Esdra 4

1 OR i nemici di Giuda e di Beniamino, avendo inteso che quelli ch’erano stati in cattività, riedificavano il Tempio al Signore Iddio d’Israele,	1 Now the enemies of Judah and of Benjamin heard that the sons of the captivity were building a temple to the Lord, the God of Israel.
2 si accostarono a Zorobabel, ed a’ capi delle famiglie paterne, e dissero loro: Lasciate che noi edifichiamo con voi; perciocchè noi desideriamo ricercar l’Iddio vostro, come voi; ed anche noi gli sacrifichiamo dal tempo di Esar-haddon, re degli Assiri, il qual ci ha fatti venir qua.	2 And so, drawing near to Zerubbabel and to the leaders of the fathers, they said to them: “Let us build with you, for we seek your God just as you do. Behold, we have immolated victims to him from the days of Esarhaddon, king of Assyria, who brought us here.”
3 Ma Zorobabel, e Iesua, e gli altri capi delle famiglie paterne d’Israele, risposero loro: Ei non vi si conviene di edificar la Casa all’Iddio nostro con noi; ma noi congiuntamente edificheremo la Casa al Signore Iddio d’Israele, siccome Ciro, re di Persia, ci ha comandato.	3 And Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the leaders of the fathers of Israel said to them: “It is not for you to build the house of our God with us. Instead, we alone shall build to the Lord our God, just as Cyrus, the king of the Persians, has commanded us.”
4 Ed il popolo del paese rendeva rimesse le mani del popolo di Giuda, e lo spaventava di fabbricare.	4 Therefore, it happened that the people of the land impeded the hands of the people of Judah, and they troubled them in building.
5 Oltre a ciò davano pensione a certi consiglieri contro a’ Giudei, per rompere il lor consiglio; e questo durò tutto il tempo di Ciro, re di Persia, e fino al regno di Dario, re di Persia	5 Then they hired counselors against them, so that they might argue against their plan during all the days of Cyrus, king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius, king of the Persians.
6 E sotto il regno di Assuero, al principio di esso, scrissero un’accusa contro agli abitanti di Giuda e di Gerusalemme.	6 And so, during the reign of Ahasuerus, at the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and of Jerusalem.
7 E poi al tempo di Artaserse, Bislam, Mitredat, Tabeel, e gli altri suoi colleghi, scrissero ad Artaserse, re di Persia; e la scrittura e la lingua della lettera era siriaca.	7 And so, in the days of Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Mithredath, and Tabeel, and the others who were in their council wrote to Artaxerxes, king of the Persians. Now the letter of accusation was written in Syriac, and was being read in the Syrian language.
8 Rehum, presidente del consiglio, e Simsai, segretario, scrissero una lettera al re Artaserse contro a Gerusalemme, di questo tenore.	8 Rehum, the commander, and Shimshai, the scribe, wrote one letter from Jerusalem to king Artaxerxes, in this manner:
9 Allora Rehum, presidente del consiglio, e Simsai, segretario, e gli altri lor colleghi, i Dinei, e gli Afarsatchei, i Tarpelei, gli Afarsei, gli Archevei, i Babiloni, i Susanchei, i Dehavei, gli Elamiti,	9 “Rehum, the commander, and Shimshai, the scribe, and the rest of their counselors, the judges, and rulers, the officials, those from Persia, from Erech, from Babylonia, from Susa, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,
10 e gli altri popoli, che il grande e glorioso Osnappar avea tramutati di stanza, e fatti abitar nella città di Samaria, e gli altri di di là dal fiume, ecc. scrissero al re Artaserse.	10 and the rest of the nations, whom the great and glorious Osnappar transferred and caused to live in the cities of Samaria and in the rest of the regions across the river in peace:
11 Questo è il tenor della lettera che gli mandarono. Al re Artaserse: i tuoi servitori, gli uomini di qua dal fiume, ecc.	11 to king Artaxerxes. (This is a copy of the letter, which they sent to him.) Your servants, the men who are across the river, send a greeting.
