Giosuè 9

DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 ORA, come tutti i re ch’erano di qua dal Giordano, nel monte, e nella pianura, e lungo tutto il lito del mar grande, fin dirimpetto al Libano, l’Hitteo, l’Amorreo, il Cananeo, il Ferizzeo, l’Hivveo, e il Gebuseo, ebbero intese queste cose,	1 Hearing these things, al the kings on this side of the Jordan, in the highlands and in the lowlands, allalong the coast of the Great Sea towards the Lebanon, Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites andJebusites, with one consent
2 si adunarono tutti insieme per guerreggiar con Giosuè, e con Israele, di pari consentimento	2 formed a fighting al iance against Joshua and Israel.
3 Ma gli abitanti di Gabaon, avendo udito ciò che Giosuè avea fatto a Gerico e ad Ai,	3 When the inhabitants of Gibeon learned how Joshua had treated Jericho and Ai, for their part,
4 si adoperarono anch’essi, ma con inganno; perciocchè andarono, e fecero provvisione di vittuaglia, e presero de’ sacchi logori, sopra i loro asini, e degli otri di vino logori, ch’erano stati schiantati e poi ricuciti;	4 they had recourse to a ruse. They provided themselves with supplies, and loaded their donkeys with oldsacks and with old wineskins which had burst and been sewn up again.
5 e de’ calzamenti logori, e risarciti ne’ piedi; e dei vestimenti logori indosso; e tutto il pane della lor provvisione era secco e mucido.	5 They put on patched old sandals and worn-out clothes. The only bread they took with them to eat wasdried up and crumbling.
6 E andarono a Giosuè, nel campo, in Ghilgal, e dissero a lui e a’ principali d’Israele: Noi siamo venuti di lontano paese; ora dunque fate patto con noi.	6 They came to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, and to him and the men of Israel they said, 'We come froma distant country, so make a treaty with us.'
7 E i principali d’Israele dissero a quegli Hivvei: Forse voi abitate nel mezzo di noi; come dunque faremo noi lega con voi?	7 The Israelites answered these Hivites, 'For all we know, you may live right among us. How then couldwe make a treaty with you?'
8 Ma essi dissero a Giosuè: Noi siamo tuoi servitori. E Giosuè disse loro: Chi siete voi, e donde venite?	8 They said to Joshua, 'We are your servants.' 'But who are you?' Joshua asked them, 'and where do youcome from?'
9 Ed essi gli dissero: I tuoi servitori son venuti di molto lontan paese, alla fama del Signore Iddio tuo; perciocchè noi abbiamo udita la sua fama, e tutto ciò ch’egli ha fatto in Egitto,	9 They said, 'Your servants have come from a country very far away, because of the fame of Yahwehyour God; for we have heard of him and of al that he did in Egypt,
10 e tutto ciò ch’egli ha fatto a’ due re degli Amorrei, ch’erano di là dal Giordano; a Sihon, re di Hesbon, e ad Og, re di Basan, che dimorava in Astarot.	10 and of al that he did to the two Amorite kings who used to live on the other side of the Jordan: Sihonking of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who used to live at Ashtaroth.
11 E i nostri Anziani, e tutti gli abitanti del nostro paese, ci hanno detto: Prendete in mano della provvisione per lo viaggio, e andate incontro a coloro, e dite loro: Noi siamo vostri servitori; fate dunque patto con noi.	11 Because of which, our elders and al the people of our country said to us, "Take provisions with you forthe journey; go and meet them and say to them: We are your servants; so make a treaty with us."
12 Quest’è il nostro pane; noi lo prendemmo caldo dalle case nostre per nostra provvisione, nel giorno che partimmo per venire a voi; ma ora, ecco egli è secco, ed è diventato mucido;	12 Here is our bread; it was warm when we took it from home to provide for our journey the day we setout to come to you, and now, you can see, it is dried up and crumbling.
13 e questi sono gli otri del vino, i quali noi empiemmo tutti nuovi; ed ecco, sono schiantati; e questi nostri vestimenti, e i nostri calzamenti, si son logorati per lo molto lungo viaggio.	13 These wineskins were new when we filled them; you can see, they have burst; and these clothes andsandals of ours are worn out from travelling such a long way.'
14 E que’ personaggi presero della lor provvisione, e non domandarono la bocca del Signore	14 The leaders sampled some of the food they offered, but they did not ask Yahweh's orders.
