EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Roboam se dirigió a Siquem, porque allí había ido todo Israel para proclamarlo rey.	1 Rehoboam then went to Shechem, al Israel having come to Shechem to proclaim him king.
2 Cuando se enteró Jeroboam, hijo de Nebat –que estaba todavía en Egipto, adonde había huido del rey Salomón– se volvió a Egipto.	2 (As soon as Jeroboam son of Nebat heard the news -- he was stil in Egypt, where he had taken refugefrom King Solomon -- he returned from Egypt.
3 Lo mandaron llamar, y él se presentó con toda la asamblea de Israel. Entonces hablaron así a Roboam:	3 They now sent for him, and Jeroboam and the whole assembly of Israel came.) And they spoke asfol ows to Rehoboam,
4 «Tu padre hizo muy penoso nuestro yugo. Alivia tú ahora la dura servidumbre y el penoso yugo que él nos impuso, y te serviremos a ti».	4 'Your father laid a cruel yoke on us; if you wil lighten your father's cruel slavery, that heavy yoke whichhe imposed on us, we are wil ing to serve you.'
5 El les replicó: «Váyanse y vuelvan a verme dentro de tres días». Y el pueblo se retiró.	5 He said to them, 'Go away for three days and then come back to me.' And the people went away.
6 El rey Roboam fue a consultar a los ancianos que habían asistido a su padre Salomón, cuando este aún vivía, y les preguntó: «¿Qué respuesta me aconsejan dar a este pueblo?».	6 King Rehoboam then consulted the elders who had been in attendance on his father Solomon while hewas alive, and said, 'How do you advise me to answer this people?'
7 Ellos le hablaron así: «Si hoy te comportas como servidor de este pueblo, si te pones a su servicio y les respondes con buenas palabras, serán siempre tus servidores».	7 They replied, 'If you become the servant of this people today, and submit to them and give them a fairreply, then they wil remain your servants for ever.'
8 Pero él desechó el consejo que le habían dado los ancianos, y fue a consultar a los jóvenes que se habían criado con él y lo servían como asistentes.	8 But he rejected the advice given him by the elders and consulted the young men in attendance on him,who had grown up with him.
9 Les preguntó: «Y ustedes, ¿qué aconsejan? ¿Qué debemos responder a este pueblo que me ha dicho: «Alivia el yugo que nos impuso tu padre?».	9 He said, 'How do you advise us to answer these people who have been saying, "Lighten the yokewhich your father imposed on us!"? '
10 Los jóvenes que se habían criado con él le dijeron: «A ese pueblo que te ha dicho: «Tu padre nos impuso un yugo pesado, pero tú alívianos la carga», diles esto: «¡Mi dedo meñique es más grueso que la cintura de mi padre!	10 The young men who had grown up with him replied, 'This is the way to answer these people whohave been saying, "Your father made our yoke heavy, you must lighten it for us!" This is the right thing to say tothem, "My little finger is thicker than my father's loins.
11 Si mi padre los cargó con un yugo pesado, yo lo haré más pesado aún; si él los castigó con látigos, yo usaré lonjas con puntas de hierro».	11 Although my father laid a heavy yoke on you, I shall make it heavier stil . My father controlled you withthe whip, but I shall apply a spiked lash!" '
12 Al tercer día, Jeroboam y todo el pueblo comparecieron ante Roboam, según lo que había indicado el rey cuando dijo: «Vuelvan a verme al tercer día».	12 On the third day Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam in obedience to the king'sinstruction: 'Come back to me in three days' time.'
13 Pero el rey respondió al pueblo duramente; desechó el consejo que le habían dado los ancianos	13 And the king gave the people a harsh answer, rejecting the advice given him by the elders
14 y, siguiendo el consejo de los jóvenes, les habló así: «Mi padre les impuso un yugo pesado, y yo lo haré más pesado aún; mi padre los castigó con látigos, y yo usaré lonjas con puntas de hierro».	14 and speaking to them as the young men had recommended, 'My father made your yoke heavy, I shallmake it heavier stil ! My father control ed you with the whip, but I shall apply a spiked lash!'
15 Así el rey no escuchó al pueblo, porque ese era el medio de que se valía el Señor para cumplir la palabra que él había dicho a Jeroboam, hijo de Nebat, por boca de Ajías de Silo.	15 Thus the king refused to listen to the people, and this was brought about by Yahweh to fulfil thepromise which he had made through Ahijah of Shiloh to Jeroboam son of Nebat.
16 Y cuando todo Israel vio que el rey no los había escuchado, el pueblo le respondió: «¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David? ¡No tenemos herencia común con el hijo de Jesé! ¡A tus carpas, Israel! ¡Ahora, ocúpate de tu casa, David! Israel se fue a sus campamentos,	16 When al Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, the people answered the king thus: Whatshare have we in David? -No heritage in the son of Jesse! Away to your tents, Israel! Now look after your ownHouse, David! So Israel went home again.
17 pero Roboam siguió reinando sobre los israelitas que habitaban en las ciudades de Judá.	17 Rehoboam, however, reigned over those Israelites who lived in the towns of Judah.
