BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 El año 172 juntó el rey Demetrio su ejército y partió para Media para procurarse ayuda con que combatir a Trifón.	1 In the year 172, King Demetrius assembled his forces and marched into Media to raise help for thefight against Trypho.
2 Pero al enterarse Arsaces, rey de Persia y Media, de que Demetrio había entrado en su término, mandó a uno de sus generales para capturarle vivo.	2 When Arsaces king of Persia and Media heard that Demetrius had entered his territory, he sent one ofhis generals to capture him alive.
3 Partió éste y derrotó al ejército de Demetrio, le hizo prisionero y le llevó ante Arsaces que le puso en prisión.	3 The general defeated the army of Demetrius, seized him and brought him to Arsaces, who imprisonedhim.
4 El país de Judá gozó de paz durante todos los días de Simón. El procuró el bien a su nación, les fue grato su gobierno y su gloria en todo tiempo.	4 The country was at peace throughout the days of Simon. He sought the good of his nation and theywere wel pleased with his authority, as with his magnificence, throughout his life.
5 Además de toda su gloria, tomó a Joppe como puerto y se abrió paso a las islas del mar.	5 To crown his titles to glory, he took Joppa and made it a harbour, gaining access to the MediterraneanIsles.
6 Ensanchó las fronteras de su nación, se hizo dueño del país,	6 He enlarged the frontiers of his nation, keeping his mastery over the homeland,
7 y repatrió numerosos cautivos. Tomó Gázara, Bet Sur y la Ciudadela, la limpió de sus impurezas y no hubo quien le resistiera.	7 resettling a host of captives. He conquered Gezer, Beth-Zur and the Citadel, ridding them of everyimpurity, and no one could resist him.
8 Cultivaban en paz sus tierras; la tierra daba sus cosechas y los árboles del llano sus frutos.	8 The people farmed their land in peace; the land gave its produce, the trees of the plain their fruit.
9 Los ancianos se sentaban en las plazas, todos conversaban sobre el bienestar y los jóvenes vestían galas y armadura.	9 The elders sat at ease in the squares, all their talk was of their prosperity; the young men woresplendid armour.
10 Procuró bastimentos a las ciudades, las protegió con fortificaciones hasta llegar la fama de su gloria a los confines de la tierra.	10 He kept the towns supplied with provisions and furnished with fortifications, until his fame resoundedto the ends of the earth.
11 Estableció la paz en el país y gozó Israel de gran alegría.	11 He established peace in the land, and Israel knew great joy.
12 Se sentaba cada cual bajo su parra y su higuera y no había nadie que les inquietara.	12 Each man sat under his own vine and his own fig tree, and there was no one to make them afraid.
13 No quedó en el país quien les combatiera y fueron derrotados los reyes en aquellos días.	13 No enemy was left in the land to fight them, the very kings of those times had been crushed.
14 Dio apoyo a los humildes de su pueblo hizo desaparecer a todo impío y malvado. Observó fielmente la Ley,	14 He encouraged the afflicted members of his people, suppressing every wicked man and renegade.He strove to observe the Law,
15 dio gloria al Lugar Santo y multiplicó su ajuar.	15 and gave new splendour to the Temple, enriching it with many sacred vessels.
16 Cuando llegó a Roma y hasta Esparta la noticia de la muerte de Jonatán, lo sintieron mucho;	16 When it became known in Rome and as far as Sparta that Jonathan was dead, people were deeplygrieved.
17 pero cuando supieron que su hermano Simón le había sucedido en el sumo sacerdocio y había tomado el mando del país y sus ciudades,	17 But as soon as they heard that his brother Simon had succeeded him as high priest and was masterof the country and the cities in it,
18 le escribieron en planchas de bronce para renovar con él la amistad y la alianza que habían establecido con sus hermanos Judas y Jonatán.	18 they wrote to him on bronze tablets to renew the treaty of friendship and al iance which they hadmade with his brothers, Judas and Jonathan,
19 Se leyeron en Jerusalén ante la asamblea.	19 and the document was read out before the assembly in Jerusalem.
20 Esta es la copia de la carta enviada por los espartanos: «Los magistrados y la ciudad de los espartanos saludan al sumo sacerdote Simón, a los ancianos, a los sacerdotes y al resto del pueblo de los judíos, nuestros hermanos.	20 This is the copy of the letter sent by the Spartans: 'The rulers and the city of Sparta, to Simon thehigh priest and to the elders and priests and the rest of the people of the Jews, greetings.
