Éxodo 33

EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 El Señor dijo a Moisés: «Vete de aquí, tú y el pueblo que hiciste salir de Egipto, y sube al país que yo prometí con un juramento a Abraham, a Isaac y a Jacob, cuando les aseguré que daría esa tierra a sus descendientes.	1 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Leave, move on from here, you and the people whom you have broughthere from Egypt, to the country that I swore to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob that I would give to their descendants.
2 Yo enviaré un ángel delante de ti, y expulsaré a los cananeos, los amorreos, los hititas, los perizitas, los jivitas y los jebuseos,	2 I shal send an angel in front of you and drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, thePerizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites.
3 para que puedas entrar en la tierra que mana leche y miel. Pero yo no subiré en medio de ti, porque tú eres un pueblo obstinado, y tendría que exterminarte en el camino».	3 Move on towards a country flowing with milk and honey, but I myself shal not be going with you or Imight annihilate you on the way, for you are an obstinate people.'
4 Al oír esta severa advertencia, el pueblo estuvo de duelo y nadie se puso sus adornos.	4 On hearing these stern words the people went into mourning and no one wore his ornaments.
5 Luego el Señor dijo a Moisés: «Di a los israelitas: «Ustedes son un pueblo obstinado. Bastaría que yo subiera un solo instante en medio de ustedes, para tener que exterminarlos. Ahora quítense sus adornos, y después veré qué hago con ustedes».	5 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Say to the Israelites, "You are an obstinate people. If I were to go withyou even for a moment, I should annihilate you. So now take off your ornaments, and then I shal decide how todeal with you!" '
6 Entonces los israelitas se despojaron de sus adornos, desde el momento en que partieron del monte Horeb.	6 So, from Mount Horeb onwards, the Israelites stripped themselves of their ornaments.
7 Moisés tomó la Carpa. la instaló fuera del campamento, a una cierta distancia, y la llamó Carpa del Encuentro. Así, todo el que tenía que consultar al Señor debía dirigirse a la Carpa del Encuentro, que estaba fuera del campamento.	7 Moses used to take the Tent and pitch it outside the camp, far away from the camp. He called it theTent of Meeting. Anyone who wanted to consult Yahweh would go out to the Tent of Meeting, outside the camp.
8 Siempre que Moisés se dirigía hacia la Carpa, todo el pueblo se levantaba, se apostaba a la entrada de su propia carpa y seguía con la mirada a Moisés hasta que él entraba en ella.	8 Whenever Moses went out to the Tent, the people would al stand up and every man would stand atthe door of his tent and watch Moses until he went into the Tent.
9 Cuando Moisés entraba, la columna de nube bajaba y se detenía a la entrada de la Carpa del Encuentro, mientras el Señor conversaba con Moisés.	9 And whenever Moses went into the Tent, the pil ar of cloud would come down and station itself at theentrance to the Tent, while Yahweh spoke with Moses.
10 Al ver la columna de nube, todo el pueblo se levantaba, y luego cada uno se postraba a la entrada de su propia carpa.	10 The people could al see the pil ar of cloud stationed at the entrance to the Tent and the people wouldal stand up and bow low, each at the door of his tent.
11 El Señor conversaba con Moisés cara a cara, como lo hace un hombre con su amigo. Después Moisés regresaba al campamento, pero Josué –hijo de Nun, su joven ayudante– no se apartaba del interior de la Carpa.	11 Yahweh would talk to Moses face to face, as a man talks to his friend, and afterwards he would comeback to the camp, but the young man who was his servant, Joshua son of Nun, never left the inside of the Tent.
12 Moisés dijo al Señor: «Tú me ordenas que guíe a este pueblo, pero no me has indicado a quién enviarás conmigo, a pesar de que me dijiste: «Yo te conozco por tu nombre y te he brindado mi amistad».	12 Moses said to Yahweh, 'Look, you say to me, "Make the people move on," but you have not told mewhom you are going to send with me, although you have said, "I know you by name and you enjoy my favour."
13 Si me has brindado tu amistad, dame a conocer tus caminos, y yo te conoceré: así me habrás brindado realmente tu amistad. Ten presente que esta nación es tu pueblo».	13 If indeed I enjoy your favour, please show me your ways, so that I understand you and continue toenjoy your favour; consider too that this nation is your people.'
14 El Señor respondió: «Yo mismo iré contigo y te daré el descanso».	14 Yahweh then said, 'I myself shall go with you and I shall give you rest.'
15 Moisés agregó: «Si no vienes personalmente, no nos hagas subir de aquí	15 To which he said, 'If you do not come yourself, do not make us move on from here,
16 ¿Cómo se podrá conocer que yo y tu pueblo gozamos de tu amistad, si tú no vienes con nosotros? Así yo y tu pueblo nos distinguiremos de todos los otros pueblos que hay sobre la tierra».	16 for how can it be known that I and my people enjoy your favour, if not by your coming with us? By thiswe shal be marked out, I and your people, from al the peoples on the face of the earth.'
17 El Señor respondió a Moisés: «También haré lo que me acabas de decir, porque te he brindado mi amistad y te conozco por tu nombre».	17 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Again I shal do what you have asked, because you enjoy my favourand because I know you by name.'
18 Moisés dijo: «Por favor, muéstrame tu gloria».	18 He then said, 'Please show me your glory.'
19 El Señor le respondió: «Yo haré pasar junto a ti toda mi bondad y pronunciaré delante de ti el nombre del Señor, porque yo concedo mi favor a quien quiero concederlo y me compadezco de quien quiero compadecerme.	19 Yahweh said, 'I shal make al my goodness pass before you, and before you I shal pronounce thename Yahweh; and I am gracious to those to whom I am gracious and I take pity on those on whom I take pity.
20 Pero tú no puedes ver mi rostro, añadió, porque ningún hombre puede verme y seguir viviendo».	20 But my face', he said, 'you cannot see, for no human being can see me and survive.'
21 Luego el Señor le dijo: «Aquí a mi lado tienes un lugar. Tú estarás de pie sobre la roca,	21 Then Yahweh said, 'Here is a place near me. You will stand on the rock,
22 y cuando pase mi gloria, yo te pondré en la hendidura de la roca y te cubriré con mi mano hasta que haya pasado.	22 and when my glory passes by, I shal put you in a cleft of the rock and shield you with my hand until Ihave gone past.
23 Después retiraré mi mano y tú verás mis espaldas. Pero nadie puede ver mi rostro».	23 Then I shal take my hand away and you will see my back; but my face wil not be seen.'
