1 Aquel día, se acordó Tobit del dinero que había dejado en depósito a Gabael, en Ragués de Media,	1 Therefore, when Tobit considered that his prayer was heard, so that he might be able to die, he called his son Tobias to him.
2 y se dijo para sí: «Yo, ya estoy deseando morirme. Así que voy a llamar a mi hijo Tobías y le voy a hablar de este dinero antes de morirme».	2 And he said to him: “My son, hear the words of my mouth, and set them, like a foundation, in your heart.
3 Llamó, pues, Tobit a su hijo, que se presentó ante él. Tobit le dijo: «Cuando yo muera, me darás una digna sepultura; honra a tu madre y no le des un disgusto en todos los días de su vida; haz lo que le agrade y no le causes tristeza por ningún motivo.	3 When God will receive my soul, bury my body. And you shall honor your mother, all the days of her life.
4 Acuérdate, hijo, de que ella pasó muchos trabajos por ti cuando te llevaba en su seno. Y cuando ella muera, sepúltata junto a mí, en el mismo sepulcro.	4 For you are obliged to be mindful of what great perils she suffered because of you in her womb.
5 «Acuérdate, hijo, del Señor todos los días y no quieras pecar ni transgredir sus mandamientos; practica la justicia todos los días de tu vida y no andes por caminos de injusticia,	5 But when she too will have completed the time of her life, bury her near me.
6 pues si te portas según verdad, tendrás éxito en todas tus cosas,	6 Yet, for all the days of your life, have God in your mind. And be careful that you never consent to sin, nor overlook the precepts of the Lord our God.
7 como todos los que practican la justicia. «Haz limosma con tus bienes; y al hacerlo, que tu ojo no tenga rencilla. No vuelvas la cara ante ningún pobre y Dios no apartará de ti su cara.	7 Give alms from your substance, and do not turn away your face from any pauper. For so it shall be that neither will the face of the Lord be turned away from you.
8 Regula tu limosma según la abundancia de tus bienes. Si tienes poco, da conforme a ese poco, pero nunca temas dar limosna,	8 In whatever way that you are able, so shall you be merciful.
9 porque así te atesoras una buena reserva para el día de la necesidad.	9 If you have much, distribute abundantly. If you have little, nevertheless strive to bestow a little freely.
10 Porque la limosna libra de la muerte e impide caer en las tinieblas.	10 For you store up for yourself a good reward for the day of necessity.
11 Don valioso es la limosma para cuantos la practican en presencia del Altísimo.	11 For almsgiving liberates from every sin and from death, and it will not suffer the soul to go into darkness.
12 «Guárdate, hijo, de toda impureza y, sobre todo, toma mujer del linaje de tus padres; no tomes mujer extraña que no pertenezca a la tribu de tu padre, porque somos descendientes de profetas. Recuerda, hijo, que desde siempre nuestros padres Noé, Abraham, Isaac y Jacob tomaron mujeres de entre sus hermanos y fueron bendecidos en sus hijos, de modo que su estirpe poseerá la tierra en herencia.	12 Almsgiving will be a great act of faith before the most high God, for all those who practice it.
13 Así pues, hijo, ama a tus hermanos; no tengas con tus hermanos, ni con los hijos y las hijas de tu pueblo, corazón soberbio, en orden a tomar para ti mujer de entre ellos; pues la soberbia acarrea la ruina y prolija inquietud; y la ociosidad, bajeza y extrema penuria; porque la ociosidad es madre de la indigencia.	13 Take care to keep yourself, my son, from all fornication, and, except for your wife, never permit yourself to know such an offense.
14 «No retengas el salario de los que trabajan para ti; dáselo al momento. Si sirves a Dios serás recompensado. Pon cuidado, hijo, en todas tus acciones y muéstrate educado en toda tu conducta.	14 Never permit arrogance to rule in your mind or in your words. For in it, all perdition had its beginning.
15 No hagas a nadie lo que no quieras que te hagan. No bebas vino hasta emborracharte y no hagas de la embriaguez tu compañera de camino.	15 And whoever has done any kind of work for you, immediately pay him his wages, and do not let the wages of your hired hand remain with you at all.
16 «Da de tu pan al hambriento y de tus vestidos al desnudo. Haz limosna de todo cuanto te sobra; y no tenga rencilla tu ojo cuando hagas limosna.	16 Whatever you would hate to have done to you by another, see that you never do so to another.
17 Esparce tu pan sobre la tumba de los justos, pero no lo des a los pecadores.	17 Eat your bread with the hungry and the needy, and cover the naked with your own garments.
18 «Busca el consejo de los prudentes y no desprecies ningún aviso saludable.	18 Set out your bread and your wine at the burial of a just man, and do not eat and drink from it with sinners.
19 Bendice al Señor Dios en toda circunstancia, pídele que sean rectos todos tus caminos y que llegen a buen fin todas tus sendas y proyectos. Pues no todas las gentes tienen consejo; es el Señor quien da todos los bienes y, cuando quiere, eleva o abata hasta lo profundo del Hades. Así, pues, hijo, recuerda estos mandamientos y no permitas que se borren de tu corazón.	19 Always seek the counsel of a wise man.
20 «También quiero decirte que dejé en depósito a Gabael, hijo de Gabrí, en Ragués de Media, diez talentos de plata.	20 Bless God at all times. And petition him that he direct your ways and that all your counsels may remain in him.
21 No debes preocuparte, hijo, porque seamos pobres. Muchos bienes posees si temes a Dios, huyes de todo pecado y haces lo que es bueno ante el Señor tu Dios».	21 And now, I reveal to you, my son, that I lent ten talents of silver, while you were still a young child, to Gabael, in Rages, a city of the Medes, and I have his written agreement with me.
	22 And so, inquire how you may travel to him and receive from him the aforementioned weight of silver, and return to him the written agreement.
	23 Do not be afraid, my son. We do indeed lead a poor life, but we will have many good things: if we fear God, and withdraw from all sin, and do what is good.”
