1 Ouvindo falar que Judas e seus aliados se achavam nas fronteiras da Samaria, resolveu Nicanor atacá-los com toda a segurança no dia do repouso sabático.	1 When Nicanor learned that Judas and his companions were in the territory of Samaria, he decided to attack them in all safety on the day of rest.
2 Os judeus, obrigados por ele a segui-lo, disseram-lhe: Não faças um massacre tão selvagem e tão bárbaro, mas respeita por teu lado o dia escolhido e especialmente santificado por aquele que tudo vê.	2 The Jews who were forced to follow him pleaded, "Do not massacre them in that way, like a savage barbarian, but show respect for the day which the All-seeing has exalted with holiness above all other days."
3 Mas este tríplice celerado perguntou se existia no céu um soberano que houvesse prescrito observar o dia de sábado.	3 At this the thrice-sinful wretch asked if there was a ruler in heaven who prescribed the keeping of the sabbath day.
4 Como eles respondessem: Foi o mesmo Senhor vivo, Todo-poderoso no céu, quem ordenou a celebração do sétimo dia,	4 When they replied that there was indeed such a ruler in heaven, the living LORD himself, who commanded the observance of the sabbath day,
5 o outro replicou: Também eu sou poderoso na terra e ordeno que se tomem as armas e se executem as ordens do rei. Todavia não pôde executar seu desígnio criminoso.	5 he said, "I, on my part, am ruler on earth, and my orders are that you take up arms and carry out the king's business." Nevertheless he did not succeed in carrying out his cruel plan.
6 Enquanto Nicanor, no auge de seu orgulho, decidia erigir um troféu com os despojos de Judas e seus companheiros,	6 In his utter boastfulness and arrogance Nicanor had determined to erect a public monument of victory over Judas and his men.
7 Macabeu, ao contrário, deixava-se levar por uma inteira confiança de que haveria de obter auxílio do Senhor.	7 But Maccabeus remained confident, fully convinced that he would receive help from the LORD.
8 Exortava os seus companheiros a que não temessem o ataque dos gentios, a que se lembrassem dos auxílios já obtidos do céu e a que esperassem, pois também agora o Todo-poderoso lhes concederia a vitória.	8 He urged his men not to fear the enemy, but mindful of the help they had received from Heaven in the past, to expect that now, too, victory would be given them by the Almighty.
9 Encorajou-os citando a lei e os profetas, lembrou-lhes os combates outrora sustentados e inflamou-os desse modo com um novo ardor.	9 By encouraging them with words from the law and the prophets, and by reminding them of the battles they had already won, he filled them with fresh enthusiasm.
10 Após haver-lhes reanimado o espírito, estimulou-os ainda, apresentando aos seus olhos a perfídia dos gentios e o desprezo da palavra dada.	10 Having stirred up their courage, he gave his orders and pointed out at the same time the perfidy of the Gentiles and their violation of oaths.
11 Assim armou a todos não com a segurança que vem das lanças e dos escudos, mas com a coragem que suscitam as boas palavras. Narrou-lhes ainda uma visão digna de fé uma espécie de visão que os cumulou de alegria.	11 When he had armed each of them, not so much with the safety of shield and spear as with the encouragement of noble words, he cheered them all by relating a dream, a kind of vision, worthy of belief.
12 Eis o que vira: Onias, que foi sumo sacerdote, homem nobre e bom, modesto em seu aspecto, de caráter ameno, distinto em sua linguagem e exercitado desde menino na prática de todas as virtudes, com as mãos levantadas, orava por todo o povo judeu.	12 What he saw was this: Onias, the former high priest, a good and virtuous man, modest in appearance, gentle in manners, distinguished in speech, and trained from childhood in every virtuous practice, was praying with outstretched arms for the whole Jewish community.
13 Em seguida havia aparecido do mesmo modo um homem com os cabelos todos brancos, de aparência muito venerável, e nimbado por uma admirável e magnífica majestade.	13 Then in the same way another man appeared, distinguished by his white hair and dignity, and with an air about him of extraordinary, majestic authority.
