SMITH VAN DYKE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 وصار قول الرب الى يونان بن أمتّاي قائلا	1 The word of Yahweh was addressed to Jonah son of Amittai:
2 قم اذهب الى نينوى المدينة العظيمة وناد عليها لانه قد صعد شرّهم امامي	2 'Up!' he said, 'Go to Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim to them that their wickedness has forced itselfupon me.'
3 فقام يونان ليهرب الى ترشيش من وجه الرب فنزل الى يافا ووجد سفينة ذاهبة الى ترشيش فدفع اجرتها ونزل فيها ليذهب معهم الى ترشيش من وجه الرب	3 Jonah set about running away from Yahweh, and going to Tarshish. He went down to Jaffa and found aship bound for Tarshish; he paid his fare and boarded it, to go with them to Tarshish, to get away from Yahweh.
4 فارسل الرب ريحا شديدة الى البحر فحدث نوء عظيم في البحر حتى كادت السفينة تنكسر.	4 But Yahweh threw a hurricane at the sea, and there was such a great storm at sea that the shipthreatened to break up.
5 فخاف الملاحون وصرخوا كل واحد الى الهه وطرحوا الامتعة التي في السفينة الى البحر ليخفّفوا عنهم. واما يونان فكان قد نزل الى جوف السفينة واضطجع ونام نوما ثقيلا.	5 The sailors took fright, and each of them called on his own god, and to lighten the ship they threw thecargo overboard. Jonah, however, had gone below, had lain down in the hold and was fast asleep,
6 فجاء اليه رئيس النوتية وقال له ما لك نائما. قم اصرخ الى الهك عسى ان يفتكر الاله فينا فلا نهلك.	6 when the boatswain went up to him and said, 'What do you mean by sleeping? Get up! Call on yourgod! Perhaps he wil spare us a thought and not leave us to die.'
7 وقال بعضهم لبعض هلم نلقي قرعا لنعرف بسبب من هذه البلية. فالقوا قرعا فوقعت القرعة على يونان	7 Then they said to each other, 'Come on, let us draw lots to find out who is to blame for bringing us thisbad luck.' So they cast lots, and the lot pointed to Jonah.
8 فقالوا له اخبرنا بسبب من هذه المصيبة علينا. ما هو عملك ومن اين اتيت. ما هي ارضك ومن اي شعب انت.	8 Then they said to him, 'Tel us, what is your business? Where do you come from? What is your country?What is your nationality?'
9 فقال لهم انا عبراني وانا خائف من الرب اله السماء الذي صنع البحر والبر.	9 He replied, 'I am a Hebrew, and I worship Yahweh, God of Heaven, who made both sea and dry land.'
10 فخاف الرجال خوفا عظيما وقالوا له لماذا فعلت هذا. فان الرجال عرفوا انه هارب من وجه الرب لانه اخبرهم.	10 The sailors were seized with terror at this and said, 'Why ever did you do this?' since they knew that hewas trying to escape from Yahweh, because he had told them so.
11 فقالوا له ماذا نصنع بك ليسكن البحر عنا. لان البحر كان يزداد اضطرابا.	11 They then said, 'What are we to do with you, to make the sea calm down for us?' For the sea wasgrowing rougher and rougher.
12 فقال لهم خذوني واطرحوني في البحر فيسكن البحر عنكم لانني عالم انه بسببي هذا النوء العظيم عليكم	12 He replied, 'Take me and throw me into the sea, and then it wil calm down for you. I know it is my faultthat this great storm has struck you.'
13 ولكن الرجال جذفوا ليرجّعوا السفينة الى البر فلم يستطيعوا لان البحر كان يزداد اضطرابا عليهم.	13 The sailors rowed hard in an effort to reach the shore, but in vain, since the sea was growing rougherand rougher.
14 فصرخوا الى الرب وقالوا آه يا رب لا نهلك من اجل نفس هذا الرجل ولا تجعل علينا دما بريئا لانك يا رب فعلت كما شئت.	14 So at last they cal ed on Yahweh and said, 'O, Yahweh, do not let us perish for the sake of this man'slife, and do not hold us responsible for causing an innocent man's death; for you, Yahweh, have acted as yousaw fit.'
15 ثم اخذوا يونان وطرحوه في البحر فوقف البحر عن هيجانه.	15 And taking hold of Jonah they threw him into the sea; and the sea stopped raging.
16 فخاف الرجال من الرب خوفا عظيما وذبحوا ذبيحة للرب ونذروا نذورا.	16 At this, the men were seized with dread of Yahweh; they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made vowsto him.
17 واما الرب فاعدّ حوتا عظيما ليبتلع يونان. فكان يونان في جوف الحوت ثلاثة ايام وثلاث ليال
