Livro de Neemias 1

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Palavras de Neemias, filho de Helquias. No mês de Casleu do vigésimo ano, encontrando-me eu em Susa, no palácio,	1 The words of Nehemiah son of Hacaliah. It happened in the month of Chislev, in the twentieth year,while I was in the citadel of Susa,
2 eis que chegaram de Judá, Hanani, um de meus irmãos, com alguns companheiros. Perguntei-lhes pelos judeus libertados que tinham escapado ao cativeiro e a respeito de Jerusalém.	2 that Hanani, one of my brothers, arrived with some men from Judah. I asked them about the Jews --those who had escaped and those who survived from the captivity -- and about Jerusalem.
3 Os que escaparam, disseram-me eles, os que voltaram do cativeiro, estão lá na província, numa grande miséria e numa situação humilhante; os muros de Jerusalém estão em ruínas e suas portas foram incendiadas.	3 They replied, 'The survivors remaining there in the province since the captivity are in a very bad anddemoralised condition: the wal s of Jerusalem are in ruins and its gates have been burnt down.'
4 Ouvindo tais palavras, sentei-me para chorar e fiquei vários dias desconsolado; jejuei e orei diante do Deus do céu,	4 On hearing this I sat down and wept; for some days I mourned, fasting and praying before the God ofheaven.
5 dizendo: Ah! Senhor, Deus do céu, Deus grande e terrível, vós que permaneceis fiel à vossa aliança e exerceis a misericórdia para com aqueles que vos amam e observam os vossos mandamentos,	5 I said, 'Yahweh, God of heaven -- the great and awe-inspiring God who keeps a covenant of faithfullove with those who love him and obey his commandments-
6 que vossos ouvidos estejam atentos e vossos olhos se abram para ouvirdes a prece que eu, vosso servo, estou fazendo na vossa presença, de noite e de dia, pelos filhos de Israel, vossos servos, confessando os pecados que nós, os israelitas, cometemos contra vós. Porque eu mesmo e a casa de meu pai temos pecado.	6 let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to listen to your servant's prayer, which I now offer to youday and night on behalf of your servants the Israelites. I admit the sins of the Israelites, which we havecommitted against you. Both I and my father's House have sinned;
7 Nós vos ofendemos gravemente e não observamos as leis, mandamentos e preceitos que destes a Moisés, vosso servo.	7 we have acted very wickedly towards you by not keeping the commandments, laws and rulings whichyou enjoined on your servant Moses.
8 Lembrai-vos da palavra que destes ao vosso servo Moisés, dizendo: se transgredirdes meus preceitos, eu vos dispersarei entre as nações;	8 Remember, I beg you, the promise which you solemnly made to your servant Moses, "If you areunfaithful, I shal scatter you among the peoples;
9 mas, se voltardes a mim, se observardes meus mandamentos e os praticardes, mesmo que estejais deportados às extremidades do céu, eu vos reunirei ali e vos farei retornar ao lugar que escolhi para estabelecer nele a morada de meu nome.	9 but if you come back to me and keep my commandments and practise them, even though those whohave been banished are at the very sky's end, I shal gather them from there and bring them back to the placewhich I have chosen as a dwel ing-place for my name."
10 Eles são vossos servos, esse mesmo povo que libertastes com o poder e a força de vossa mão.	10 Since they are your servants, your people, whom you have redeemed with your mighty power andstrong hand,
11 Ah! Senhor, prestai ouvidos à oração deste vosso servo e à oração dos vossos servos que veneram o vosso nome. Dignai-vos hoje dar bom êxito ao vosso servo, e fazei-o ganhar o favor do rei. Eu era então copeiro do rei.	11 O Lord, let your ear now be attentive to your servant's prayer and to the prayer of your servants whowant to revere your name. I beg you let your servant be successful today and win this man's compassion.' At thetime I was cupbearer to the king.