14 Então, tomando a palavra, disse-lhe Onias: Eis o amigo de seus irmãos, aquele que reza muito pelo povo e pela cidade santa, Jeremias, o profeta de Deus.	14 Onias then said of him, "This is God's prophet Jeremiah, who loves his brethren and fervently prays for his people and their holy city."
15 E Jeremias, estendendo a mão, entregou a Judas uma espada de ouro, e, ao dar-lha, disse:	15 Stretching out his right hand, Jeremiah presented a gold sword to Judas. As he gave it to him he said,
16 Toma esta santa espada que Deus te concede e com a qual esmagarás os inimigos.	16 "Accept this holy sword as a gift from God; with it you shall crush your adversaries."
17 Entusiasmados por estas palavras de Judas, tão nobres e tão capazes de excitar a coragem e robustecer as almas dos jovens, decidiram os judeus não acampar, mas arrojar-se para a frente, travar com valor a batalha e obter assim uma decisão, porque a cidade, a religião e o templo estavam em perigo.	17 Encouraged by Judas' noble words, which had power to instill valor and stir young hearts to courage, the Jews determined not to delay, but to charge gallantly and decide the issue by hand-to-hand combat with the utmost courage, since their city and its temple with the sacred vessels were in danger.
18 Não lhes causavam tanta preocupação as mulheres, as crianças, seus irmãos e seus parentes: a primeira e principal inquietação que tinham era a purificação do templo.	18 They were not so much concerned about their wives and children or their brothers and kinsmen; their first and foremost fear was for the consecrated sanctuary.
19 Não era menor a angústia dos que haviam ficado na cidade, ansiosos pela luta que ia ser travada fora, na planície.	19 Those who remained in the city suffered a like agony, anxious as they were about the battle in the open country.
20 Todos já aguardavam a batalha decisiva, prestes a se iniciar; os inimigos também já se tinham reunido para o combate, os elefantes estavam postados no lugar conveniente, a cavalaria disposta nas alas;	20 Everyone now awaited the decisive moment. The enemy were already drawing near with their troops drawn up in battle line, their elephants placed in strategic positions, and their cavalry stationed on the flanks.
21 Macabeu, à vista dessa multidão imensa, do aparato de armas tão diversas e do aspecto temível dos elefantes, estendeu as mãos para o céu e invocou o Senhor que opera prodígios. Sabia muito bem que não é o poderio das armas que obtém a vitória, senão que Deus a decide, outorgando-a aos que ele julga dignos dela.	21 Maccabeus, contemplating the hosts before him, their elaborate equipment, and the fierceness of their elephants, stretched out his hands toward heaven and called upon the LORD who works miracles; for he knew that it is not through arms but through the LORD'S decision that victory is won by those who deserve it.
22 Eis como foi sua oração: Senhor, vós, que no tempo de Ezequias, rei da Judéia, enviastes vosso anjo e fizestes perecer cento e oitenta e cinco mil homens do exército de Senaquerib,	22 He prayed to him thus: "You, O LORD, sent your angel in the days of King Hezekiah of Judea, and he slew a hundred and eighty-five thousand men of Sennacherib's army.
23 enviai, pois, ainda agora, ó soberano dos céus, um bom anjo que nos preceda, infundindo temor e espanto.	23 Sovereign of the heavens, send a good angel now to spread fear and dread before us.
24 Que vosso braço se estenda e extermine aqueles que, blasfemando, vieram atacar vosso povo santo. E com essas palavras terminou.	24 By the might of your arm may those be struck down who have blasphemously come against your holy people!" With this he ended his prayer.
25 De um lado, as tropas de Nicanor avançavam ao som das trombetas e dos hinos guerreiros;	25 Nicanor and his men advanced to the sound of trumpets and battle songs.
26 do outro lado, os de Judas travavam a batalha entre invocações e orações.	26 But Judas and his men met the army with supplication and prayers.
