1 Le grand prêtre lui demanda: "Les choses sont-elles ainsi?”	1 Then the high priest said, “Are these things so?”
2 Il répondit: "Frères et pères, écoutez! Le Dieu de gloire est apparu à notre père Abraham quand il était en Mésopotamie, avant qu’il n’aille vivre à Harrân.	2 And Stephen said: “Noble brothers and fathers, listen. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he stayed in Haran.
3 Il lui a dit: Quitte ton pays et ta parenté et va vers la terre que je te donnerai.	3 And God said to him, ‘Depart from your country and from your kindred, and go into the land that I will show to you.’
4 C’est alors qu’il a quitté la Kaldée pour vivre à Harrân. “Après la mort de son père, Dieu l’a fait émigrer vers le pays où vous habitez à présent.	4 Then he went away from the land of the Chaldeans, and he lived at Haran. And later, after his father was dead, God brought him into this land, in which you now dwell.
5 Il ne lui a donné aucun domaine en ce pays, pas même de quoi poser son pied, mais il lui a promis cette terre: il devait la lui donner en propriété, comme à sa descendance après lui. Mais de fait il était sans enfants.	5 And he gave him no inheritance in it, not even the space of one step. But he promised to give it to him as a possession, and to his offspring after him, though he did not have a son.
6 “Dieu lui a parlé ainsi: Tes descendants vivront tels des émigrés sur une terre étrangère. Durant 400 ans ils seront maltraités et feront un travail d’esclaves.	6 Then God told him that his offspring would be a settler in a foreign land, and that they would subjugate them, and treat them badly, for four hundred years.
7 Mais, dit encore Dieu, je jugerai la nation qui les aura maintenus en servitude. Après quoi ils en sortiront et viendront m’adorer en ce lieu.”	7 ‘And the nation whom they will serve, I will judge,’ said the Lord. ‘And after these things, they shall depart and shall serve me in this place.’
8 “C’est à lui que Dieu a donné l’alliance de la circoncision. Après avoir engendré Isaac, il le circoncit le huitième jour; Isaac a fait de même pour Jacob, et Jacob pour les douze patriarches.	8 And he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And so he conceived Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day. And Isaac conceived Jacob, and Jacob, the twelve Patriarchs.
9 “Les patriarches devinrent jaloux de Joseph et le firent emmener en Égypte. Mais Dieu était avec lui:	9 And the Patriarchs, being jealous, sold Joseph into Egypt. But God was with him.
10 il le libéra de toutes ses épreuves et lui donna grâce et sagesse aux yeux de Pharaon, roi d’Égypte. Celui-ci fit de lui le gouverneur de l’Égypte et de toute sa propre maison.	10 And he rescued him from all his tribulations. And he gave him grace and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. And he appointed him as governor over Egypt and over all his house.
11 Survint une famine en Égypte et en Canaan; l’épreuve fut telle que nos pères ne trouvaient plus à manger.	11 Then a famine occurred in all of Egypt and Canaan, and a great tribulation. And our fathers did not find food.
12 Jacob apprit qu’il y avait du blé en Égypte et il y envoya nos pères une première fois.	12 But when Jacob had heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our fathers first.
13 C’est à la deuxième fois que Joseph se fit reconnaître de ses frères. Le Pharaon connut alors la race de Joseph.	13 And on the second occasion, Joseph was recognized by his brothers, and his ancestry was made manifest to Pharaoh.
14 Puis Joseph fit appeler son père Jacob et toute sa famille, au nombre de 75 personnes.	14 Then Joseph sent for and brought his father Jacob, with all his kindred, seventy-five souls.
15 Jacob descendit en Égypte et il y mourut, nos pères également.	15 And Jacob descended into Egypt, and he passed away, and so did our fathers.
16 On les fit ramener à Sichem et déposer dans le sépulcre qu’Abraham avait acheté à prix d’argent aux fils de Hamor, à Sichem.	16 And they crossed over into Shechem, and they were placed in the sepulcher which Abraham bought for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor, the son of Shechem.
17 “Le terme approchait pour la promesse que Dieu avait jurée à Abraham. Le peuple se développait et foisonnait en Égypte	17 And when the time of the Promise that God had revealed to Abraham drew near, the people increased and were multiplied in Egypt,
18 lorsque arriva un autre roi qui ne connaissait pas Joseph.	18 even until another king, who did not know Joseph, rose up in Egypt.
19 Il vit notre race d’un mauvais œil et fit tout pour nuire à nos pères, leur faisant abandonner leurs bébés pour qu’ils n’aient plus de descendance.	19 This one, encompassing our kindred, afflicted our fathers, so that they would expose their infants, lest they be kept alive.
20 C’est à ce moment que Moïse est né, celui qui était cher à Dieu. Durant trois mois il fut élevé dans la maison de son père,	20 In the same time, Moses was born. And he was in the grace of God, and he was nourished for three months in the house of his father.
