1 Frères, nous voulons vous informer d’une heureuse inspiration que Dieu a fait naître dans les Églises de Macédoine.	1 And so we are making known to you, brothers, the grace of God that has been given in the churches of Macedonia.
2 Au moment même où ils étaient sérieusement mis à l’épreuve, leur joie n’a pas diminué et leur profonde pauvreté n’a fait qu’enrichir leur totale disponibilité.	2 For within a great experience of tribulation, they have had an abundance of joy, and their profound poverty has only increased the richness of their simplicity.
3 Spontanément, selon leurs moyens et, je peux le dire, au-delà de leur moyens,	3 And I bear witness to them, that they were willing to accept what was in accord with their ability, and even what was beyond their ability.
4 ils nous ont rappelé avec beaucoup d’insistance cette initiative généreuse et ce partage qu’est le service d’aide à nos frères de Jérusalem.	4 For they were begging us, with great exhortation, for the grace and the communication of the ministry that is with the saints.
5 Ils ont dépassé notre attente, et Dieu a voulu qu’ils prennent l’initiative de s’offrir au Seigneur et à nous-mêmes.	5 And this is beyond what we had hoped, since they gave themselves, first of all to the Lord, and then also to us, through the will of God,
6 Nous avons donc demandé à Tite, puisqu’il a déjà traité avec vous, de mener à bien chez vous cette heureuse inspiration.	6 so much so that we petitioned Titus, that in the same manner as he had begun, he would also complete in you this same grace.
7 Puisque vous êtes doués pour tout: la foi, la parole, la connaissance, la présence active, - sans parler de l’amour que vous avez pour moi -, entrez également à fond dans cette attitude généreuse.	7 But, just as in all things you abound in faith and in word and in knowledge and in all solicitude, and even more so in your charity toward us, so also may you abound in this grace.
8 Ce n’est pas un ordre que je vous donne; mais je profite de l’empressement des autres pour mettre à l’épreuve le sérieux de votre amour.	8 I am speaking, not commanding. But through the solicitude of others, I approve of the good character of your charity.
9 Vous savez ce qu’a été la générosité de notre Seigneur Jésus Christ. Lui qui était riche, il s’est fait pauvre pour vous, pour que vous soyez riches au prix de sa pauvreté.	9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, he became poor for your sakes, so that through his poverty, you might become rich.
10 Et je vous fais une remarque: vous ne pouvez faire autrement puisque c’est vous qui avez commencé et même qui avez pris la décision l’an passé.	10 And about this, I give my counsel. For this is useful to those of you who, only a year earlier, had just begun to act, or even to be willing to act.
11 Maintenant il faut passer aux actes; quand on a décidé avec enthousiasme, on doit réaliser selon ses moyens.	11 So, truly now, accomplish this in deed, so that, in the same manner as your willing mind is prompted, you may also act, out of that which you have.
12 Si l’enthousiasme est là, on sera remercié tenant compte de ce qu’on a et non de ce qu’on n’a pas.	12 For when the will is prompted, it receives according to what that person has, not according to what that person does not have.
13 Il ne s’agit pas que les autres soient soulagés et vous dans la gêne,	13 And it is not that others should be relieved, while you are troubled, but that there should be an equality.
14 mais qu’il y ait égalité. Sur ce point, ce que vous avez en plus comblera ce qui leur manque, et d’un autre côté, ce dont ils sont riches comblera vos manques; ainsi vous serez à égalité.	14 In this present time, let your abundance supply their need, so that their abundance may also supply your need, in order that there may be an equality, just as it was written:
15 Il est écrit: Celui qui avait beaucoup n’avait pas de trop, et celui qui avait peu avait assez.	15 “He with more did not have too much; and he with less did not have too little.”
16 Remerciez Dieu de ce qu’il a donné à Tite le même intérêt à votre égard.	16 But thanks be to God, who has granted to the heart of Titus, this same solicitude for you.
17 Aussitôt reçue cette invitation, il est parti vers vous sans hésiter et très spontanément.	17 For certainly, he accepted the exhortation. But since he was more solicitous, he went to you of his own free will.
18 Avec lui nous avons envoyé un frère dont les mérites comme évangéliste sont reconnus par toutes les Églises.	18 And we have even sent with him a brother whose praise accompanies the Gospel throughout all the churches.
19 Ce n’est pas tout: les Églises l’ont désigné pour voyager avec nous et porter cette aide que nous entendons mener à bien, pour la gloire de Dieu autant que par conviction personnelle.	19 And not only that, but he was also chosen by the churches to be a companion for our sojourn in this grace, which is ministered by us with our determined will, to the glory of the Lord.
20 Nous l’avons disposé ainsi pour que personne n’ait de soupçons sur de telles sommes que nous devons administrer.	20 So let us avoid this, lest anyone disparage us over the abundance that is ministered by us.
21 Nous voulons que les choses soient correctes devant Dieu et devant les hommes.	21 For we provide for what is good, not only in the sight of God, but also in the sight of men.
22 C’est pourquoi nous avons aussi envoyé avec eux un frère dont nous avons éprouvé très souvent la disponibilité sur tous les plans; et maintenant il est encore mieux disposé car il a toute confiance en vous.	22 And we have also sent with them our brother, whom we have proven to be frequently solicitous in many matters. But now there is a greater solicitousness, which is greatly entrusted to you;
23 Voilà donc Tite, mon compagnon et mon collaborateur pour ce qui vous touche; et vous avez nos frères, apôtres des Églises, qui sont la gloire du Christ.	23 and whether it concerns Titus, who is a companion to me and a helper to you, or whether it concerns our brothers, the Apostles of the churches, it is to the glory of Christ.
24 Vous leur donnerez, et à toutes les Églises, la preuve de votre charité, et vous justifierez tout le bien que je dis de vous.	24 Therefore, in the sight of the churches, show them the proof of your charity and of our glorying about you.