27 Enquanto pelejavam com as mãos, oravam ao Senhor no coração, e assim derribaram por terra nada menos que trinta e cinco mil homens; e sentiram-se cheios de alegria por ver Deus manifestar-se desse modo.	27 Fighting with their hands and praying to God with their hearts, they laid low at least thirty-five thousand, and rejoiced greatly over this manifestation of God's power.
28 Concluída a batalha, dispersaram-se felizes, quando reconheceram Nicanor prostrado com a sua armadura.	28 When the battle was over and they were joyfully departing, they discovered Nicanor lying there in all his armor;
29 Então, entre gritos e alvoroço, louvaram o Senhor na língua paterna.	29 so they raised tumultuous shouts in their native tongue in praise of the divine Sovereign.
30 Aquele que se consagrara de corpo e alma ao serviço de seus concidadãos, e conservara para com seus compatriotas o amor de sua juventude, ordenou que degolassem a cabeça de Nicanor, como também a mão e o braço, e os levassem a Jerusalém.	30 Then Judas, who was ever in body and soul the chief defender of his fellow citizens, and had maintained from youth his affection for his countrymen, ordered Nicanor's head and whole right arm to be cut off and taken to Jerusalem.
31 Chegado à cidade, convocou seus compatriotas, dispôs os sacerdotes diante do altar e mandou aproximarem-se também os que se achavam na cidadela.	31 When he arrived there, he assembled his countrymen, stationed the priests before the altar, and sent for those in the citadel.
32 Apresentou-lhes a cabeça do impuro Nicanor e a mão, que este maldito havia insolentemente estendido contra a morada do Todo-poderoso.	32 He showed them the vile Nicanor's head and the wretched blasphemer's arm that had been boastfully stretched out against the holy dwelling of the Almighty.
33 Depois mandou cortar a língua do ímpio para lançá-la em pedaços aos pássaros e mandou suspender	33 He cut out the tongue of the godless Nicanor, saying he would feed it piecemeal to the birds and would hang up the other wages of his folly opposite the temple.
34 E todos puseram-se a louvar nestes termos o Senhor, que se tinha manifestado: Bendito seja aquele que preservou sua morada de toda a impureza.	34 At this, everyone looked toward heaven and praised the Lord who manifests his divine power, saying, "Blessed be he who has kept his own Place undefiled!"
35 Judas suspendeu do mesmo modo a cabeça de Nicanor, na parte exterior da cidadela, como sinal palpável e evidente da proteção do Senhor.	35 Judas hung up Nicanor's head on the wall of the citadel, a clear and evident proof to all of the Lord's help.
36 De comum acordo, foi estabelecido que, doravante, não se deixaria passar esse dia sem festejá-lo, e que seria celebrada no dia treze do duodécimo mês, chamado Adar em língua siríaca, a vigília do dia de Mardoqueu.	36 By public vote it was unanimously decreed never to let this day pass unobserved, but to celebrate it on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, called Adar in Aramaic, the eve of Mordecai's Day.
37 Assim se desenrolaram os acontecimentos relativos a Nicanor, e já que a partir dessa época Jerusalém permaneceu em poder dos hebreus, finalizarei aqui minha narração.	37 Since Nicanor's doings ended in this way, with the city remaining in possession of the Hebrews from that time on, I will bring my own story to an end here too.
38 Se ela está felizmente concebida e ordenada, era este o meu desejo; se ela está imperfeita e medíocre, é que não pude fazer melhor.	38 If it is well written and to the point, that is what I wanted; if it is poorly done and mediocre, that is the best I could do.
39 Assim como é nocivo beber somente o vinho ou somente a água, mas agradável e verdadeiramente proveitoso beber a água e o vinho misturados, assim também a disposição agradável do relato é o que causa prazer aos ouvidos do leitor. Aqui, pois, termino.	39 Just as it is harmful to drink wine alone or water alone, whereas mixing wine with water makes a more pleasant drink that increases delight, so a skillfully composed story delights the ears of those who read the work. Let this, then, be the end.
