1 Ellos se dicen entre sí, razonando equivocadamente: «Breve y triste es nuestra vida, no hay remedio cuando el hombre llega a su fin ni se sabe de nadie que haya vuelto del Abismo.	1 they who said among themselves, thinking not aright: "Brief and troublous is our lifetime; neither is there any remedy for man's dying, nor is anyone known to have come back from the nether world.
2 Hemos nacido por obra del azar, y después será como si no hubiéramos existido. Nuestra respiración no es más que humo, y el pensamiento, una chispa que brota de los latidos del corazón;	2 For haphazard were we born, and hereafter we shall be as though we had not been; Because the breath in our nostrils is a smoke and reason is a spark at the beating of our hearts,
3 cuando esta se extinga, el cuerpo se reducirá a ceniza y el aliento se dispersará como una ráfaga de viento.	3 And when this is quenched, our body will be ashes and our spirit will be poured abroad like unresisting air.
4 Nuestro nombre será olvidado con el tiempo y nadie se acordará de nuestras obras; nuestra vida habrá pasado como una nube, sin dejar rastro, se disipará como la bruma, evaporada por los rayos del sol y agobiada por su calor.	4 Even our name will be forgotten in time, and no one will recall our deeds. So our life will pass away like the traces of a cloud, and will be dispersed like a mist pursued by the sun's rays and overpowered by its heat.
5 El tiempo de nuestra vida es una sombra fugaz y nuestro fin no puede ser retrasado: una vez puesto el sello, nadie vuelve sobre sus pasos.	5 For our lifetime is the passing of a shadow; and our dying cannot be deferred because it is fixed with a seal; and no one returns.
6 Vengan, entonces, y disfrutemos de los bienes presentes, gocemos de las criaturas con el ardor de la juventud.	6 Come, therefore, let us enjoy the good things that are real, and use the freshness of creation avidly.
7 ¡Embriaguémonos con vinos exquisitos y perfumes, que no se nos escape ninguna flor primaveral,	7 Let us have our fill of costly wine and perfumes, and let no springtime blossom pass us by;
8 coronémonos con capullos de rosas antes que se marchiten;	8 let us crown ourselves with rosebuds ere they wither.
9 que ninguno de nosotros falte a nuestra orgía, dejemos por todas partes señales de nuestra euforia, porque eso es lo que nos toca y esa es nuestra herencia!	9 Let no meadow be free from our wantonness; everywhere let us leave tokens of our rejoicing, for this our portion is, and this our lot.
10 Oprimamos al pobre, a pesar de que es justo, no tengamos compasión de la viuda ni respetemos al anciano encanecido por los años.	10 Let us oppress the needy just man; let us neither spare the widow nor revere the old man for his hair grown white with time.
11 Que nuestra fuerza sea la norma de la justicia, porque está visto que la debilidad no sirve para nada.	11 But let our strength be our norm of justice; for weakness proves itself useless.
12 Tendamos trampas al justo, porque nos molesta y se opone a nuestra manera de obrar; nos echa en cara las transgresiones a la Ley y nos reprocha las faltas contra la enseñanza recibida.	12 Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our doings, Reproaches us for transgressions of the law and charges us with violations of our training.
13 El se gloría de poseer el conocimiento de Dios y se llama a sí mismo hijo del Señor.	13 He professes to have knowledge of God and styles himself a child of the LORD.
14 Es un vivo reproche contra nuestra manera de pensar y su sola presencia nos resulta insoportable,	14 To us he is the censure of our thoughts; merely to see him is a hardship for us,
15 porque lleva una vida distinta de los demás y va por caminos muy diferentes.	15 Because his life is not like other men's, and different are his ways.
16 Nos considera como algo viciado y se aparta de nuestros caminos como de las inmundicias. El proclama dichosa la suerte final de los justos y se jacta de tener por padre a Dios.	16 He judges us debased; he holds aloof from our paths as from things impure. He calls blest the destiny of the just and boasts that God is his Father.
17 Veamos si sus palabras son verdaderas y comprobemos lo que le pasará al final.	17 Let us see whether his words be true; let us find out what will happen to him.
18 Porque si el justo es hijo de Dios, él lo protegerá y lo librará de las manos de sus enemigos.	18 For if the just one be the son of God, he will defend him and deliver him from the hand of his foes.
19 Pongámoslo a prueba con ultrajes y tormentos, para conocer su temple y probar su paciencia.	19 With revilement and torture let us put him to the test that we may have proof of his gentleness and try his patience.
20 Condenémoslo a una muerte infame, ya que él asegura que Dios lo visitará».	20 Let us condemn him to a shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take care of him."
21 Así razonan ellos, pero se equivocan, porque su malicia los ha enceguecido.	21 These were their thoughts, but they erred; for their wickedness blinded them,
22 No conocen los secretos de Dios, no esperan retribución por la santidad, ni valoran la recompensa de las almas puras.	22 And they knew not the hidden counsels of God; neither did they count on a recompense of holiness nor discern the innocent souls' reward.
23 Dios creó al hombre para que fuera incorruptible y lo hizo a imagen de su propia naturaleza,	23 For God formed man to be imperishable; the image of his own nature he made him.
24 pero por la envidia del demonio entró la muerte en el mundo, y los que pertenecen a él tienen que padecerla.	24 But by the envy of the devil, death entered the world, and they who are in his possession experience it.