21 Los embajadores enviados a nuestro pueblo nos han informado de vuestra gloria y honor y nos hemos alegrado con su venida.	21 'The ambassadors whom you sent to our people have informed us of your glory and prosperity, andwe are delighted with their visit.
22 Hemos registrado sus declaraciones entre las decisiones del pueblo en estos términos: Numenio, hijo de Antíoco, y Antípatros, hijo de Jasón, embajadores de los judíos, se nos han presentado para renovar la amistad con nosotros.	22 We have recorded their declarations in the minutes of our public assemblies, as fol ows, "Numeniusson of Antiochus, and Antipater son of Jason, ambassadors of the Jews, came to us to renew their friendshipwith us.
23 Ha sido del agrado del pueblo recibir con honor a estos personajes y depositar la copia de sus discursos en los archivos públicos para que el pueblo espartano conserve su recuerdo. Se ha sacado una copia de esto para el sumo sacerdote Simón».	23 And it was the people's pleasure to receive these personages with honour and to deposit a copy oftheir statements in the public archives, so that the people of Sparta might preserve a record of them. A copy wasalso made for Simon the high priest." '
24 Después, envió Simón a Roma a Numenio con un gran escudo de oro de mil minas de peso para confirmar la alianza con ellos.	24 After this, Simon sent Numenius to Rome as the bearer of a large golden shield weighing a thousandmina, to confirm the alliance with them.
25 Cuando estos hechos llegaron a conocimiento del pueblo, dijeron: «¿Cómo mostraremos nuestro reconocimiento a Simón y a sus hijos?	25 When these events were reported to our people, they said, 'What mark of appreciation shal we giveto Simon and his sons?
26 Porque se ha mostrado valiente, tanto él como sus hermanos y la casa de su padre, ha combatido y rechazado a los enemigos de Israel y le ha conseguido su libertad». Grabaron una inscripción en planchas de bronce y las fijaron en estelas en el monte Sión.	26 He stood firm, he and his brothers and his father's house: he fought off the enemies of Israel andsecured its freedom.' So they recorded an inscription on bronze tablets and set it up on pil ars on Mount Zion.

28 en la gran asamblea de los sacerdotes, del pueblo, de los príncipes de la nación y de los ancianos del país, se nos hizo saber lo siguiente:	28 'In Asaramel, in the Grand Assembly of priests and people, of princes of the nation and of elders ofthe country: 'We are acquainted with the matters fol owing:
29 «En los muchos combates que se dieron en nuestra región, Simón hijo de Matatías, sacerdote descendiente de los hijos de Yehoyarib, y sus hermanos se expusieron al peligro, hicieron frente a los enemigos de su nación para mantener en pie su Lugar Santo y la Ley y alcanzaron inmensa gloria para su nación.	29 'When there was almost incessant fighting in the country Simon, son of Mattathias, a priest of theline of Joarib, and his brothers courted danger and withstood their nation's enemies to safeguard the integrity oftheir sanctuary and of the Law, and so brought their nation great glory;
30 Jonatán realizó la unidad de la nación y llegó a ser sumo sacerdote suyo hasta que fue a reunirse con su pueblo.	30 'For when, Jonathan having ral ied his nation and become its high priest and having then beengathered to his ancestors,
31 Quisieron los enemigos de los judíos invadir el país para devastarlo y llevar su mano contra el Lugar Santo.	31 the enemy planned to invade the country, intending to devastate their territory and to lay hands ontheir sanctuary,
32 Pero entonces se levantó Simón para combatir por su nación y gastó mucha hacienda propia en armar las tropas de su nación y pagarles la soldada.	32 Simon next came forward to fight for his nation: spending much of his personal wealth on arming hisnation's fighting men and on providing their pay;
33 Fortificó las ciudades de Judea y Bet Sur, ciudad fronteriza de Judea, donde se encontraban antes las armas de los enemigos, y puso en ella una guarnición de guerreros judíos.	33 fortifying the towns of Judaea, as wel as Beth-Zur on the Judaean frontier where the enemy arsenalhad formerly been, and stationing in it a garrison of Jewish soldiers;
34 Fortificó Joppe, situada junto al mar, y Gázara, en los límites de Azoto, donde habitaban anteriormente los enemigos, y estableció en ella una población judía a la que proveyó de todo lo necesario para su sustento.	34 fortifying Joppa on the coast, and Gezer on the borders of Azotus, a place formerly inhabited by theenemy, founding a Jewish colony there, and providing the settlers with everything they needed to set them ontheir feet;
