1 Ecco, davanti a lui ogni sicurezza viene meno, al solo vederlo si resta abbattuti.	1 Whoever might vainly hope to do so need only see him to be overthrown.
2 Nessuno è tanto audace da poterlo sfidare: chi mai può resistergli?	2 Is he not relentless when aroused; who then dares stand before him?
3 Chi mai lo ha assalito e ne è uscito illeso? Nessuno sotto ogni cielo.	3 Who has assailed him and come off safe-- Who under all the heavens?
4 Non passerò sotto silenzio la forza delle sue membra, né la sua potenza né la sua imponente struttura.	4 I need hardly mention his limbs, his strength, and the fitness of his armor.
5 Chi mai ha aperto il suo manto di pelle e nella sua doppia corazza chi è penetrato?	5 Who can strip off his outer garment, or penetrate his double corselet?
6 Chi mai ha aperto i battenti della sua bocca, attorno ai suoi denti terrificanti?	6 Who can force open the doors of his mouth, close to his terrible teeth?
7 Il suo dorso è formato da file di squame, saldate con tenace suggello:	7 Rows of scales are on his back, tightly sealed together;
8 l’una è così unita con l’altra che l’aria fra di esse non passa;	8 They are fitted each so close to the next that no space intervenes;
9 ciascuna aderisce a quella vicina, sono compatte e non possono staccarsi.	9 So joined one to another that they hold fast and cannot be parted.
10 Il suo starnuto irradia luce, i suoi occhi sono come le palpebre dell’aurora.	10 When he sneezes, light flashes forth; his eyes are like those of the dawn.
11 Dalla sua bocca erompono vampate, sprizzano scintille di fuoco.	11 Out of his mouth go forth firebrands; sparks of fire leap forth.
12 Dalle sue narici esce fumo come da caldaia infuocata e bollente.	12 From his nostrils issues steam, as from a seething pot or bowl.
13 Il suo fiato incendia carboni e dalla bocca gli escono fiamme.	13 His breath sets coals afire; a flame pours from his mouth.
14 Nel suo collo risiede la forza e innanzi a lui corre il terrore.	14 Strength abides in his neck, and terror leaps before him.
15 Compatta è la massa della sua carne, ben salda su di lui e non si muove.
16 Il suo cuore è duro come pietra, duro come la macina inferiore.	16 His heart is hard as stone; his flesh, as the lower millstone.
17 Quando si alza si spaventano gli dèi e per il terrore restano smarriti.	17 When he rises up, the mighty are afraid; the waves of the sea fall back.
18 La spada che lo affronta non penetra, né lancia né freccia né dardo.	18 Should the sword reach him, it will not avail; nor will the spear, nor the dart, nor the javelin.
19 Il ferro per lui è come paglia, il bronzo come legno tarlato.	19 He regards iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood.
20 Non lo mette in fuga la freccia, per lui le pietre della fionda sono come stoppia.	20 The arrow will not put him to flight; slingstones used against him are but straws.
21 Come stoppia è la mazza per lui e si fa beffe del sibilo del giavellotto.	21 Clubs he esteems as splinters; he laughs at the crash of the spear.
22 La sua pancia è fatta di cocci aguzzi e striscia sul fango come trebbia.	22 His belly is sharp as pottery fragments; he spreads like a threshing sledge upon the mire.
23 Fa ribollire come pentola il fondo marino, fa gorgogliare il mare come un vaso caldo di unguenti.	23 He makes the depths boil like a pot; the sea he churns like perfume in a kettle.
24 Dietro di sé produce una scia lucente e l’abisso appare canuto.	24 Behind him he leaves a shining path; you would think the deep had the hoary head of age.
25 Nessuno sulla terra è pari a lui, creato per non aver paura.	25 Upon the earth there is not his like, intrepid he was made.
26 Egli domina tutto ciò che superbo s’innalza, è sovrano su tutte le bestie feroci».	26 All, however lofty, fear him; he is king over all proud beasts.