15 E Giosuè fece pace con loro, e patteggiò con loro, che li lascerebbe vivere; e i principali della raunanza lo giurarono loro.	15 Joshua made peace with them, and struck a treaty with them guaranteeing their lives, and the leadersof the community ratified it by oath.
16 Ma tre giorni appresso ch’ebbero fatto patto con loro, intesero ch’erano lor vicini, e che abitavano nel mezzo di loro.	16 Now it so happened that three days after the treaty had been made, it became known that they were aneighbouring people, living in Israel's region.
17 Perciocchè al terzo giorno, i figliuoli d’Israele si mossero, e vennero alle lor città, ch’erano Gabaon, e Chefira, e Beerot, e Chiriat-iearim.	17 The Israelites set out from camp, arriving in their towns three days later. Their towns were Gibeon,Chephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath-Jearim.
18 E i figliuoli d’Israele non li percossero; perciocchè i principali della raunanza aveano giurato loro per lo Signore Iddio d’Israele. E tutta la raunanza mormorò contro a’ principali	18 The Israelites did not attack them, since the leaders of the community had sworn to them by Yahweh,God of Israel, but the whole community muttered against the leaders.
19 E tutti i principali dissero a tutta la raunanza: Noi abbiamo loro giurato per lo Signore Iddio d’Israele; perciò ora non li possiam toccare.	19 The leaders, however, al said to the whole community, 'Since we have sworn an oath to them byYahweh, God of Israel, we cannot touch them now.
20 Facciamo loro questo, e lasciamoli vivere; acciocchè non vi sia indegnazione contro a noi, per cagione del giuramento che abbiamo loro fatto.	20 This is what we shal do with them: let them live, rather than bring retribution down on ourselves onaccount of the oath which we have sworn to them.'
21 Così i principali dissero loro, che si lascerebbero vivere; ma furono ordinati tagliatori di legne, e attignitori d’acqua, per tutta la raunanza; come i principali dissero loro	21 And the leaders went on, 'Let them live, but let them be wood-cutters and water-carriers for the wholecommunity.' Thus spoke the leaders.
22 Giosuè adunque li chiamò, e parlò loro, dicendo: Perchè ci avete voi ingannati, dicendo: Noi siamo d’un paese molto lontan da voi; e pur voi abitate nel mezzo di noi?	22 Joshua sent for the Gibeonites and asked them, 'Why did you deceive us by saying, "We live very faraway," when in fact you live right among us?
23 Ora dunque voi siete maledetti, e giammai non sarà che non vi sieno d’infra voi de’ servi, e de’ tagliatori di legne, e degli attignitori di acqua, per la Casa dell’Iddio mio.	23 From now on, you are accursed and wil for ever be serfs, as wood-cutters and water-carriers in thehouse of my God.'
24 Ed essi risposero a Giosuè, e dissero: Noi l’abbiam fatto, perciocchè era stato rapportato per cosa certa a’ tuoi servitori ciò che il Signore Iddio tuo avea comandato a Mosè, suo servitore, di darvi tutto il paese, e di distruggere d’innanzi a voi tutti gli abitanti del paese; laonde noi, temendo grandemente di voi per le nostre persone, abbiamo fatto questa cosa;	24 Their answer to Joshua was, 'We did it because your servants had been rightly told that Yahweh yourGod had ordered his servant Moses to give you the whole of this country and destroy al its inhabitants beforeyou; also because, as you advanced on us, we feared very greatly for our lives. That was why we did this.
25 e ora eccoci nelle tue mani; fa’ inverso noi come ti parrà buono e diritto di farci.	25 Now, as you see, we are at your mercy; do to us whatever you think good and right.'
26 Egli adunque fece loro così; e li scampò dalle mani de’ figliuoli d’Israele, sì che non li ammazzarono.	26 What he did with them was this: he saved them from the hand of the Israelites, who did not kil them.
27 E in quel giorno Giosuè li ordinò tagliatori di legne, e attignitori d’acqua, per la raunanza, e per l’Altare del Signore, in qualunque luogo egli eleggerebbe; il che dura fino al dì d’oggi	27 But that very day Joshua made them wood-cutters and water-carriers for the community and for thealtar of Yahweh, at the place which he would eventual y choose; and so they are today.