18 El rey Roboam envió a Adoram, el encargado del reclutamiento, pero todos los israelitas lo mataron a pedradas. Y el mismo rey Roboam tuvo que subir precipitadamente a su carro y huir a Jerusalén.	18 When King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was in charge of forced labour, all Israel stoned him todeath, while King Rehoboam managed to mount his chariot and escape to Jerusalem.
19 Fue así como Israel se rebeló contra la casa de David hasta el día de hoy.	19 And Israel has remained in rebel ion against the House of David from that day to this.
20 Cuando todo Israel se enteró de que había vuelto Jeroboam, lo mandaron llamar a la asamblea y lo proclamaron rey de todo Israel. No hubo nadie que siguiera a la casa de David, fuera de la tribu de Judá.	20 When al Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they summoned him to the assembly and madehim king of al Israel; no one remained loyal to the House of David, except the tribe of Judah.
21 Mientras tanto, Roboam llegó a Jerusalén y convocó a toda la casa de Judá y a la tribu de Benjamín –ciento ochenta mil guerreros adiestrados– para ir a combatir contra la casa de Israel y restituir el reino a Roboam, hijo de Salomón.	21 When Rehoboam reached Jerusalem he mustered the whole House of Judah and the tribe ofBenjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand picked warriors, to fight the House of Israel and win back the kingdomfor Rehoboam son of Solomon.
22 Pero la palabra del Señor llegó a Semaías, un hombre de Dios, en estos términos.	22 But the word of Yahweh came to Shemaiah, man of God,
23 «Di a Roboam, hijo de Salomón, rey de Judá, y a toda la casa de Judá, a Benjamín y al resto del pueblo:	23 'Say this to Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, to the whole House of Judah, to Benjamin andto the rest of the people,
24 Así habla el Señor: No suban a combatir contra sus hermanos, los israelitas; vuelvan cada uno a su casa, porque esto ha sucedido por disposición mía». Ellos escucharon la palabra del Señor, y tomó cada uno el camino de regreso, conforme a la palabra del Señor.	24 "Yahweh says this: Do not go and make war on your brothers, the Israelites; let everyone go home,for this is my doing." ' They obeyed the command of Yahweh and turned back in accordance with his word.
25 Jeroboam, por su parte, fortificó Siquem, en la montaña de Efraím, y se estableció en ella. Luego salió de allí y fortificó Penuel.	25 Jeroboam fortified Shechem in the mountain country of Ephraim and made that his residence. Then,leaving there, he fortified Penuel.
26 Pero Jeroboam pensó: «Tal como se presentan las cosas, el reino podría volver a la casa de David.	26 Jeroboam thought to himself, 'As things are, the kingdom wil revert to the House of David.
27 Si este pueblo sube a ofrecer sacrificios a la Casa de Dios en Jerusalén, terminarán por ponerse de parte de Roboam, rey de Judá, su señor; entonces me matarán a mí y se volverán a Roboam, rey de Judá».	27 If this people continues to go up to the Temple of Yahweh in Jerusalem to offer sacrifices, thepeople's heart will turn back again to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah, and they wil put me to death.'
28 Y después de haber reflexionado, el rey fabricó dos terneros de oro y dijo al pueblo: «¡Basta ya de subir a Jerusalén! Aquí está tu Dios, Israel, el que te hizo subir del país de Egipto».	28 So the king thought this over and then made two golden calves; he said to the people, 'You havebeen going up to Jerusalem long enough. Here is your God, Israel, who brought you out of Egypt!'
29 Luego puso un ternero en Betel y el otro en Dan.	29 He set one up at Bethel,
30 Aquello fue una ocasión de pecado, y el pueblo iba delante de uno de ellos hasta Dan.	30 and the people went in procession in front of the other one al the way to Dan. In Israel this gave riseto sin, for the people went to Bethel to worship the one, and all the way to Dan to worship the other.
31 Jeroboam erigió templetes en los lugares altos, e instituyó sacerdotes de entre el común de la gente, que no eran hijos de Leví.	31 He set up shrines on the high places and appointed priests from ordinary families, who were not oflevitical descent.
32 Además, celebró una fiesta el día quince del octavo mes, como la fiesta que se celebraba en Judá, y subió al altar. Esto lo hizo en Betel, donde ofreció sacrificios a los terneros que había fabricado. En Betel estableció a los sacerdotes de los lugares altos que había erigido.	32 Jeroboam also instituted a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth of the month, like the feast keptin Judah, when he offered sacrifices on the altar. This he did at Bethel, offering sacrifices to the calves which hehad made and, at Bethel, instal ing the priests of the high places which he had set up.
33 El día quince del octavo mes –fecha que había elegido arbitrariamente –subió al altar que había levantado en Betel. Así celebró una fiesta para los israelitas, y subió al altar para quemar incienso.	33 On the fifteenth of the eighth month, the month which he had chosen deliberately, he offeredsacrifices on the altar which he had made at Bethel; he instituted a feast for the Israelites and himself went up tothe altar to burn the sacrifice.
