1 Qui appelle? n’est-ce pas la Sagesse? Cette voix, n’est-ce pas l’Intelligence?	1 Does not wisdom call out, and prudence bestow her voice?
2 Elle s’est postée sur la hauteur, au bord de la route, au carrefour des chemins.	2 At the summits and the tops of exalted places, standing above the ways, in the midst of the paths,
3 La voici qui appelle, juste aux portes de la ville, aux entrées les plus fréquentées:	3 beside the gates of the city, at the very doors, she speaks, saying:
4 “C’est à vous, les humains, que je m’adresse, je lance un appel aux fils d’Adam!	4 “O men, to you I call out, and my voice is to the sons of men.
5 Apprenez à juger, vous qui ne savez pas, et vous qui ne pensez à rien, devenez réfléchis!	5 O little ones, understand discernment. And you who are unwise, turn your souls.
6 Écoutez-moi, je dirai l’essentiel, rien ne sort de mes lèvres qui ne soit exact.	6 Listen, for I will speak about great things, and my lips will be opened, so as to foretell what is right.
7 C’est la vérité qui tombe de ma bouche, car je déteste les discours hypocrites.	7 My throat shall practice truth, and my lips shall detest the impious.
8 Toutes mes paroles sont sincères, pas une qui soit douteuse ou falsifiée.	8 All my words are just. There is no depravity in them, and no perversity.
9 Toutes sont exactes: un esprit ouvert s’en rend compte; elles sont justes: on le voit avec un peu de savoir.	9 They are upright to those who understand, and equitable to those who discover knowledge.
10 Faites vôtre ma discipline, plutôt que l’argent, choisissez la science et non pas l’or fin.	10 Accept my discipline, and not money. Choose the doctrine that is greater than gold.
11 La sagesse est plus utile que les perles, quel trésor pourrait l’égaler?	11 For wisdom is better than all that is most precious, and everything that is desirable cannot compare to her.
12 Moi, la Sagesse, j’habite avec l’art de juger, l’action réfléchie me compte entre ses amies.	12 I, wisdom, dwell in counsel, and I am inside learned thoughts.
13 (Détester le mal, c’est craindre Yahvé). Je déteste l’orgueil et l’arrogance, les chemins qui mènent au mal et l’hypocrisie.	13 The fear of the Lord hates evil. I detest arrogance, and pride, and every wicked way, and a mouth with a double tongue.
14 Mais chez moi l’on trouve bon sens et savoir-faire, l’intelligence ainsi que la puissance.	14 Counsel is mine, and equity. Prudence is mine. Strength is mine.
15 Par moi règnent les rois, et leurs ministres décident avec justice;	15 Through me, kings reign and legislators decree just conditions.
16 grâce à moi se maintiennent les princes, et les grands, et ceux qui gouvernent la terre.	16 Through me, princes rule and the powerful decree justice.
17 J’aime ceux qui m’aiment, ceux qui me cherchent me rencontrent.	17 I love those who love me. And those who stand watch for me until morning shall discover me.
18 Ils trouvent avec moi honneur et richesse, fortune durable et prospérité.	18 With me, are wealth and glory, superb riches and justice.
19 Mes fruits sont meilleurs que l’or fin, ce que j’apporte vaut bien plus que l’argent.	19 For my fruit is better than gold and precious stones, and my progeny better than choice silver.
20 Je fais route sur un chemin de droiture, d’où partent en tout sens les sentiers de la justice;	20 I walk in the way of justice, in the midst of the paths of judgment,
21 je vais, comblant de biens ceux qui m’aiment, et je fais pour eux le plein de leurs réserves.	21 so that I may enrich those who love me, and thus complete their treasures.
22 Yahvé m’a créée, - ce fut le début de son œuvre - avant toutes ses créatures, depuis toujours.	22 The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his ways, before he made anything, from the beginning.
23 Avant les siècles je fus formée, dès le commencement, bien avant la terre.	23 I was ordained from eternity, and out of antiquity, before the earth was formed.
24 Les océans n’étaient pas là quand je suis née, pas une des fontaines d’où jaillissent les mers.	24 The abyss did not yet exist, and I was already conceived; neither had the fountains of waters yet erupted.
25 Les montagnes n’étaient pas apparues, pas de collines encore quand je fus enfantée,	25 The mountains, with their great mass, had not yet been established. Before the hills, I was brought forth.
26 Yahvé n’avait pas fait la terre et la campagne, ni même la poussière primitive du monde.	26 Still he had not made the earth, and the rivers, and the poles of the globe of the earth.
27 J’étais là quand il mit les cieux en place, quand il traça sur l’océan le cercle des terres,	27 I was already present: when he prepared the heavens; when, with a certain law and a circuit, he fortified the abyss;
28 quand il mit d’office les nuées dans les hauteurs et régla au fond des mers le débit de leurs eaux,	28 when he made firm the sky above, and set free the fountains of waters;
29 quand il imposa à la mer ses frontières, une limite que ne franchiraient pas les flots. Alors qu’il posait les fondements de la terre,	29 when he encompassed the sea within its limits, and laid down a law for the waters, lest they transgress their limits; when he weighed the foundations of the earth.
30 j’étais à ses côtés comme une enfant. J’étais, jour après jour, tout son plaisir, et sans cesse je jouais en sa présence.	30 I was with him in composing all things. And I was delighted, throughout every day, by playing in his sight at all times,
31 Je joue sur ce monde, sur la terre qu’il a faite, et mon grand plaisir, c’est d’être chez les fils d’Adam.	31 playing in globe of the earth. And my delight was to be with the sons of men.
32 Vous donc, mes fils, écoutez-moi: heureux ceux qui suivent mes chemins!	32 Therefore, sons, hear me now. Blessed are those who preserve my ways.
33 Accueillez ma discipline et devenez des sages, ne la méprisez pas!	33 Listen to discipline, and become wise, and do not be willing to cast it aside.
34 Heureux celui qui m’écoute, qui chaque jour veille à ma porte et reste sur le seuil, en éveil.	34 Blessed is the man who listens to me, and who stands watch at my gates everyday, and who observes at the posts of my doors.
35 Car celui qui me trouve a trouvé la vie, les faveurs de Yahvé viendront sur lui;	35 He who finds me, finds life, and he will draw salvation from the Lord.
36 mais celui qui m’offense attente à sa vie, tous ceux qui me haïssent ont choisi la mort.”	36 But he who sins against me will wound his own soul. All who hate me love death.”