35 Viendo el pueblo la fidelidad de Simón y la gloria que procuraba alcanzar para su nación, le nombró su hegumeno y sumo sacerdote por todos los servicios que había prestado, por la justicia y fidelidad que había guardado a su nación y por sus esfuerzos de toda clase por exaltar a su pueblo.	35 'In consequence of which, the people, aware of Simon's loyalty and of the glory which he wasdetermined to win for his nation, have made him their ethnarch and high priest, for all his services and for theintegrity and loyalty which he has shown towards his nation, and for having by every means sought to enhancehis people's power;
36 En sus días se consiguió felizmente por su medio exterminar a los gentiles de su país y a los que se encontraban en la Ciudad de David, en Jerusalén, donde se habían hecho una Ciudadela desde la que hacían salidas y mancillaban los alrededores del Lugar Santo causando graves ultrajes a su santidad.	36 'It has fal en to him in his time to expel the foreigners from his country, including those in the City ofDavid in Jerusalem, who had converted it into a citadel for their own use, from which they would sal y out todefile the surroundings of the sanctuary and to violate its sacred character;
37 Estableció en ella guerreros judíos, la fortificó para defensa de la región y de la ciudad y dio mayor altura a las murallas de Jerusalén.	37 to station Jewish soldiers there instead for the security of the country and the city; and to heightenthe wal s of Jerusalem;
38 En consecuencia, el rey Demetrio le concedió el sumo sacerdocio,	38 'And since King Demetrius has heard that the Romans call the Jews their friends, al ies and brothers,
39 le contó en el número de sus amigos y le colmó de honores,	39 and that they have given an honourable reception to Simon's ambassadors, and, furthermore,
40 pues había sabido que los romanos llamaban a los judíos amigos, aliados y hermanos, que habían recibido con honor a los embajadores de Simón	40 that the Jews and priests are happy that Simon should, pending the advent of a genuine prophet, betheir ethnarch and high priest for life
41 y que a los judíos y a los sacerdotes les había parecido bien que fuese Simón su hegumeno y sumo sacerdote para siempre hasta que apareciera un profeta digno de fe,	41 therefore he has confirmed him in the high-priestly office, has raised him to the rank of Friend andhas showered great honours on him, also confirming him as their commander-in-chief,
42 y también que fuese su estratega, que estuviese a su cuidado designar los encargados de las obras del Lugar Santo, de la administración del país, de los armamentos y de las plazas fuertes	42 with the right to appoint officials to oversee the fabric of the sanctuary and to administer the country,munitions and fortresses;
43 (que estuviese a su cuidado el Lugar Santo), que todos le obedeciesen, que se redactasen en su nombre todos los documentos en el país, que vistiese de púrpura y llevase adornos de oro.	43 he is to have personal charge of the sanctuary, and to be obeyed by al ; al official documents in thecountry must be drawn up in his name; and he may assume the purple and may wear golden ornaments;
44 A nadie del pueblo ni de los sacerdotes le estará permitido rechazar ninguna de estas disposiciones, ni contradecir sus órdenes, ni convocar en el país asambleas sin contar con él, ni vestir de púrpura, ni llevar fíbula de oro.	44 'Furthermore, it is against the law for any member of the public or of the priesthood to contraveneany of these enactments or to contest his decisions, or to convene a meeting anywhere in the country without hispermission, or to assume the purple or wear the golden brooch;
45 Todo aquel que obre contrariamente a estas decisiones o anule alguna de ellas, será reo.	45 and anyone acting contrary to, or rejecting any article of, these enactments is liable to punishment;
46 El pueblo entero estuvo de acuerdo en conceder a Simón el derecho de obrar conforme a estas disposiciones,	46 'And since the people have unanimously agreed to grant Simon the right to act as aforesaid, and
47 y Simón aceptó y le pareció bien ejercer el sumo sacerdocio, ser estratega y etnarca de los judíos y sacerdotes y estar al frente de todos».	47 since Simon, for his part, has given his assent, and has consented to assume the high-priestly officeand to be commander-in-chief and ethnarch of the Jews and their priests, and to preside over al :
48 Decretaron que este documento se grabase en planchas de bronce, que se fijasen estas en el recinto del Lugar Santo, en lugar visible,	48 'So, be it now enacted: that this record be inscribed on bronze tablets and be erected at someconspicuous place within the precincts of the Temple,
49 y que se archivasen copias en el Tesoro a disposición de Simón y de sus hijos.	49 and that copies be deposited in the Treasury for Simon and his descendants.'