21 et quand on l’exposa, il fut recueilli par la fille de Pharaon qui l’éleva comme son fils.	21 Then, having been abandoned, the daughter of Pharaoh took him in, and she raised him as her own son.
22 Moïse fut instruit de tout le savoir des Égyptiens: il était très doué pour la parole et pour l’action.	22 And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians. And he was mighty in his words and in his deeds.
23 “Il avait déjà passé l’âge de quarante ans lorsque l’idée lui vint de visiter ses frères, les fils d’Israël.	23 But when forty years of age were completed in him, it rose up in his heart that he should visit his brothers, the sons of Israel.
24 Voyant comment on maltraitait l’un d’eux, il voulut le défendre et rendit la pareille à celui qui abusait de lui: il fit périr l’Égyptien.	24 And when he had seen a certain one suffering injury, he defended him. And striking the Egyptian, he wrought a retribution for him who was enduring the injury.
25 “Ses frères allaient-ils comprendre que par sa main Dieu leur offrait le salut? Moïse le croyait. De fait ils ne comprirent pas.	25 Now he supposed that his brothers would understand that God would grant them salvation through his hand. But they did not understand it.
26 Le jour suivant il les vit qui se battaient entre eux et il essaya de ramener la paix: “Vous êtes frères!” leur dit-il, “pourquoi vous faire du mal l’un à l’autre?	26 So truly, on the following day, he appeared before those who were arguing, and he would have reconciled them in peace, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers. So why would you harm one another?’
27 Mais celui qui maltraitait son prochain s’y refusa: Qui t’a fait notre chef ou notre juge?	27 But he who was causing the injury to his neighbor rejected him, saying: ‘Who has appointed you as leader and judge over us?
28 Veux-tu me tuer comme tu as tué hier l’Égyptien?	28 Could it be that you want to kill me, in the same way that you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’
29 En entendant cela, Moïse prit la fuite et s’en alla demeurer au pays de Madian. Là il eut deux fils.	29 Then, at this word, Moses fled. And he became a foreigner in the land of Midian, where he produced two sons.
30 “Quarante ans déjà s’étaient écoulés lorsque, dans le désert du mont Sinaï, un ange lui apparut dans les flammes d’un buisson en feu.	30 And when forty years were completed, there appeared to him, in the desert of Mount Sinai, an Angel, in a flame of fire in a bush.
31 Moïse fut très intrigué par ce qu’il voyait. Comme il s’approchait pour mieux se rendre compte, il y eut une voix du Seigneur:	31 And upon seeing this, Moses was amazed at the sight. And as he drew near in order to gaze at it, the voice of the Lord came to him, saying:
32 Je suis le Dieu de tes pères, le Dieu d’Abraham, d’Isaac et de Jacob. Moïse ressentait une telle crainte qu’il n’osait plus regarder.	32 ‘I am the God of your fathers: the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ And Moses, being made to tremble, did not dare to look.
33 le Seigneur lui dit alors: Enlève les sandales que tu as aux pieds, car le lieu où tu te trouves est une terre sainte.	33 But the Lord said to him: ‘Loosen the shoes from your feet. For the place in which you stand is holy ground.
34 J’ai vu comment on maltraite mon peuple en Égypte, j’ai entendu leurs gémissements et je suis descendu pour les délivrer. Va, je te renvoie en Égypte.	34 Certainly, I have seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning. And so, I am coming down to free them. And now, go forth and I will send you into Egypt.’
35 “Ce Moïse qu’ils avaient renié, à qui ils avaient dit: “Qui t’a fait chef et juge?” c’était lui que Dieu leur envoyait comme chef et libérateur, avec l’appui de l’ange qui lui était apparu dans le buisson.	35 This Moses, whom they rejected by saying, ‘Who has appointed you as leader and judge?’ is the one God sent to be leader and redeemer, by the hand of the Angel who appeared to him in the bush.
36 C’est lui qui les a fait sortir, qui a opéré signes et prodiges au pays d’Égypte, à la Mer Rouge et au désert durant quarante années.	36 This man led them out, accomplishing signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, and at the Red Sea, and in the desert, for forty years.
37 C’est ce même Moïse qui a dit aux fils d’Israël: Le Seigneur fera se lever d’entre vos frères un prophète comme moi.	37 This is Moses, who said to the sons of Israel: ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your own brothers. You shall listen to him.’
38 C’est lui qui était avec nos pères à l’assemblée du désert, avec l’ange qui lui parlait sur le mont Sinaï; et il a reçu les paroles vivantes pour nous les donner.	38 This is he who was in the Church in the wilderness, with the Angel who was speaking to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. It is he who received the words of life to give to us.
39 “Nos pères ne voulaient pas l’écouter, ils se rebellaient et ne pensaient qu’à retourner en Égypte.	39 It is he whom our fathers were not willing to obey. Instead, they rejected him, and in their hearts they turned away toward Egypt,
40 Ils dirent même à Aaron: Fais-nous des dieux qui marchent à notre tête, car ce Moïse qui nous a fait sortir d’Égypte, nous ne savons pas ce qui lui est arrivé.	40 saying to Aaron: ‘Make gods for us, which may go before us. For this Moses, who led us away from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him.’
