham had digged, filling them up with earth:	15 Tous les puits que les serviteurs de son père avaient creusés, -- du temps de son père Abraham, --les Philistins le savaient bouchés et comblés de terre.
16 Insomuch that Abimelech himself said to Isaac: Depart from us, for thou art become much mightier than we.	16 Abimélek dit à Isaac: "Pars de chez nous, car tu es devenu beaucoup plus puissant que nous."
17 So he departed and came to the torrent of Gerara, to dwell there:	17 Isaac partit donc de là et campa dans la vallée de Gérar, où il s'établit.
18 And he digged again other wells, which the servants of his father Abraham had digged, and which, after his death, the Palestines had of old stopped up: and he called them by the same names by which his father before had called them.	18 Isaac creusa de nouveau les puits qu'avaient creusés les serviteurs de son père Abraham et que lesPhilistins avaient bouchés après la mort d'Abraham, et il leur donna les mêmes noms que son père leur avaitdonnés.
19 And they digged in the torrent, and found living water.	19 Les serviteurs d'Isaac creusèrent dans la vallée et ils trouvèrent là un puits d'eaux vives.
20 But there also the herdsmen of Gerara strove against the herdsmen of Isaac, saying: It is our water. Wherefore he called the name of the well, on occasion of that which had happened, Calumny.	20 Mais les bergers de Gérar entrèrent en dispute avec les bergers d'Isaac, disant: "L'eau est à nous!"Isaac nomma ce puits Eseq, parce qu'ils s'étaient querellés avec lui.
21 And they digged also another; and for that they quarreled likewise, and he called the name of it, Enmity.	21 Ils creusèrent un autre puits et il y eut encore une dispute à son propos; il le nomma Sitna.
22 Going forward from thence, he digged another well, for which they contended not: therefore he called the name thereof, Latitude, saying: Now hath the Lord given us room, and made us to increase upon the earth.	22 Alors il partit de là et creusa un autre puits, et il n'y eut pas de dispute à son propos; il le nommaRehobot et dit:"Maintenant Yahvé nous a donné le champ libre pour que nous prospérions dans le pays."
23 And he went up from that place to Bersabee,	23 De là il monta à Bersabée.
24 Where the Lord appeared to him that same might, saying: I am the God of Abraham thy father; do not fear, for I am with thee: I will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake.	24 Yahvé lui apparut cette nuit-là et dit: "Je suis le Dieu de ton père Abraham. Ne crains rien, car jesuis avec toi. Je te bénirai, je multiplierai ta postérité, en considération de mon serviteur Abraham."
25 And he built there an altar: and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent: and commanded his servants to dig a well.	25 Il bâtit là un autel et invoqua le nom de Yahvé. Il dressa là sa tente. Les serviteurs d'Isaac forèrentun puits.
26 To which place when Abimelech, and Ochozath his friend, and Phicol chief captain of his soldiers came from Gerara,	26 Abimélek vint le voir de Gérar, avec Ahuzzat son familier et Pikol le chef de son armée.
27 Isaac said to them: Why are ye come to me, a man whom you hate, and have thrust out from you?	27 Isaac leur dit: "Pourquoi venez-vous à moi, puisque vous me haïssez et que vous m'avez renvoyéde chez vous?"
28 And they answered: We saw that the Lord is with thee, and therefore we said: Let there be an oath between us, and let us make a covenant,	28 Ils répondirent: "Nous avons eu l'évidence que Yahvé était avec toi et nous avons dit: Qu'il y aitun serment entre nous et toi et concluons une alliance avec toi:
29 That thou do us no harm, as we on our part have touched nothing of thine, nor have done any thing to hurt thee: but with peace have sent thee away increased with the blessing of the Lord.	29 jure de ne nous faire aucun mal, puisque nous ne t'avons pas molesté, que nous ne t'avons fait quedu bien et t'avons laissé partir en paix. Maintenant, tu es un béni de Yahvé."
30 And he made them a feast, and after they had eaten and drunk:	30 Il leur prépara un festin, et ils mangèrent et burent.
31 Arising in the morning, they swore one to another: and Isaac sent them away peaceably to their own home.	31 Levés de bon matin, ils se firent un serment mutuel. Puis Isaac les congédia et ils le quittèrent enpaix.
32 And behold the same day the servants of Isaac came, telling him of a well which they had digged, and saying: We have found water.	32 Or ce fut ce jour-là que les serviteurs d'Isaac lui apportèrent des nouvelles du puits qu'ilscreusaient et ils lui dirent: "Nous avons trouvé l'eau!"
33 Whereupon he called it Abundance: and the name of the city was called Bersabee, even to this day.	33 Il appela le puits Sabée, d'où le nom de la ville, Bersabée, jusqu'à maintenant.
34 And Esau being forty years old, married wives, Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hethite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon of the same place.	34 Quand Esaü eut 40 ans, il prit pour femmes Yehudit, fille de Bééri le Hittite, et Basmat, filled'Elôn le Hittite.
35 And they both offended the mind of Isaac and Rebecca.	35 Elles furent un sujet d'amertume pour Isaac et pour Rébecca.
