1 ORA, dopo queste cose, avvenne che il re de’ figliuoli di Ammon morì; ed Hanun, suo figliuolo, regnò in luogo suo.	1 Some time later the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun succeeded him as king.
2 E Davide disse: Io userò benignità inverso Hanun, figliuolo di Nahas come suo padre usò benignità inverso me. E Davide mandò a consolarlo di suo padre, per li suoi servitori. Ma, quando i servitori di Davide furono giunti nel paese de’ figliuoli di Ammon,	2 David thought, "I will be kind to Hanun, son of Nahash, as his father was kind to me." So David sent his servants with condolences to Hanun for the loss of his father. But when David's servants entered the country of the Ammonites,
3 i principali de’ figliuoli di Ammon dissero ad Hanun, lor signore: Parti che ciò, che Davide ti ha mandati de’ consolatori, sia per onorar tuo padre? non ti ha egli mandati i suoi servitori, per investigar la città, e per ispiarla, e per sovvertirla?	3 the Ammonite princes said to their lord Hanun: "Do you think that David is honoring your father by sending men with condolences? Is it not rather to explore the city, to spy on it, and to overthrow it, that David has sent his messengers to you?"
4 Hanun adunque prese i servitori di Davide, e fece lor radere mezza la barba, e tagliare i vestimenti per lo mezzo fino alle natiche; poi li rimandò.	4 Hanun, therefore, seized David's servants and, after shaving off half their beards and cutting away the lower halves of their garments at the buttocks, sent them away.
5 Ed essi fecero assaper la cosa al re Davide; ed egli mandò loro incontro; perciocchè quegli uomini erano grandemente confusi. E il re fece lor dire: Dimorate in Gerico, finchè la barba vi sia ricresciuta; poi ve ne ritornerete	5 When he was told of it, King David sent out word to them, since the men were quite ashamed. "Stay in Jericho until your beards grow," he said, "and then come back."
6 Or i figliuoli di Ammon, veggendo che si erano renduti abbominevoli a Davide, mandarono ad assoldare ventimila uomini a piè, de’ Siri di Bet-rehob, e dei Siri di Soba; e mille uomini del re di Maaca, e dodicimila di que’ di Tob.	6 In view of the offense they had given to David, the Ammonites sent for and hired twenty thousand Aramean foot soldiers from Beth-rehob and Zobah, as well as the king of Maacah with one thousand men, and twelve thousand men from Tob.
7 E Davide, avendo ciò inteso, mandò contro a loro Ioab, con tutto l’esercito della gente di valore.	7 On learning this, David sent out Joab with the entire levy of trained soldiers.
8 E gli Ammoniti uscirono in campagna, e ordinarono la battaglia in su l’entrata della porta della città, ed i Siri di Soba e di Rehob, e la gente di Tob e di Maaca, stavano da parte nella campagna.	8 The Ammonites came out and drew up in battle formation at the entrance of their city gate, while the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah remained apart in the open country.
9 E Ioab, veggendo che la battaglia era volta contro a lui, davanti e dietro, fece una cernita d’infra tutti gli uomini scelti d’Israele, ed ordinò quelli contro a’ Siri.	9 When Joab saw the battle lines drawn up against him, both front and rear, he made a selection from all the picked troops of Israel and arrayed them against the Arameans.
10 E diede a condurre il rimanente della gente ad Abisai, suo fratello, e l’ordinò contro a’ figliuoli di Ammon; e disse ad Abisai:	10 He placed the rest of the soldiers under the command of his brother Abishai, who arrayed them against the Ammonites.
11 Se i Siri mi superano, soccorrimi; se i figliuoli di Ammon altresì ti superano, io ti soccorrerò.	11 Joab said, "If the Arameans are stronger than I, you shall help me. But if the Ammonites are stronger than you, I will come to help you.
12 Fortificati, e portiamoci valorosamente per lo popolo nostro, e per le città del nostro Dio. E faccia il Signore ciò che gli parrà bene.	12 Be brave; let us prove our valor for the sake of our people and the cities of our God; the LORD will do what he judges best."
13 Allora Ioab, con la gente ch’egli avea seco, venne a battaglia contro a Siri; ed essi fuggirono d’innanzi a lui.	13 When Joab and the soldiers who were with him approached the Arameans for battle, they fled before him.
14 E gli Ammoniti, veggendo che i Siri erano fuggiti, fuggirono anch’essi d’innanzi ad Abisai, ed entrarono dentro alla città. E Ioab se ne ritornò indietro da’ figliuoli di Ammon, e venne in Gerusalemme	14 The Ammonites, seeing that the Arameans had fled, also fled from Abishai and withdrew into the city. Joab then ceased his attack on the Ammonites and returned to Jerusalem.
15 E i Siri, veggendo ch’erano stati sconfitti da Israele, si adunarono insieme.	15 Then the Arameans responded to their defeat by Israel with a full mustering of troops;
16 E Hadarezer mandò a far venire i Siri di là dal fiume; ed essi vennero in Helam; e Sobac, capo dell’esercito di Hadarezer, li conduceva.	16 Hadadezer sent for and enlisted Arameans from beyond the Euphrates. They came to Helam, with Shobach, general of Hadadezer's army, at their head.
17 Ed essendo ciò rapportato a Davide, egli adunò tutto Israele, e passò il Giordano, e venne in Helam. E i Siri ordinarono la battaglia contro a Davide, e combatterono con lui.	17 On receiving this news, David assembled all Israel, crossed the Jordan, and went to Helam. The Arameans drew up in formation against David and fought with him.
18 Ma i Siri fuggirono d’innanzi a Israele; e Davide uccise de’ Siri la gente di settecento carri, e quarantamila uomini a cavallo; percosse eziandio Sobac, capo del loro esercito; ed egli morì quivi.	18 But the Arameans gave way before Israel, and David's men killed seven hundred charioteers and forty thousand of the Aramean foot soldiers. Shobach, general of the army, was struck down and died on the field.
19 E tutti i re, vassalli di Hadarezer, veggendo ch’erano stati sconfitti da Israele, fecero pace con Israele, e furono loro soggetti. Ed i Siri temettero di più soccorrere i figliuoli di Ammon	19 All of Hadadezer's vassal kings, in view of their defeat by Israel, then made peace with the Israelites and became their subjects. And the Arameans were afraid to give further aid to the Ammonites.
