EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 El que toca el betún se queda manchado, y el que trata con el orgulloso se vuelve igual a él.	1 Whoever touches pitch will be defiled, and anyone who associates with the proud wil come to be likethem.
2 No levantes una carga demasiado pesada, ni trates con uno más fuerte y más rico que tú: ¿puede el vaso de arcilla juntarse con la olla? Esta lo golpeará y aquel se romperá.	2 Do not try to carry a burden too heavy for you, do not associate with someone more powerful andwealthy than yourself. Why put the clay pot next to the iron cauldron? It wil only break when they bang againsteach other.
3 El rico agravia, y encima se envalentona; el pobre es agraviado, y encima pide disculpas.	3 The rich does wrong and takes a high line; the poor is wronged and has to beg for pardon.
4 Mientras le seas útil, te explotará, pero si no tienes nada, te abandonará.	4 If you are useful the rich will exploit you, if you go bankrupt he wil desert you.
5 Si posees algo, vivirá contigo y te despojará sin lástima.	5 Are you well off? - he wil live with you, he will clean you out without a single qualm.
6 Cuando te necesite, tratará de engañarte, te sonreirá y te dará esperanzas; te dirigirá hermosas palabras y te preguntará: «¿Qué te hace falta?».	6 Does he need you? - he will hoodwink you, smile at you and raise your hopes; he wil speak politely toyou and say, 'Is there anything you need?'
7 Te comprometerá con sus festejos hasta despojarte dos y tres veces, y al final se burlará de ti; después, cuando te vez, pasará de largo y meneará la cabeza delante de ti.	7 He will make you feel smal at his dinner parties and, having cleaned you out two or three times over,wil end by laughing at you. Afterwards, when he sees you, he will avoid you and shake his head about you.
8 Presta atención, para no dejarte engañar ni ser humillado por tu insensatez.	8 Take care you are not hoodwinked and thus humiliated through your own stupidity.
9 Cuando te invite un poderoso, quédate a distancia, y te invitará con más insistencia.	9 When an influential person invites you, show reluctance, and he will press his invitation all the more.
10 No te precipites, para no ser rechazado, ni te quedes muy lejos, para no ser olvidado.	10 Do not thrust yourself forward, in case you are pushed aside, but do not stand aloof, or you will beoverlooked.
11 No pretendas hablarle de igual a igual ni te fíes si conversa demasiado: él te pone a prueba con su locuacidad y te examina entre risa y risa.	11 Do not affect to treat him as an equal, do not trust his flow of words; since all this talking is expresslymeant to test you, under cover of geniality he wil be weighing you up.
12 El que no se modera al hablar, es un despiadado, y no te ahorrará ni los golpes ni las cadenas.	12 Pitiless is anyone who retails gossip; he wil not spare you either blows or chains.
13 Observa bien y presta mucha atención, porque estás caminando al borde de tu ruina.	13 Be wary, take very great care, because you are walking with your own downfal .
14 [Cuando oigas esto en tu sueño, despiértate; ama al Señor toda tu vida e invócalo para tu salvación.]	14
15 Todo animal quiere a su semejante y todo hombre, al de su misma condición;	15 Every living thing loves its own sort, and every man his fel ow.
16 todo ser viviente se une a los de su especie y el hombre, a uno semejante a él.	16 Every creature mixes with its kind, and human beings stick to their own sort.
17 ¿Qué tienen de común el lobo y el cordero? Así pasa con el pecador y el hombre bueno.	17 How can wolf and lamb agree? - Just so with sinner and devout.
18 ¿Qué paz puede haber entre la hiena y el perro? ¿Y qué paz entre el rico y el pobre?	18 What peace can there be between hyena and dog? And what peace between rich and poor?
19 Los asnos salvajes en el desierto son presa de los leones: así los pobres son pasto de los ricos.	19 Wild desert donkeys are the prey of lions; so too, the poor is the quarry of the rich.
20 La humillación es abominable para el soberbio: así el rico abomina del pobre.	20 The proud thinks humility abhorrent; so too, the rich abominates the poor.
21 Cuando un rico da un mal paso, sus amigos lo sostienen; cuando un pobre cae, sus amigos lo rechazan.	21 When the rich stumbles he is supported by friends; when the poor fal s, his friends push him away.
22 Si un rico resbala, muchos corren en su ayuda; dice cosas irrepetibles, y le dan la razón. Resbala el humilde, y lo critican; se expresa con sensatez, y nadie le hace caso.	22 When the rich slips, there are many hands to catch him, if he talks nonsense he is congratulated. Thepoor slips, and is blamed for it, he may talk good sense, but no room is made for him.
23 Si el rico habla, todos se callan y ponen sus palabras por las nubes; habla el pobre, y preguntan: «¿Quién es este?», y si tropieza, le dan un empujón.	23 The rich speaks and everyone stops talking, and then they praise his discourse to the skies. The poorspeaks and people say, 'Who is this?' and if he stumbles, they trip him up yet more.
24 Buena es la riqueza, si está libre de pecado, y mala es la pobreza a juicio del impío.	24 Wealth is good where there is no sin, poverty is evil, the godless say.
25 El corazón de un hombre lo hace cambiar de semblante, tanto para bien como para mal:	25 The heart moulds a person's expression whether for better or worse.
26 un rostro alegre refleja la dicha del corazón, y la invención de proverbios exige penosas reflexiones.	26 Happy heart, cheerful expression; but wearisome work, inventing proverbs.