41 C’est alors qu’ils firent le veau: ils offrirent un sacrifice à l’idole et firent leur bonheur de l’œuvre de leurs mains.	41 And so they fashioned a calf in those days, and they offered sacrifices to an idol, and they rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
42 “Dieu détourna son visage et les laissa rendre un culte à l’armée du ciel, comme il est écrit au livre des Prophètes: M’avez-vous offert victimes et sacrifices durant les quarante années au désert, maison d’Israël?	42 Then God turned, and he handed them over, to subservience to the armies of heaven, just as it was written in the Book of the Prophets: ‘Did you not offer victims and sacrifices to me for forty years in the desert, O house of Israel?
43 Vous portiez la tente de Molok et l’étoile de Rafa votre dieu, les images que vous aviez faites pour vous incliner devant elles. C’est pourquoi je vous déménagerai au-delà de Babylone.	43 And yet you took up for yourselves the tabernacle of Moloch and the star of your god Rephan, figures which you yourselves formed in order to adore them. And so I will carry you away, beyond Babylon.’
44 “Nos pères avaient au désert la Tente du Témoignage; celui qui parlait à Moïse lui avait ordonné de la faire selon le modèle qu’il avait vu.	44 The tabernacle of the testimony was with our fathers in the desert, just as God ordained for them, speaking to Moses, so that he would make it according to the form that he had seen.
45 Après l’avoir reçue, nos pères l’introduisirent avec Josué quand ils dépossédèrent les nations que Dieu chassait devant eux. Rien ne changea jusqu’au temps de David.	45 But our fathers, receiving it, also brought it, with Joshua, into the land of the Gentiles, whom God expelled before the face of our fathers, even until the days of David,
46 David jouissait de la faveur de Dieu et voulut lui procurer un lieu de repos dans la maison de Jacob.	46 who found grace before God and who asked that he might obtain a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.
47 De fait, ce fut Salomon qui lui construisit ce Temple.	47 But it was Solomon who built a house for him.
48 “Mais le Très-Haut n’habite pas des constructions humaines; le prophète l’a dit:	48 Yet the Most High does not live in houses built by hands, just as he said through the prophet:
49 Le ciel est mon trône et la terre est mon marchepied; quelle maison pourriez-vous me construire? dit le Seigneur. Ai-je besoin d’un lieu de repos?	49 ‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house would you build for me? says the Lord. And which is my resting place?
50 N’est-ce pas ma main qui a fait tout cela?	50 Has not my hand made all these things?’
51 “Mais vraiment vous avez la nuque raide! La circoncision n’a pas touché vos cœurs ni vos oreilles, et toujours vous résistez à l’Esprit Saint. Vous faites exactement comme vos pères:	51 Stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you ever resist the Holy Spirit. Just as your fathers did, so also do you do.
52 quel est le prophète qu’ils n’ont pas persécuté? Ils ont tué ceux qui annonçaient la mort du Juste, et c’est vous maintenant qui l’avez livré et tué.	52 Which of the Prophets have your fathers not persecuted? And they killed those who foretold the advent of the Just One. And you have now become the betrayers and murderers of him.
53 Déjà vous aviez reçu une loi préparée par les anges, et vous ne l’avez pas observée!”	53 You received the law by the actions of Angels, and yet you have not kept it.”
54 En entendant ces paroles d’Étienne, ils frémissaient de rage contre lui et grinçaient des dents.	54 Then, upon hearing these things, they were deeply wounded in their hearts, and they gnashed their teeth at him.
55 C’est alors qu’Étienne fut rempli de l’Esprit Saint, il leva son regard vers le ciel et il vit Jésus siégeant à la droite de Dieu.	55 But he, being filled with the Holy Spirit, and gazing intently toward heaven, saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. And he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God.”
56 Il s’écria: "Je vois les cieux ouverts et le Fils de l’Homme placé à la droite de Dieu!”	56 Then they, crying out with a loud voice, blocked their ears and, with one accord, rushed violently toward him.
57 Ils se bouchèrent les oreilles et commencèrent à pousser de grands cris. Tous ensemble ils se jetèrent sur lui.	57 And driving him out, beyond the city, they stoned him. And witnesses placed their garments beside the feet of a youth, who was called Saul.
58 On le conduisit hors de la ville et on commença à lui jeter des pierres. Les témoins avaient déposé leurs vêtements aux pieds d’un jeune homme du nom de Saul.	58 And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out and said, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
59 Pendant qu’on le tuait à coups de pierres, Étienne faisait cette prière: "Seigneur Jésus, reçois mon esprit.”	59 Then, having been brought to his knees, he cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep in the Lord. And Saul was consenting to his murder.
60 Il se mit à genoux et cria d’une voix forte: "Seigneur, ne leur tiens pas compte de ce péché!” Après quoi il s’endormit dans le Seigneur.
