Jeremías 42

EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Entonces todos los jefes de las tropas, con Iojanán, hijo de Caréaj, Azarías, hijo de Maasías, y todo el pueblo, desde el más pequeño al más grande, acudieron	1 Then all the army leaders, Johanan, son of Kareah, Azariah, son of Hoshaiah, and all the people, high and low, approached the prophet Jeremiah
2 al profeta Jeremías y le dijeron: «¡Que nuestra súplica llegue hasta ti! Ruega al Señor, tu Dios, en favor de todo este resto, porque de los muchos que éramos hemos quedado unos pocos, como lo ves con tus propios ojos.	2 and said, "Grant our petition; pray for us to the LORD, your God, for all this remnant. We are now few who once were many, as you well see.
3 Que el Señor, tu Dios, nos indique el camino que debemos seguir y lo que debemos hacer».	3 Let the LORD, your God, show us what way we should take and what we should do."
4 El profeta Jeremías les dijo: «De acuerdo. Voy a rogar al Señor, su Dios, como ustedes dicen, y les comunicaré todo lo que el Señor les responda, sin ocultarle nada».	4 Very well! the prophet Jeremiah answered them: I will pray to the LORD, your God, as you desire; whatever the LORD answers you, I will tell you; I will withhold nothing from you.
5 Ellos dijeron a Jeremías: «Que el Señor sea un testigo veraz y fidedigno contra nosotros, si no obramos en todo conforme a la palabra que el Señor, tu Dios, te enviará para nosotros.	5 And they said to Jeremiah, "May the LORD be our witness: we will truly and faithfully follow all the instructions the LORD, your God, will send us.
6 Nos guste o no, oiremos la voz del Señor, nuestro Dios, para que nos vaya bien por haber obedecido la voz del Señor, nuestro Dios».	6 Whether it is pleasant or difficult, we will obey the command of the LORD, our God, to whom we are sending you, so that it will go well with us for obeying the command of the LORD, our God."
7 Al cabo de diez días, la palabra del Señor llegó a Jeremías.	7 Ten days passed before the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah.
8 El llamó a Iojanán, hijo de Caréaj, a todos los jefes de las tropas que estaban con él, y también a todo el pueblo, del más pequeño al más grande,	8 Then he called Johanan, son of Kareah, his army leaders, and all the people, high and low,
9 y les dijo: «Así habla el Señor, el Dios de Israel, a quien ustedes me enviaron para presentarle una súplica:	9 and said to them: Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to offer your prayer:
10 Si ustedes permanecen en este país, yo los edificaré y no los demoleré, los plantaré y no los arrancaré, porque me arrepiento del mal que les hice.	10 If you remain quietly in this land I will build you up, and not tear you down; I will plant you, not uproot you; for I regret the evil I have done you.
11 No teman al rey de Babilonia, del que ahora tienen miedo; no le teman –oráculo del Señor– porque yo estoy con ustedes para salvarlos y para librarlos de su mano.	11 Do not fear the king of Babylon, before whom you are now afraid; do not fear him, says the LORD, for I am with you to save you, to rescue you from his power.
12 Yo haré que ustedes encuentren compasión, y él se compadecerá de ustedes y los dejará habitar en el país.	12 I will grant you mercy, so that he will be sorry for you and let you return to your land.
13 Pero si ustedes, desoyendo la voz del Señor, su Dios, dicen: «No permaneceremos en este país»;	13 But if you disobey the voice of the LORD, your God, and decide not to remain in this land,
14 si dicen: «No, entraremos en el país de Egipto; allí no veremos guerra, no oiremos el sonido de la trompeta, ni estaremos hambrientos de pan; es allí donde queremos permanecer»,	14 saying, "No, we will go to Egypt, where we will see no more of war, hear the trumpet alarm no longer, nor hunger for bread; there we will live";
15 entonces, escuchen la palabra del Señor, ustedes, resto de Judá: Así habla el Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: Si ustedes pretenden a toda costa entrar en Egipto, para residir allí,	15 then listen to the word of the LORD, remnant of Judah: Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: If you are determined to go to Egypt, when you arrive there to stay,
16 la espada que ustedes temen los alcanzará allí, en Egipto, y el hambre que les da miedo se adherirá a ustedes allí, en Egipto, y morirán.	16 the sword you fear shall reach you in the land of Egypt; the hunger you dread shall cling to you no less in Egypt, and there you shall die.
17 Todos los que pretendan a toda costa entrar en Egipto para residir allí, morirán por la espada, el hambre y la peste; ninguno de ellos sobrevivirá ni escapará a la desgracia que atraeré sobre ellos.	17 All those men who determine to go to Egypt to stay, shall die by the sword, famine, and pestilence; not one shall survive or escape the evil that I will bring upon them.
18 Porque así habla el Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: Como se ha derramado mi ira y mi furor sobre los habitantes de Jerusalén, así se derramará sobre ustedes mi furor cuando entren en Egipto; ustedes se convertirán en imprecación, devastación, maldición e ignominia, y no volverán más a este lugar».	18 For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Just as my furious anger was poured out upon the citizens of Jerusalem, so shall my anger be poured out on you when you reach Egypt. You shall become an example of malediction and horror, a curse and a reproach, and you shall never see this place again.
19 Pero Jeremías dijo: «Esta es la palabra que el Señor les dirige, resto de Judá: «No entren en Egipto». Sepan bien que hoy yo les hago una solemne advertencia.	19 It is the LORD who has spoken to you, remnant of Judah; do not go to Egypt! You can never say that I did not warn you this day.
20 Ustedes se han perjudicado a sí mismos cuando me enviaron ante el Señor, su Dios, diciendo: «Ruega en favor nuestro al Señor, nuestro Dios; comunícanos todo lo que diga el Señor, nuestro Dios, y nosotros lo haremos».	20 At the cost of your lives you have deceived me, sending me to the LORD, your God, saying, "Pray for us to the LORD, our God; make known to us all that the LORD, our God, shall say, and we will do it."
21 Hoy se lo he comunicado a ustedes, pero ustedes no han oído la voz del Señor, su Dios, en nada de lo que él me envió a decirles.	21 Today I proclaim his message, but you obey the voice of the LORD, your God, in nothing that he has commissioned me to make known to you.
22 Y ahora pueden estar seguros de que morirán por la espada, el hambre y la peste, en el lugar donde quieren entrar para residir allí».	22 Have no doubt of this, you shall die by the sword, famine, and pestilence in the place where you wish to go and settle.