12 Il re sappia che i Giudei, che son venuti d’appresso a te a noi, son giunti in Gerusalemme; e che riedificano quella città ribella e malvagia; e rifanno interamente le mura, ed hanno già racconci i fondamenti.	12 Let it be known to the king, that the Jews, who ascended from you to us, have arrived in Jerusalem, a rebellious and most wicked city, which they are building, constructing its ramparts and repairing the walls.
13 Ora sappia il re, che se questa città è riedificata, e se le sue mura son rifatte, essi non pagheranno più tributo, nè taglia, nè gabella; e così quella città recherà danno alle entrate reali.	13 And now let be it known to the king, that if this city will have been built up, and its walls repaired, they will not pay tribute, nor tax, nor yearly revenues, and this loss will affect even the kings.
14 Ora, conciossiachè noi siamo salariati dal palazzo, e non sia cosa conveniente a noi il vedere che il re sia schernito, perciò abbiamo mandato a fare assapere la cosa al re.	14 But, remembering the salt that we have eaten in the palace, and because we are led to believe that it a crime to see the king harmed, we have therefore sent and reported to the king,
15 Acciocchè cerchi nel libro delle memorie de’ suoi predecessori; e tu vi troverai, e conoscerai che questa città è una città ribella, e dannosa ai re ed alle provincie; e che già ab antico vi si fanno dentro congiure; per la qual cagione fu distrutta.	15 so that you may search in the books of the histories of your fathers, and you may find written in the records, and you may know that this city is a rebellious city, and that it is harmful to the kings and the provinces, and that wars were incited within it from the days of antiquity. For which reason also, the city itself was destroyed.
16 Noi facciamo assapere al re, che, se questa città è riedificata, e le sue mura son rifatte, la parte de’ suoi stati ch’è di qua dal fiume, non sarà più sua	16 We report to the king that if this city will have been built, and its walls repaired, you will have no possession across the river.”
17 Il re mandò questa risposta: A Rehum, presidente del consiglio, ed a Simsai, segretario, ed agli altri lor colleghi, abitanti in Samaria; ed a tutti gli altri di di là dal fiume, salute ecc.	17 The king sent word to Rehum, the commander, and to Shimshai, the scribe, and to the rest who were in their council, to the inhabitants of Samaria, and to the others across the river, offering a greeting and peace.
18 La lettera, che voi ci avete mandata, è stata spiegata, e letta in presenza mia.	18 “The accusation, which you have sent to us, has been read aloud before me.
19 E per mio comandamento, si è cercato, e trovato che cotesta città già ab antico si solleva contro ai re; che vi si fanno ribellioni e congiure;	19 And it was commanded by me, and they searched and found that this city, from the days of antiquity, has rebelled against the kings, and that seditions and battles have been incited within it.
20 e che già vi furono re potenti in Gerusalemme, i quali signoreggiarono in tutto il paese ch’è di là dal fiume; e ch’erano loro pagati tributi, taglie e gabelle.	20 Then too, there have been very strong kings in Jerusalem, who also ruled over the entire region which is across the river. They have also taken tribute, and tax, and revenues.
21 Ora dunque provvedete di far cessare quelle genti, acciocchè cotesta città non si riedifichi, finchè da me sia altrimenti ordinato;	21 Now therefore, hear the sentence: Prohibit those men, so that this city may be not built, until perhaps there may be further orders from me.
22 e guardatevi di far fallo in questo; perchè si lascerebbe crescere il male in detrimento dei re?	22 See to it that you are not negligent in fulfilling this, otherwise, little by little, the evil may increase against the kings.”
23 Allora, tosto che il tenor delle lettere del re Artaserse fu letto in presenza di Rehum, e di Simsai, segretario, e de’ lor colleghi, essi andarono prestamente in Gerusalemme a’ Giudei, e li fecero cessare a mano armata.	23 And so a copy of the edict of king Artaxerxes was read before Rehum, the commander, and Shimshai, the scribe, and their counselors. And they went away hurriedly to Jerusalem, to the Jews. And they prohibited them by force and by strength.
24 In quel tempo fu tralasciata l’opera della Casa di Dio, che è in Gerusalemme, e restò così tralasciata fino all’anno secondo del regno di Dario, re di Persia	24 Then the work of the house of the Lord in Jerusalem was interrupted, and it did not resume until the second year of the reign of Darius, the king of the Persians.
